Are you getting ready to replace either the inner or outer tie rod on your car or truck? Be prepared to head off some headaches, and replace them both as a set instead! In this video, Len points out some of the things that could go wrong if you want to replace just an inner or outer tie rod alone, and why it just might make sense to replace them both together at the same time! Tie rods keep your wheels connected to the steering rack, so this is definitely a job you don't want to do half way!

Unfortunately because of my ignorance I only replaced the outer tie rod. A few months after the alignment I found that my wheel/s wiggle causing my car to swerve and there's a lot of play in my steering wheel and I am now replacing the inner tie rod to solve this issue. Great video.

While you can mark where the tie rod was, and count the amount of rotations, the reason you would want to replace them in pairs is because you're going to want to get an alignment, and why pay for two separate alignments, because guess what? Your other tie rod end link probably isn't very far from needing replacement either

I actually loved this video and the individual! He was humorous and most important he hit the problems that you are most likely to experience with the job. I dislike videos that don’t show the potential issues and make it look like magic when it usually isn’t the case lol.

WARNING! Do not EVER heat a ball joint or tie rod end with a torch! My father almost died from it. The grease inside vaporizes and when the retaining ring fails, it blows up like a shotgun. It was red hot and went through his right eye and lodged in his head for 4 hours......burning until they were able to remove it.

In my experience personally, you need to change all your front end parts at the same time. Including tie rods inner and outer, ball joints upper and lower, hitting on an alarm if you have those.

you dont want to separate them if you are replacing both. you can put your new ones together next to the old ones getting the measurement exact....

Typically, if the outer is bad, the inner will be as well, and if it is not bad at this point in time, it will be bad in a short amount of time. So, save some time and go ahead and change both, the inner and outer while you are in there. It should also be a good idea to change both left and right assemblies for the same reasons you mentioned and I also added to. After all, your suspension really is the hardest working parts on the vehicle.

Agreed. Not only replacing outer and inner but doing so on both sides. With 260K miles on the original Toyota parts I bought OEM parts for another quarter million. Bought new boots, too. For $15 why not? And new sway bar links. The originals have been making intermittent noise on certain bumps for at least 10K. I'll take it apart once, fix it once, and get it aligned once.

So, what if the outer tie rod won’t come off the inner? Even with heat? (I loosened the jam nut) AND holding the inner tie rod with vice grips - on the hex area - strips it?

Just relace both parts, doesn't cost that much more, and guarantees you won't need to go through the whole process again when the other one needs replacing, plus no need to worry about damaging the joint getting it off !

Not only all the things you mentioned but you also need an alignment after. I know you said it but it was an after thought. An alignment requires you to take off work to take it some where and costa $70+ dollars to have done

You could use some rust remover gell and clean up the threads by the jam nut and then use a wire brush, then use some thread losoener spray, if after ll that you might use heat but using it initially is just laziness.

this is a bit of an extreme example , but if we were to change full sets all the time , we'd be shedding 1000's of euros every year , every 6 months . +1000's for the labour . No one will rebuild it's car , there is no point in burning 10-20k in a few years . Some parts have to be changed in pairs ok , but not everything .
