That gulping swallow made me cringe, because I remember being there. I had swollen lymphnodes, tonsils, adenoids, and uvula. I actually woke up from a dead sleep because I could not breath and asked my mom to look in my throat thinking it was strep when I say she had panic in her eyes and voice even though she tried not to show it. I had went from perfectly fine when I went to bed to my airway almost being closed off and being closed if I laid down. I went to the Dr the next day and had to get an actual needle blood drawing to get tested. Tested positive for mono. I couldn't lay flat for a few months or it closed off my air way completely. It was a vicious cycle. Your told to rest, yet your so uncomfortable its hard to sleep. Then lack of enough sleep just makes it worse. I had to gulp to swallow. I couldn't think, speak in complete scentences, remember words, I couldn't communicate complete complex thoughts with out forgetting what I was talking about or walk a straight line. I will say that's the quietest my mind has ever been usually I am thinking or calculating things constantly in my head sort of in the background, but it was empty then. I think that was the scariest part because I felt like I was mentally stuck in the mud. I couldn't get down solid foods at all for about a month and it took me hours a day to get in the liquids I needed to. Once I was able to start eating solids again it would take me over an hour to get down small bites of a loaded potato from Arby's (back when they had them) and often I would just get to the point that I was to tired to finish it. I was never hospitalized since I didn't get dehydrated or have other complications. After the outwardly noticable throat swelling ect went down. I had horrible pain in my joints especially my neck and knees. After a year if I had stressors like working a full shift or getting around chemicals(such as a floor being buffed or waxed) or allergies or getting sick I would feel pain as if my joints were bleeding. I went to the doctor about 3 months after I was released from weekly checks and my Dr said the pain I was feeling was all in my head. A year after I had a few years where I had terrible insomnia as if I slept so much I couldn't for awhile. Yet I needed the sleep so I wouldn't hurt. It has been 20 years since and if I stress myself I will feel the joint pain. It is always there but it can get much much worse the more stressed I am. If I get sick the lymphnode that really got big when I had mono will immediately enlarge and become painful. Depending on how sick it could be months or years before it goes back down. I have went to Dr's about it and general consensus is that it's in my head. I had one Dr who diagnosed chemical sensitivity and allergies causing migraines. He actually believe me about the joint pain and let me know that the more I stay away from my known stressors and learn to detect other stressors specific to me and eliminate them as much as possible from my life the better I will feel and the more I can tolerate day to day stressors that are normal activities for other people like working an 8 hour shift. I had been doing that for years, but having someone validate that and say it to me without me having to say it to them it felt like such a relief emotionally/mentally.

Dr. Thomas is a wonderful Doc. We need more docs like him.

I had mono also, to the point my tonsils were almost touching… I had strep so many times. They finally took my tonsils out a couple years ago, thank god. I haven’t been sick since than, other than Covid.

I've broken bones, had intense tooth aches, and chronic migraines but mono by far was the worst pain I've ever experienced by far.

I got mono my third week of college;; I had to go home. t involved my tonsils as well as my lymph nodes in much of the upper half of my body, and to make it more fun, my liver was involved. Worst sore throat imaginable. The fatigue, was unbelievable and I was very fit coming off working on a farm all summer: I was so tired I'd walk down the stairs and make sandwich and by the time it was plated , I was too tired to eat it or go back upstairs, so I 'd have to take a nap in the living room. I dropped all but one class (this was 1980, PC's and email were only for some scientists, academics, and government workers). After having mono, I've never felt the same again.

You are absolutely awesome 👏 when I was a baby my DOCTOR WAS A Doctor Paul as well. When I was baby 👶 I couldn’t eat anything I would throw up everything. Well he told my dad to get me out of the hospital that they were not helping me at all. Dad went and got me and Dr.Paul sat me on his lap for 24 hr. He then told my parents I was allergic to milk and to start me on goats 🐐 milk. Well after my parents stared me on the goats 🐐 milk 🥛 I was doing well and started gaining weight. I and my parents are convinced that he saved my life. Don’t see Doctors doing something like that nowadays. You remind me so much of him it’s scary 😧. ............☮️😘🌻

I had Mono n it is absolutely terrible, I was sick for 2 n a half months n I mean very sick, my throat hurt so bad I would cry in the middle of the night when the pain of swallowing would wake me up! U don't wanna have that sh** trust me!

Ugh!! I got mono as an adult. The kid I was babysitting had it and I didn't know. I was ill like missing work ill for 2 months and it took me about 9 months to feel any semblance of normal. Shortly after I was diagnosed with lupus and fibromyalgia. Now I have a 3rd autoimmune disease PBC 🥺

Mono nucleosis was TERRIBLE when I had it. Felt like I almost died lol

I got mono at 28, that sore throat was the WORST, and I slept almost 24/7. My tonsils stayed enlarged for quite awhile, and then I got tonsil stones for several years (not too badly). I was just wanting them to put me in a coma until I was over mono. It was horrible. She has my sympathy

Just a note: not all cases are as bad as those people are talking about in the comments. I once got a series of blood tests when I started seeing a new doctor and he said I had had mono at some point - I never even knew I had it. Not saying that anyone’s stories aren’t true, just that it isn’t always that bad.

I've had mono since Dec 24 and there's been no change Sore throat with tonsil stones,extreme fatigue,loss of taste and smell. Horrible thing to have

You might find this interesting Dr. Thomas (Dr. Paul) my son got Mono at 27 months old. His glands were so swollen in his neck he looked like the elephant man and his spleen was swollen too. Only twenty percent of Mono patients get swollen spleens. We had to be very careful he didn't get injured there so we had to keep him still. He was very lucky and got better within two weeks. The younger you are the quicker you get better that is if you don't get Leukemia. Mono is a close call with Leukemia. We were very lucky and that was in 1986 and my son is a healthy young man of 37.

I wish you were my doctor. I got a negative for strept. My symptoms are identical to hers and my doctor keeps refusing to do a blood test..... they keep saying it's probably just covid but... I've had 3 negative covid-19 tests and my symptoms are all the same as mono

I had mono when I was in my mid twenty. I was off work for 6 month. You lose weight and you want to sleep lots. You have to been wake up so you can eat and drink high protein. I lost 85 lbs. And I had to go to the doctor every week for blood work. it was hard because friends could not come and see me.

My kids have/had mono. My daughter was the worst. Hoping we don’t have a flare anytime soon.

one time in kinder-first grade i got diagnosed with bronchitis and some other disease where my tonsols were touching. i eventually got my tonsils removed via surgery, and have never gotten any serious sickness ever again! (fr tho, i used to get sick all the freaking time before i got my tonsils removed, now i rarely EVER get sick!)

I went to the doctor and I tested positive for strep throat and mine is a very mild case I feel no pain a little bit a pain in the back of my throat but not much

My friends daughter got mono when she was9or10and she looked just terrible-white as a ghost. She would sit in the car whilst her mom took her brother to nursery. Within a week she couldn't make it out to the car so stayed home and all she did was basicly sleep. She would get up and would walk from her bed to the table for breakfast after sleeping all night would take3bites and be so exhausted she had to be helped to the sofa where she would try to watch TV but would literally just pass out and sleep for2&1/2hrs.They ended up taking her food to the sofa and literally had to feed her as the cutlery was too heavy for her to lift. She would sleep even if her brother and sister were running around shouting she would barely wake up. it took her about8 weeks before she started to feel better and when she went back to school she would go in and do a class then home for the rest of the day and they had to build up her, school hours so as not to exhaust her. Even with school holidays it took her an awfully long time before she could actually do a full day t school and the work was sent home but she couldn't keep awake or have the strength to do it for a long time. They were even worried that she was developing narcolepsy as couldn't stay awake but it ended up being the Mono.

How come my dr never tested for mono? Just tested for strep it’s not strep so I’m just sol and bye!

Wow. I had almost the exact same looking throat. Scary. I went to a few doctors, some said it was NOT mono. Went to an ENT specialist and he found it WAS mono. I was sick for like a month. Terrible.
