Bad Movie Beatdown: The Ugly Truth (REVIEW) 

Originally posted in June 2010, this is a re-edited version that has been tightened slightly to shorten some of the film clips. This is still probably one of my favourite episodes, and showing how strong it was originally, the edits have only removed 38 seconds, compared to some episodes that have lost far more. Enjoy!

The Ugly Truth: Gerard Butler can't do an American accent

Hollywood has a really screwed up view of how men and women act. Hint: not like in this movie

He was talking about Bonobos being extremely close to humans (with sex), but he missed a huge point...they are matriarchal, the females are in charge!

The writers of 10 Things I Hate About You wrote this. That's just depressing.

Gerard Butler has one of the worst agents ever. Say what you will about 300, but how did he go from that to this?!

The male characters re sexist portrayals, by but the story rewards them and punishes the women. The nicest description for the writing would be defeatist.

I read somewhere that one critic said that this movie's portrayal of morning news is so unrealistic, it makes Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy look like a documentary. 😂

When I heard people complaining about this movie I assumed they were overreacting. Usually when I hear people calling something sexist against men they're usually overreacting. But I drew the line at this movie. Not to mention its unfunny as fuck.

This movie is disgusting and frustrating to watch.

This is the type of movie that people with a vindictive sense of romance like watch just so they can nod for 2 hours saying 'Mmm Hmm".

What happened to Romantic Comedies? How did we go from films like When Harry Met Sally and Four Weddings and a Funeral to this? Even if those movies aren't your cup of tea they're still better than this crap.

I would just like to point out Mike (?) threw in "depressed girls" when bitching bout the type of women he's dated. I'm sure he was a magnificent support for whoever those poor fools were.

This is without the shadow of a doubt the worst romantic comedy film ever made. With awful writing, a hateful performance from Gerard butler, and extremely messed-up views on men & women that makes you loathe both genders. Whether you are a man or woman, avoid this film and seek out better romantic comedies that don't disrespect your brainpower.

Contrived: 1.) Obviously planned and calculated, not spontaneous or natural, labored 2.) The Ugly Truth 3,) Rainbow falls

This movie does two things to me:It shows me how unenlightened Hollywood still is, and it makes me embarrassed to be a male.

This movie portrays relationships the same way as Family Guy, thinking that all men are sex-crazed and that all women are uptight and/or asexual. I'm pretty sure none of these writers have never seen an actual relationship play out before.

Ugh the 3rd act misunderstanding/betrayal.....one of the many things i liked about the force awakens was that they set up a moment of the misunderstanding/betrayal with finn telling rey hes a stormtrooper and when rey found out SHE....didnt care. She just told him the exact thing she said before he told her: "dont go"

So was this film a failed attempt at making a romcom that appealed to men? Because there is no possible way that women writers would make a script where a misogynist degrades his way into a woman's heart to appeal to women.

It's only occurring to me now just how many romcoms you used to review. Along with schlocky action films that was like, *your genre* for a little while there.

I don't always take hypocritical celebrities like Kathrine Heigl anyways.

Katherine Heigl is a fine example of why you should never let your family manage your movie career. Katherine allowed her mother to manage her career, which ended up getting her cast in one dumpster fire after another, including THIS movie.

I honestly feel so bad for Gerard Butler ‘cause I know that he’s a good actor, but he keeps getting cast in such shitty movies. I mean, dude, fire your agent already!

Katherine Heigl calls Knocked Up "sexist", aaaaaaand your career is done by then doing lots of crappy movies, as Rogen actually kepton being on notable comedy after notable comedy that he's written/produced. Yeah, you really needed to fire your agent. P.S., I actually liked Law Abiden Citizen mainly cause it was actually entertaining and over the top and it was definately never dull.

Ugh, my sister adores terrible rom coms like this. It's always a delight to listen to you reinforce my opinions lol. Also, Gerrard Butler sounds impossible douchey when he does an American accent.

I'd love to see this movie done right. Have Katherine Heigl's character be stiff and nervous instead of neurotic and have Gerard Butler's character be... classy. And full of good dating advice. I'm pretty sure this movie exists already, but TVTropes has failed me. Anybody got any names?

Oh my God. I know this is a re-upload but I haven't seen this before today. Wow this is a horrendous movie.

The sexism in "Knocked Up" comes less from blunt school of "women are less worthy than men" and more from the "all women want is responsibility and all men want is to have fun," so it actually is a rather unflattering look at both sexes, but the problem is: women are ALWAYS portrayed in those movies as absolute killjoys who only want to marry you so you can never see your friends or ever have fun again. I don't think it ruins the movie and doesn't stand out to me personally any more than their absolutely gutless refusal to even entertain the word "abortion." After all: you want it to play in the boonies where people are so overly sensitive. And because they won't have that talk, Heigl's character comes off as completely insane, willing to risk her career for a man she barely knows who ALSO doesn't want a baby!

Ugh! *UGH!* Why do people like this disgusting excuse for a movie?! I've seen people say this was a good movie!!! I've seen people make Non/Disney fanart of this film!!!! *UHG!!!!!!!*

All I can think about is fantasising about how I want to deck him one.

Why the shocked disbelief when the chef says his dish contains duck and not chicken? You'd think he said it contained rat. Lots of restaurants serve duck. Duck a l'orange and Peking duck are popular dishes. You can buy duck in the grocery store. Duck hunting is a popular sport. I'm absolutely at a loss to understand why this movie thinks there's anything wrong or unusual about eating duck. Did the writers just assume their audience was so ignorant that they'd never heard of anyone eating duck before? Weird.

This is depressing af but he sounds like a lot of messages I’ve read from guys on dating apps. Is that where they got this premise?

You forgot to play the final scene where Butler's character says Am I that good? Or are you faking it? to which Heigl's character responds with You'll never know

It should have been called "Neurotic White Moron Issues: The Movie".

The logic of this movie is also confusing as all hell. So the male lead tells his nephew to not listen to the type of “advice” he gives, but yet the movie ultimately takes his side? ????????

This movie has a 14% on Rotten Tomatoes. That is way too high for this abomination.

Movies like this are the reason why less and less people want to get married.

The Ugly Truth is that this movie sucks.

My mom saw this film. She had mostly terrible taste in movies, as did my two younger brothers, hence my judgmental, snobbish asshole attitude. Which is also hypocritical, considering the films I watch are likely to be similarly criticized, so as you can see, I am conflicted. Anyway, these types of films disgust me on so many levels.

Gerard Butler's character in this movie is what Denis Leary looks like to the people that hate him.

According to Linkara's first 15 Screw-ups, "naked weather girls in Canada" is an actual thing.

I feel like this would be a decent plot to a porn game (as some already have hints of these in them) but the man would need to be more assertive in his beliefs (Not right, just have more conviction) and lighten up on the mean spirited nature of it(the man is right and no one loves a woman for being themselves, and they wonder why divorce rates are so high if this is what they believe), the back and forth of the uptight woman and the sleazy/lustful guy, the fact the show gets more sexualized to pull in more views, it could work, just needs some tweaking.

Part of me wants him to tear apart the new Ghost Busters or the Diary of a Wimpy Kid trilogy

I remember seeing posters for "La Cruda Verdad" when I was in Argentina. I am SO GLAD I didn't let my post-300 opinion of Gerard Butler persuade me to go see the movie!

What in God's name made them think that this was a good idea?

Always loved this review. I'm a big fan of Gerard Butler but will admit he's made some terrible films.

This movie is for gender what Marci X is for race and what I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry is for Homosexuality.

Ok, this movie is depressing, but think about it. When you look closely, this movie's message is actually that women aren't supposed to be straight, naturally. I mean, if women seek romance and men are incapable of loving and caring and just pretend to, women have no reason to fall for men. They can't give them what they want at all! Therefore, no woman should be attracted to a man. That such a conservative movie can hold a message like this is very funny to me. xD

I can't believe that this film was written by THREE WOMEN! They should be ashamed of themselves for dumping this brutally offensive "comedy" on God's green Earth. They're disgusting human beings and they make me sick!

Mathew, on the off chance you read this, have you seen the rom com Man Up with Lake Bell and Simon Pegg? It definitely has some cliches, but as someone who normally hates romantic comedies, I loved it.

It's funny how here, he calls Law Abiding Citizen ****, yet if you read his text review of the film, it's more mixed than negative.

...I'm of that unfortunate rare breed of melenials on the internet who doesnt get offended by someone sneezing the wrong way, but this movie has done what nothing else has managed. It has offended me on a deep, deep level.

On a rewatch, one of Chadway's more obnoxious actions is snapping at that retail worker to get her attention, and then putting his sticky mitts on her person. He does that one without thinking
