"If you're familiar with some of the fishing that goes on in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska, like swinging flies for salmon, you're likely already familiar with intruder-style patterns. Guys like Dec Hogan, Ed Ward and Jerry French originated these patterns back in the early 90's. It all goes back to the foundational concept of a fly like this - it's about adding volume, without adding any extra weight. You can certainly fish heavy flies on a trout spey setup. But it's a lot more fun to fish something that's light; something that you can really finesse and put in the zone.
I love tying this particular version of this fly. The colors represent the crawdads you can find in the North Platte River, the lower Colorado; really any watershed that has a good population of them. I love fishing the Bad Medicine near wood piles, or swinging it into old root balls that have washed up near the shore. If you can hang this fly in front of a downed tree, there's a good chance you'll find a fish that will REALLY commit to this pattern.
It all goes back to movement with a fly like this. Fish can feel just about as well as they can see. So if there's something nearby that's pushing water and creating turbulence, they're gonna key in on that. It's like if you're sitting outside your house while your neighbor is having a party - you might not see it, but you can feel the bass from the music pumping. Fish will feel the movement of this fly, sometimes even before they see it. The movement of the Bad Medicine is especially important in runoff and dirty water conditions, where you have to rely on what the trout can feel compared to what they can see." - Jack Reis
In this video, Fishpond's Director of Marketing Jack Reis takes us through the process of tying the Bad Medicine Intruder from start to finish. To make the most of this tutorial, use the timestamps below the fly recipe for navigating to the part of the tying process you'd like to see!
