This review was originally posted in August 2012, and has been re-edited for this re-post, which runs 48 seconds shorter, with small trims to tighten up the pacing and film clips. The on-camera footage of me has also been altered to boost their brightness and contrast, as they were not very well lit in the original. The song in the credits (Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads) has been replaced, obviously. This followed on from a review of The Dilemma, and began a season of Wesley Snipes reviews. I remember being quite pleased with how this episode came out, given it was out of my comfort zone for the show, and saw me tackling something more mature and dramatic than usually covered, with some difficult subject matter. I think this one stands up very well - hope you enjoy!
14:30 thanks for the warning. I live with my mum, step dad and brother. It would be a bit difficult to explain why they would hear that in the middle of the day.
@@WalkmanWillWalkAllOverYou I mean Wesley got to bang Ming-Na Wan, Anabella Scicorra, Natasha Kinski, and Jennifer Lopez in the mid 90s....he's a god among men
That twist had me dying laughing for literally like 10 minutes straight my ribs were hurting for hours never had such a big laugh out of a bullshit twist
Three thoughts. 1. When you warned about the volume I knew what was coming (hehe) having seen this when you first uploaded it, and having very noisy and amorous neighbors I was tempted to turn it up and aim it at my ceiling but refrained. 2. This is a weird Marvel pre-union. 3. Is it weird that even as a straight girl I am like, "Damn Wes what more do you want?" every time Ming-Na Wen is onscreen? Damn she is gorgeous.
Also find it funny how Robert Downy Jr after this would play the starring role in the film musical adaptation of The Singing Detective where he played the protagonist who at the start had REALLY bad psoriasis.
when he looked at her and saw Robert downy jr i thought it was foreshadowing that she had hiv, and that he was going to catch hiv from this one night stand. i gave this movie way to much credit. that was the worst ending i could have imagined.
This ''Bad Movie Beatdown'' has got to be my favorite series of your channel... Some of your BMB are so hilarious, I love your creative genius. Dude seriously underrated channel.
This really was a frustrating film. It has good performances and the AIDS scenes are well directed, but the main plot was so tone-deaf. It could've worked with some rewrites. Still, I get a kick off of how many Marvel actors are in it. And I get that Thomas Haden Church was supposed to be unlikable but even in the time period, his homophobia is just obviously too over-the-top.
This episode is definately one of my favourites. The analysis is solid and they're some good jokes (Callback to Bear! Yay!) In fact Snipes month in general holds up great
This is a gigantic Marvel bomb ready to go off! We’ve got Ming-Na, Wesley Snipes, and Robert Downey, Jr. in the most ridiculous film I’ve ever seen reviewed. XD
I love this channel! I swear, it's something about movies so bad I feel like shit watching but just can't look away from. This channel gives me that in 20 minutes instead of 2 hours. 👌🏼
Also another note, Snipes actually won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor for this film at the Venice Film Festival. And I thought the Cannes Grand Prix of 2016 going to 'It's Only the End of the World' was one of the biggest Film Festival prize-giving missteps.
this is one of my favorite episodes of bad movie beatdown, right up there with chuck and larry. the tonal dissonance of the cheating three lines are still laughably awkward and meaningless when put next to the robert downey jr. scenes, which belong in different, better film. they make everyone else's "problems" in the movie seem petty and stupid...which, if that was the point, the movie should have been focused on downey instead of snipes as the main character. not to mention that "you've got to be kidding me" eyeroll of a ~twist~ at the end. overall, it's just baffling and your commentary on it is spot-on.
@@troin3925 Say what you will about Going Overboard, but at least Shecky's Fourth Wall breaking was consistent within the film, instead of just at the beginning.
I suppose they thought it was an alternative to narration or text at the start. I suspect it might have been tacked on later if test audiences wanted some clarification at the start.
In the long-awaited troubled production, One Night Stand which Oscar nominated filmmaker Mike Figgis who said in his own words and felt afterwards in 2000, "I still don't quite know what happened with this troubled production". Nominated for an 1998 BSFC Award for Robert Downey Jr.'s performance. Also nominated for an 1998 Golden Satellite Award for Mike Figgis' original music score and Wesley Snipes won an Volpi Cup Award plus Mike Figgis also nominated an Golden Lion Award at the 1998 Venice Film Festival. Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures in November of 1997.
While 1993's "Mr. Jones" was an fast-paced romantic drama with Richard Gere and Lena Olin under the guidance of legendary producer Ray Stark with mixed results at its best and 1995's "Leaving Las Vegas" which won Nicolas Cage an 1996 Academy Award for best actor and both actress Elisabeth Shue and filmmaker Mike Figgis were received their only Oscar nominations to date, but for 1997's "One Night Stand," it was not one of the filmmaker's finest efforts.
You're kidding me right. This maybe - MAYBE could have worked if they cut out the entire AIDS thing and concentrated on the couples and how they deal with it. Oh no wait, doing something pretentious and preachy is much more important than portraying a realistic drama that the movie was promoting in the first place!!!! smh. :( So sorry you had to sit through this but thank you for sparing me. I might have shot the television I was watching it on.
OMG, the scene with the dog judging Wesley Snipes had me in stitches. It was so stupid, so goofy, so silly, I couldn't stop laughing, which pretty much defused any drama the scene was trying to generate.
Amazing that the guy who directed Leaving Las Vegas could direct such a hilarious moment, same goes for Spike Lee with that Dog scene in Summer of Sam. Can’t see how Figgis wrote such a sloppy and all over the place film right after LLV too.
@@rsfilmdiscussionchannel4168 the "Twist" would of worked more if, maybe Karen was heavier or had glasses and darker hair or if Karen cheated on Vernon with Charlie and she gave max aids , then have Vernon and mini exposed for messing around with each other ...that would of been a better "twist" ending
Surprisingly this isn't the only Wesley Snipes infidelity movie. There's another one directed by Spike Lee called Jungle Fever. I haven't seen that one but I'm assuming it's probably better than this.
I think the opening should have been Max narrating while he goes about his day, with his body language changing appropriately, smiling at the beginning and frowning as he gets to the uncomfortable parts of his narration.
Thank you very much for the warning about the sound. Much appreciated.

"Woof woof! I can smell over him, Mummy!" Also, why would there be a "Philadelphia 2"? There's absolutely no need for a follow-up to that film, considering there are other AIDS films out there now.
The movie would have been far better if it had connected that story element more to the main story. Max could have been having the affair in an attempt to deny his sexuality and he would then come to terms with his homosexuality/bisexuality as well as the affair itself. He'd take full responsibility for his actions, divorce his wife and start dating a man. Change the ending and emphasise the homosexuality aspect.
"Final S lettered action star"? What about the most famous of them all, Arnold Schwarzenegger? I'd also like to point out that Snipes didn't appear in The Expendables films until the third one and Seagal hasn't appeared in one yet.
Gage Peruti Arnold and Stallone are equally famous. And Seagal will never be in an expendabled film because everyone in that series hates him. And he knows Snipes wasn’t in the expendabled yet, did you watch the beginning of the episode
You know, its kind of difficult to take this guy seriously when he has an Ice Age 4 and a freaking Lorax poster on his wall! Two movies that were terrible, I might add.
The posters rotate and are often new releases at the time the video was made (as here). I've subsequently reviewed on Bad Movie Beatdown several movies that I had posters for in previous videos. I also gave a fairly negative review to Ice Age 4 at the time.
11:13 I have no clue why but that cracked me up lol by the way I saw who was playing Wesley's wife and I thought why would he cheated on her she's sexy....then I heard her "interpretation" of sexual moans lol
