Bad-Ass Buick: 1955 Special - /BIG MUSCLE

Owner:
• Harry Fisher
In stock form, the 1955 Buick Special could best be described as a "nice" car. It's not drop dead gorgeous like a 1959 Impala, nor does it have the panache of say a 1956 Chrysler 300. You see the '55 Buick Special was a working mans car. It had room enough for the whole family, a decent power-plant thanks to its 264 cubic inch V8, and style that was, well... above average. Harry Fisher or "Uncle Harry" as most people know him, saw the old Buick a bit differently though. He knew that with a few little touches (like a 502 cubic inch big-block, modern suspension, and a new set of wheels) that this old Buick had the potential to become one of the baddest hot-rods around.

Darrren Betker Well, that is, unless you don't happen to know what the hell you are doing! At 17 years old, in 1985, I bought a 71 Torino GT. Its original 351c was gone, replaced by a 302. It quickly needed a new starter, so I took it to a repair shop and they told me the flex plate had a few missing teeth, which was why starters only lasted a few weeks at best. It kept grinding gear teeth off of the starter. I absolutely did NOT have the money to have that fixed. So I decided to do some stuff myself, while waiting to get the $$ together(while making $5 an hour at a machine shop that produced high stall torque converters, and still in high school). For some reason that I don't recall, I decided to learn how to do engine rebuilding, by removing its cylinder heads and replacing the gaskets, in our apartment parking lot. I had never even seen someone do this, and didn't even have proper tools. I got the heads off, then learned that I should have NEVER attempted to remove them in the first place! Now I couldn't get the flex plate replaced, OR replace the cylinder heads! Long story short, I basically gave the Torino away. It not only takes money to fix up a car, it also requires you spend quite a bit of money on proper tools, AND that you actually have a practical place to do the job. Not to mention the skill and knowledge. MOST people do not qualify under those circumstances, to build their own cars. I know a helluva lot more now about cars than I did in 1985. I do most repairs myself. But I am still not in the position to build a car. The extra money and the facilities are still not available to me.

I bought one of these with a stick shift in 1963. Lots of fun winding up that little nailhead. As I recall that was one of the Buicks with an extra heater coil under the driver's side of the bench seat. No worries about wintertime cold toes. Always made me nervous when I put one of those Buicks of that era up on a hoist and saw heater hoses underneath the car where they were subjected to all manner of insults by sticks and stones and etc. One good bang, you get a leak, and lose all of your coolant. Lots of ways to make a really nice car out of one of these, which he did. And, yes, I remember how much I enjoyed watching Broderick Crawford and the Highway Patrol show with my Dad.

The first car I remember and the car my Dad owned when I was born was a '55 Buick Special. Two tone paint and one of the coolest front bumpers ever. I remember driving on the same roads in the video. Very cool that Mike spent 10 hours toolin around the Delta. Those levee roads are some of the best driving and motorcycle riding there is. The only thing better is flying down the river in a big muscle boat. No stop lights, no speed limits, and the girls are half-naked when they get in.

If you're going to host a car show, you ought to know what you're talking about! First, the Special was available as a two door post sedan, yes...but also as a two door hardtop (no post), four door post or hardtop, station wagon, and convertible. Secondly, the model line up was Special, Century, Super, Roadmaster. You forgot the Super, which was the most popular 55 Buick of all! C'mon Dude!
@eurocarman
@eurocarman 6 лет назад
And you also don't really have it right either, best selling 55 Buick was the Special series model 46R Two Door Riviera (hardtop) which sold 155,818 units.The Super series model 56R Two door Riviera (hardtop) 85,656 units Buick produced over 738,000 vehicles in 1955 their best year ever until 1973 when they produced just over 821,000

A few words for you, Dan. I love that 1) you're on a show about muscle cars trying to hype up electric, 2) you have zero supporting evidence or citation behind your facts, 3) you keep using "good and evil" as supporting facts, and 4) you consider yourself a genius even though you're calling people idiots, nitwits, and cursing at them. Harry's little speech on kids saying they weren't able to afford a hot rod is literally the story of my life. You can have a start with a little luck or a little money. I'm starting my hot rodding career with a hand-me down 1970 Chevelle.My grandpa bought the car and built it for my mom as a high school graduation present because that's the car she wanted. She drove it for 4 or 5 years before I was born. She brought me home from the hospital in that car and that is what started me on my hot rodding road. She stopped driving it because of gas and a few other problems so she got other cars but still kept it. She never planned on selling it even though she was offered almost 50k for it. It was a sentimental thing. 2008 was the last time it was driven and retired to the driveway. Fast forward to 2012-2013 I had some money and was getting to the age to where I was about to start driving. We got the motor running again after 5 years of dormancy. I spent all the money I saved up to buy a set of tires just to get it rolling even though it wouldn't be road legal for another year.Then the tags and registration came. I was handed the keys as soon as I got my license last year when I turned 16. I didn't even have a job but I spent the little money I made working at a family members house just to put gas in the tank. Then I got a more legit job working at a trap club and that's when I started doing mods and fixing things. Then came my first job and then I started getting the money to do the little things and it just keeps on going from there. It takes time but when things start rolling with a project it gets done. Us young kids that are just getting these old cars to fix up are keeping the hobby alive. It dont have to be a tri five chevy or some muscle car or a Mustang, it could be a Chevy Vega, an old wagon, an old truck or just something handed down. That's what hot rodding is about. The passion and the hobby
@superharuhifan

+Bronywithguns870 I'm in the same boat there, I have a hand-me down 1964 Holden EH with the 179 H.P motor as my first car and it's fantastic pretty much all the money I make goes straight into that car. We're at a point now where all the guys in this scene are getting old and selling off their machines, most people our age getting the cars from the people before us will probably end up wrapping them around a pole but some of us have the inherited passion and know-how to keep these cars running and to treat them as they deserve to be treated, we have to carry on this hobby and the history along with it.

i love the owner. all my friends say they want to have a classic car but cant do mechanical work. I always say just buy one and you will figure it out. the past 3 years i learned how to weld, refurbish a engine, tune a engine, and do body work. the hole fun part is to make the car yours with little stuff. i would really like a galaxy to bad in europe they cost a fortune. so il just keep my volvo amazon

Very cool. Wish Buick could still pull off this kind of style.

Great video.. I'm from Northern California originally.. This "55" Buick takes me back to when I was a kid in Sonoma County, riding in my dads "55" Chevy Station Wagon or my grandpa's "1950" Dodge Coronet.. Thanks... What a totally bitchen Buick... Cant wait to get my "63" Pontiac Catilina restored....
