I've had quite a few viewers ask about representing their favorite NHL/College team or country flag out at the rink next year, and I'd love to hang a flag out there for you! If you have flat ground and a kit like this, it's totally doable. My rink definitely has things that are more challenging for sure. But you don't have to have big light posts or some of the add ons. Most folks don't have an 8 foot hill to level, which was my big challenge. Anyhow, check out some of the forums online about backyard rinks and you'll see a wide variety of folks building rinks of all sizes. Cheers!

Gotcha. Growing up, my dad and I built a rink in the backyard using plywood and rebar. We still had to get a big white liner, but it was definitely a lot more budget friendly. I have some friends who built a very small rink in their yard that is 10 foot by 10 foot and they used 2x8 boards for the sides. They basically use it for puck handling practice since it is small, but it is still a great way to practice skills. Definitely lots of DIY options for those who want to save some money. Cheers

Really amazing! I'm an older guy from southwestern Ontario, Canada and this brings back so many memories of my dad building backyard rinks for my brothers and I. They were never as large or as nice as this but, the memories they built have lasted a lifetime. I know it will be the same for your family. Two more thoughts. My dad would have given anything for that plastic ground sheet! We didn't have them back then and it took quite a bit of work to build a base so the water wouldn't keep running away. And, I laughed when I saw your part about the spring puck discovery! Been there, but hadn't thought of it in a long time. Wish I was your neighbour. Thanks for this.

Amazing, nothing like playing hockey, or even just skating outside. I grew up in Canada and had local rivers and ponds that froze over every year with a Tim Horton's within walking distance. Winter break was a literal sun-up to sun-down hockey game. People came and went as they pleased and joined in. Everyone was welcome. Now I live in the deep south in the US, and I miss this more than anything.

Great question! I would say most fans out here either cheer for Minnesota, the Blackhawks, or Vegas Knights. -- Or wherever the person is originally from. I grew up near the Minnesota border in South Dakota, and so I have been a Minnesota sports fan for all sports. But I bet a lot of people will become Seattle fans for sure. Cheers!

Hey Travis! Minnesota Mild that is pretty good :) They have been pretty mild this year which is the truth! Avs were my team growing up back when foresberg, Roy, and sakik were in their prime! What a fantastic project. Growing up as a kid my father was in the Airforce and stationed in Glasgow Mt for 3 years. I have many fond memories after he and some neighbors got together and flooded our backyards for a skating/hockey rink. I have been searching through our family pictures to find some shots for scrapbooks. It was pretty rudimentary in shape and levelness, but we were kids and it was a blast. My mom would make hot chocolate for the tribe of kids that came and skated. Thanks so much for sharing this event and build. You made my day watching this. I just wish we would have had the technology back in the '50s and '60s. Felix

I am so jealous of your mid size rink and the 3 or 4 on hockey matches. The fact that you have loaner equipment is an incredible incentive for wannabes to join your group, make friends and improve their skills. I admire your passion and have but two suggestion; A Jet's banner and a King's banner. Skate hard, go top shelf or tweeners, and look for the open man, eh.

That is a really good backyard skating rink. You are very lucky to have the room to build a rink like that for your family and friends. You should have a tournament of three on three to raise money for a charity! That could get you some publicity and help out a good cause.

Hi! We put the water in December 7th and started skating about the 13th. Last year it was up until the third weekend in March. Got in a lot of skating! Thanks for watching and for commenting!

Hey Pete where in Montana are you I’d love to sate there if public during the winter I live in Chicago and play hockey. We come to big sky every winter to go skiing but we fly into Bozeman. Really nice rink and I hope to skate there sometime

We built a 60’x30’ DIY Rink. We bought two 100’x20’ rolls of 6 mil Poly from HD at about $80 each. Since we’d have a seam to seal in the middle, we looked around for the best tape. Viper tape was recommended, but it’s pretty expensive for the 60+ feet we required. Other tapes (e.g. Gorilla, others) are either VERY expensive and/or have POOR ADHESION to the Poly. We tried and had very good success (Great adhesion, waterproof - no leaks) with 3-3/4 in. x 90 ft. ZIP System Tape (Flashing Tape) from HD. $25 Bucks for the roll. So if you’re gonna spare some cost and use Tarps or need to seal seams on Poly, I highly recommend this tape - it’ll get the job done and won’t break the bank.

That's awesome! I built a small rink only 42x25 putting together 2 mini rinks from Arctic ice rink. It's too small but cool to skate a little and practice shooting. I want to build a bigger rink next year of I can afford it. I'm wondering if you would share the cost breakdownn on the liner, boards and walls etc
