Hey DIY PETE! Love this build...one helpful hint. Drill the holes on the top of the flood pipe. This will allow the flood pipe to fill evenly before coming out onto the spreading towel. This will give you even and consistent water coverage from end to end.

I'm wondering if it would make more sense to have had a separate trailer for the water tank. Then no counterweights. But I'm from Atlanta so what do I know from hockey eh?
@DIYPETE

Hey William! I wanted to utilize the tractor I was gifted with, and chose to go that route and have everything on one unit. Growing up, I didn't have access to a rink. Luckily for me, an older fella in town rented out a pavilion at the local park in order to build a rink there every single winter, and that's where I learned to skate. Fast forward to now, some of my fondest memories were made on the ODR. I'll be forever thankful to that man for his generosity and love for the game.

Pete Sveen I own a landscaping business so I’m always modifying stuff to be better. I’ve done leaf vacuum mounts for a dump trailer, made a snowblower rack that slides on to the salt spreaders on my plow trucks so we can have a snowblower with us when the trucks have a spreader in them. I’ve done made lawn thatchers/ leaf plows for the front of the lawn mowers, and made a skid steer quick attach style mount for a snowplow for my backhoe. To name a few. I’ve always loved welding and being able to make stuff that you can’t buy or make it better. I actually just did some fab work on one of my snowplows, it’s a few posts back on my Facebook page just search this name and feel free to check it out. I just watched your build of the rink also. This is awesome!!! My buddy had his backyard leveled out perfectly so he could make a homemade ice rink. He used long industrial roles of rubber and high strength plastic for the walls. He layed down piping under the rubber and some how had it so it would keep the ice cold! we used rubber squeegees with warm towela tied to the rubber as a Zamboni and for that application it was the best!! Became an instant hit of the neighborhood! But then he sold the house and is working on something better for the new place.

You should have used a “ garden tractor” from a similar era. They can be found for similarly inexpensive but were built extremely heavy duty with automotive style rear ends and heavy steel frames. Cool build none the less. For anyone looking for a garden tractor they can be easily differentiated from riding mowers by the 12” rear wheels that bolt up with 5 lugs like a cars wheel. Bolens HT is one of many examples of this kind of machine.

Why not put a 50 gallon barrel of water on the front of the tractor? The bricks on the front don't seem like a good use of materials.

Why you add wheight in front? Some support on back or water tank(s) in sides would be my choice.

Yes, definitely a great idea! I didn't think of everything on this build, will have to do a version 2 :) Cheers!

hi pete a little trick with your counterweight on the front remove the cinder blocks put another water tank in the box with a 12v pump and run the hose to the rear tank so when you get low on water you can top up with front tank also the benefit is the zamboni isn't front heavy when the rear tank is empty win win in my books cheers from down under

Hi! Rink is 60x120. To get a good coverage I actually fill it up once more. Going to be making some changes for version 2, but it's been a fun machine!

Great vid. Question: How do you smooth the ice when you get any little bumps?
@DIYPETE
@DIYPETE 4 года назад
Bumps generally get skated off pretty quickly. But for bumps, I sometimes will take a weed burner ( connected to a propane tank ) -- basically a big torch that quickly will melt bumps.
@kaygeebee

For small jagged bumps caused by melted snow or ice chunks, I just use a ice scraper blade about 10” wide. Get a heavy plate one with a chiseled edge. Works really well.

I have a good idea to further enhance and upgrade the rink. Install some taller boards all around the rink. Like the ones used in the NHL. They're about 3ft - 4ft tall and it'll make it look eye-catching. Anyways... It'll be cool if that can happen come the next winter season (2021 - 22). Oh and if you still have any flag posts left, I'd like to send you a NY Rangers team flag to add to the flag collection you already have. Just tell me how. Till then, keep up the good work and I really enjoy watching your content on YT. ✌🏻

zamboni's don't employ chains, sort of looks like it defeats the purpose...

DUDE YOU ARE THE MAN!!! SO COOL. We live in potomac Montana and have a backyard pond. I use a big fire hose and water pump to kinda resurface. this gives me hope! If your ever over playing missoula reach out! Thanks for sharing the knowledge!!! Nick Salter

Hey Nick! I hope all is well over in Potomac. That is awesome you have a backyard pond! I've helped some buddies flood their ponds using the trash pumps and fire hose and those sure pump out a lot of water quickly! I'll reach out if I'm in the area, and you do the same! I usually head over to Missoula for a hockey tournament in May. Cheers and keep up the good work with your rink!
