Bad Anime Adaptations 

Can we just talk for a second about Ibi's music choice and the tone and production of this?? I can feel the care and time that Ibi is dedicating to these videos, it's crazy to me that you haven't blown up yet

given the considerable success of the fire force anime, i can very easily see soul eater get a remake once it's done since the two franchises are interlinked.

I meant to make a note saying that 2003 is actually really really good on it's own even if it's later half is not representative of the manga. the earlier parts are even better than brotherhood IMO. Still tho brotherhood is much more popular as an adaptation since it's more accurate. Same w the Soul eater anime. Shoulda made that more clear my b.

For me, the most disappointing bad adaptation has gotta be berserk. Guts still to this day pushes me to keep struggling no matter how much bs be happening in my life. Cant say much about any other series, but I can still understand. Thanks for another great video dude, you're so close to 10k. Having fma 2003 compared to promised neverland season 2 hurts to hear. It is criminally underrated, has so many interesting ideas, fantastic character development, humanized and relatable villains, themes that are so much mote thought provoking than anything brotherhood did. I wish more people would give it a real chance instead of shitting on it because it's "not canon".

I think one of the best custom adaptations is FMA 2003 it's just a different show from Brotherhood that takes place in the same world with a sort of same story I love FMA 03 way more then I love Brotherhood

I don't think you could've picked a worse example than FMA 2003. (6:56): "If people like your source material, stick to your ******* source material. There is no good reason to just take creative control." Except that FMA 2003 was intended by series creator Hiromu Arakawa and studio Bones to go in its own direction, since the manga wasn't finished. With Hiromu Arakawa still busy writing the manga at the time, someone else had to take creative control of the project. That's a good reason. (8:18): "If it wasn't for Brotherhood, I doubt the franchise would be held in nearly the same regard." FMA 2003 was actually one of the most popular and highest rated anime when it came out. It was one of the biggest contributors to anime breaking out into the mainstream in the west. You could just as easily say that Brotherhood would never have reached the level of popularity it has if it wasn't for FMA 2003 paving the way for anime in the west. (8:52): "But the thought that so many people have lost the desire to ever engage with some of my favourite pieces of media, will never care about stories I cherish, all 'cause some ********* didn't understand how to properly translate its appeal; that genuinely breaks my heart." It's already inappropriate to insult someone just because they might have done a poor job, but in the case of FMA 2003 the creator herself approved of the changes made to her story. It's also easy to flip this argument on its head: "The thought that so many people have lost the desire to ever engage with FMA 2003, will never care about it, all because of Brotherhood; that genuinely breaks my heart."

to be honest soul eater isn’t a bad adaptation it’s very good it’s just a shame it didn’t get the true fleshing out it deserved, the anime ending is underwhelming yeah but the journey towards it is definitely worth it. if anything soul eater should get the brother hood treatment, there’s so much more to unpack with the series and it would grow the fan base as a whole, anyway here’s to hoping

Fma 2003 is not an adaptation.. it's it's own original story with very different themes and characters as well as plots.

Neat video! The only con I have with it was you using FMA 2003 as an example. As the anime original ending was the manga author’s idea as they didn’t wanna deal with stuff like filler arcs. And I’ve heard it’s still pretty well liked by the fandom.

Great vid! I hate bad adaptations and when I hear that a show isn’t very faithful to the source I usually steer clear which is a bummer especially when it’s a show that is half true to source and the other half isn’t.

Changing anime but making up their own ending happened all the time in in the 2000s. In a lot cases I think it due running out of content or not having enough episodes to complete adapt another arc.

I think Berserk is up there, it hurts that it was returned to later just to do that CGI monstrosity. Was just thinking that if Urusei Yasura could come back after so long, if the rights and all that are ever figured out maybe we can get a dope re-do of Berserk, maybe even cap it off in some dope respectful way. The Promised Neverland is near perfect anime adaptation. And i'm ok with the fact that the second season never came out.

Part 6 crumbles your point about jojo imo, many factors caused it to be a mediocre at best adaptation batch releases aside and while jojo is a great adaptation generally there are still wonderfully adapted parts that i enjoyed reading the manga more

A certain magical index’s anime adaptation makes me cry inside. The light novel is absolute peak but the anime absolutely killed the series’s reputation.

as someone who has never read the soul eater manga, i actually enjoyed the anime. a lot. the same way i actually enjoyed FMA (i, of course, LOVE brotherhood as well), and still felt the resonation of the series. honestly... i adore both of those mentioned series, but my all time favorite series-- bleach-- honestly has an awful anime adaptation in comparison to the manga more than almost any of the others i personally have seen. i adore your content, make my boyfriend watch it, and am glad to see you upload. it's interesting to hear what people think about all of it between their preferred adaptations.

Im still holding out hope we get a good berserk anime eventually.

One thing everyone always misses with 2003 is that in the manga extras they discussed that 2003 was always gonna be diff. As a diff adaptation fma. Arakawa and bones both had ideas for fma and so they agreed. Tho bones ideas was mid. But that’s one thing to consider I love fma tho

I love knowing that all my favourite manga either have no adaptation at all or their adaptations are terrible or fell off. Claymore, cut itself early. Twin Star, 90% filler (this isn't a joke). Berserk, okay it has 1997 but IT'S ALWAYS GOLDEN AGE. One-Punch Man Season 2 fell off. I HATE IT HERE.

toriko is a manga that i absolutely love. it features awesome art, dope brutal fights, incredible world building and some of the most creative and unique concepts i've ever come across. the anime however sucks. the animation is ugly, there are major story rewrites for no reason, lots of filler, it doesn't cover the entire manga, all the characters talk at 200mph and worst of all: the super cool brutal fights are so heavily censored that they're barely even exciting anymore! WHY!? i just want to see buff guys rip each other to shreds with explosive bugs while discussing food!

One always hopes for a brotherhood remake...and then we get shit like the shaman king remake, with ludicrous fast pace in the first cour, and still fast but not turbo pace for the rest, barely any animation, two OP SO FULL OF EVERY SPOILER KNOW TO MANKIND, and overall just sad

Worst adaptation I've seen? Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle. It was licensed to a kids' TV channel, so at first they just censored stuff like blood and alcohol. Then the manga's plot took a hard turn into topics fundamentally inappropriate for children, so they chose the FMA 2003 route. Only, instead of a non-canon great alternative exploration of the FMA world and plot, TRC lost all of its soul, and the new dumbed down episodes contradicted some core themes of the manga. It was heartbreaking to see that happen to a story I loved so much.

I'm surprised you never mentioned the Dragonball movie. It's literally the definition of a bad adaptation. It's my game of thrones season 8 or promised Neverland season 2. Soul crushing. Immediately when I saw the cast announcement for it I knew it was going to be a flop.

Even though the way Soul Eater ended was crap it is still an enjoyable 'bad' adaptation as a whole (also it was fkn ahead of its time it realy was). I would never really put it on the same level of dogshit as Tokyo Ghoul or Promised Neverland.

tokyo ghoul needs a new adaptation, i'm not a big fan of it as much as i am before, but it pains me when anime only said tokyo ghoul is "bad" just because they don't give it a chance to read the manga

Blood Blockade Battlefront/Kekkai Sense had an Anime Original first season that was actually Great.

FMA 2003 is so nostalgic for me. Tone was on point, and the OPs and EDs were just as good, if not better than Brotherhood’s. I think its definitely one of the better anime original adaptations.

I personally think 7DS needs a new remake. Not solely because of the animation but because of how hard the story was to follow, season 1 transitioning to season 2 and then to season 3 was a prime example of this. You could also find plot points along the story like with "the roars of dawn" where they are seen in the celebration when they died earlier. Now this isn't the anime fault but i wish they had expanded on character more than what they did. Edit : I love 7DS and it's in my top 10

Nah but FMA 2003 can be excused though, because as they were trying to avoid using filler as they were catching up to the anime so it they went up to the author and asked if they could make their own plot and continue. She said sure and they went ahead and made a fresh plot (that was bad) while the manga went ahead and finished. Then they made brotherhood to be faithful to the manga.

What about Tokyo Ghoul Re: They just rushed through the manga and skipped a lot of arcs. Plus they kinda made s**t up by having Matsuri be the one to trigger Kaneki turning into the Dragon Centipede by trying to kill his pregnant wife. Say what you want about Mappa. But at least their adaptations of Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Hell’s Paradise and Attack on Titan respected the source material.

Ah yes, bad adaptations. First time I ever experienced this pain is when I watched D Gray Man. And oh God it was a trainwreck. It's not that popular nowadays so I don't think it will even get new adaptation or even continuation. Hope I am wrong tho. Gonna huff that copium. Great vid as always. Good luck on Finals :)

I heard many times that after season 1 tokyo ghoul went downhill and i thought it was just writting. The i heard they changed the manga. I thiught they skipped some things. Later i watched s1 and it was GOLD then i watched season 2...it surely was worse than s1, some things didnt make sense but i though it was kinda overhated...and then read the manga to see what changed. OH BOY AFTER READING IT I GOT STAGE 4 DEPRESSION I DIDNT EVEN KNOW THERE WHERE STAGES FOR DEPRESSION BEFORE THAT MAYBE I FUCKNG CREATED THEM BCUZ I WANTED TO FCKING KMS i decided to readt tokyo ghoul :re first and then watch the disaster later. Im also planning on watching promised neverland s1, read the manga, and see the disaster later

Sadly enough in the case of promised neverland from the research I've done a lotta good manga material got skipped completely to time save. Unfortunate given how a lot of people seem to not enjoy the manga's ending. Least to say speeding it up and distilling to a sideshow where you don't even know what in the hell is going on does not resolve it.

Black Cat got a terrible anime adaptation that barely follows the manga but I still like it despite how much worse and different it is from the manga. Would love to see a reboot tho.

'Brotherhood treatment' is not a good thing, and never will be. 'True vision' lol accept there are two. 03 is not tryna be the munga! also there was nothing TO rectify as the 03 anime was planned from the start with several details such as Sloth and roles such as Lust being re-structured, as far back as the first episode you get so many differences it's not even funny. And by the way: Fullmetal 03 was loved long before Brotherhood. So that's yet more and more misinformation. Do not speak as an authority on things you know nothing about. Brotherhood existing does not change that 03 would be well liked. What you say is speculation at best.

The way you feel about fma the original is how I feel about erased because erased is one of the better anime ive watched and its my favorite but the ending absolutely sucks and it funny because the Netflix adaptation and the manga have the correct and better ending but the anime adaptation doesn't. HOW! the source is right there
