Originally posted in June 2011, this is a re-edited version that runs 1m 18s shorter than the original. In addition to being upscaled to HD, and had noise reduction applied to reduce tape and camera noise, I've also considerably reduced the movie clips and tried to tighten up the pacing. This was the first episode of the infamous Seagal Month, where I reviewed five of his films and kept a running tally of his voice and body doubles. These reviews also included Mercenary for Justice, Shadow Man, Against the Dark, and Half Past Dead. And if you're wondering why I re-posted this out of nowhere, reasons will eventually become clear...

Film Brain I find it completely amusing that Seagal uses body doubles just for simple things like walking and running. That just let you know that he cares not about these movies. Anyways, more uploading your old videos, they're brilliant.

Fun fact! This movie was a BIG THING (at the time of it's release at least - 2004) here in Poland. It was a time when the master-sensei-king-of-the-world Steven Seagal was still considered an action movie star here. Also the polish actresses involved were praised for playing alongside a true superhero of an actor from the USA. I remember that when I watched this movie (and at the time I liked his earlier movies, the ones when he was half his size + I was 13) I almost fell asleep halfway through this garbage. Yeah, even as a kid that was hyped on action movies I didn't like this movie at all.

John Leguizamo certainly got a lot mileage out of his story of the time Seagal bullied then assaulted him for portraying a drag queen in "To Wong Foo Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar". But then again if that tub of goo was too lazy to even dub (...or WALK around in) his own movies then he should have had a heart attack when he shoved Lequizamo up against a wall as he claimed.

Seagal is easily one of our generation's great unintentional comedians. I'm glad he lacks any amount of self awareness or humility, he just wouldn't be as funny. I'm also starting to think that every direct to video movie Seagal makes is some kind of money laundering scheme. This movie had a budget of 8 million dollars with a box office return of 104 thousand dollars. Every movie he's been making for the past 15 or so years has had a multi million dollar budget but absolutely none of it shows up on screen as they are all terrible and quite sloppily made.

He just sits there and body doubles do the rest. He can't even get up to do the dialog in the studio. Why do they keep making movies with him, and who is watching them!? One of my pet peeves are these forced 'implied pedophilia' nitpicks so popular with movie critics across the board; they do their best to find anything that might remotely imply that the character is being creepy. This combination of triggered overreacting and PC culture just to find something to complain about to pad the runtime, and joking about pedophilia while pretending to be outraged by it is hypocritical and unpleasent and devalues genuine criticism. I hope this trend goes the way of the dodo for it's annoying and uncomfortable, the last thing I want when being entertained in a light-hearted way is meaningless references to pedophilia, when even just the word is enough to put me off my dinner due to the psychotic enragement any mention of the topic creates in me as it goes against every fibre of my being, let alone an extended rant about it where the meaning of perfectly innocuous comments are twisted to make them sound super-bad. To the Critics doing this: "Please STOP!"
@FilmBrain
@FilmBrain 5 лет назад
In this case, I would argue that there is a strong contextual basis as the plot of the movie is rather unusual, and the film generally has a rather creepy tone (again, not helped by the added voiceover dialogue). There's also the fact that Seagal has had numerous allegations made against him (even pre-Me Too), so its hard not to see him as somewhat sinister.
@MadScientist512
@MadScientist512 5 лет назад
@@FilmBrain Thank you for the background info, given that context I can appreciate how that gives it a rather sinister undertone and apologize if I came across as overly critical of you. I was speaking about the general trend of the unwarranted use of a disturbing concept for cheap laughs that I find offensive, but agree that you're entirely justified in calling it out in this instance, especially after having learned more about little Stevie's behaviour since in thanks to your pointing it out, it certainly adds another layer to the general filo-pastry of creepiness that is Mr. Segal. I love dark humour and believe the best comedy challenges a viewer's perception by breaking moral boundaries to reveal insights into the human condition and progress the Zeitgeist like George Carlin and Christopher Hitchens did, so I'm definitely not some PC SJW who can't take a joke, just someone who really dislikes unwarranted edginess that disturbs more than it entertains.
@MadScientist512
@MadScientist512 5 лет назад
@HerrNilssonTheMonkey No, the irony of myself using those words isn't lost on me, and I can laugh at myself as well as anyone else for creating unintentional meaning with misplaced words, but I wasn't talking of the true heartfelt overreacting I might've engaged in, rather about the feigned intellectual type of triggered over-reacting to create controversy where none exists purely for run-time/views/clicks/notoriety/etc.
@rsfilmdiscussionchannel4168
@rsfilmdiscussionchannel4168 4 года назад
@@FilmBrain I'm surprised you didn't play upon Seagal's sexual predatory nature more, given the nature of not just this film but the other films you covered (the T&A in Shadow Man is especially skeevy in light of the stuff he's done), though I remember one joke you made in this episode that referenced the lawsuit he received for dealing in human trafficking (!). It wouldn't be funny exactly, but it would have been worthy criticism for how the film's reflect him as a person. Though the weight criticism made more sense with the action scenes and the doubling, so I see why they were more noteworthy.
