Bad Movie Beatdown: Evan Almighty (REVIEW) 

Originally posted in March 2010, this is a re-edited version that removes about 44 seconds worth of footage. As usual, most of the cuts are to tighten up the pacing and make film clips shorter, although I've also boosted the audio of the film clips considerably. There's a couple of moments where my lines are slightly clipped at the end, and those were there when the review was originally made. I should also explain the "Lordhebe is God" joke: that's the username of my friend Chris, who used to co-edit and write on my Bad Movie Beatdown episodes. If you're wondering where I've been, I had food poisoning last week, so I had to take some time off. This movie is inccortly named. In the first movie, Bruce was given the powers of god (Hence the name) In this movie, Evan is given... a vision of a flood that comes to destroy the city... that's not "Almighty" that's.... a premonition... so the movie should be "Evan's vision of what is to come"

This just shows that no matter how good the cast is or how extravagant the effects are, the script is what matters.

*Trivia Fact:* In 2007, director Tom Shadyac had experienced a near-death bicycle accident that left him with severe post-concussion syndrome, after which he had some renewed faith and directed a documentary called _I Am._ Last I've heard of him, he has apparently retired from filmmaking and is now a film teacher at the University of Memphis.

One thing that really bothered the shit out of me, even in comparison to the rest of the movie, is that Evan literally predicted the exact moment the first rain in months would start, weeks in advance... And their response was to mock it for being a micro burst. Even with the Noah thing, wouldn't even most of the assholes ask how he did that?

Fun fact: There is an alternate ending where the dove takes one last shit on him.

I'm gonna keep this #ShortAndSweet; There was absolutely no damn point for anything in this movie... The animals would've been better off staying where they came from, like the polar bears, since the flood only affected the local area/region

My friend and I liked the first one so we went to see this. First time I ever remember forcing myself to laugh at a movie. Wanted to convince myself I was having fun...

I think what worked for the first Bruce Movie wasn't just Jim Carey but at the same time it was still an adult comedy. You take that and then down grade it into a family movie and you get....yeah. You get this.

To be fair: Jon Stewart has the best joke of the movie

I really enjoy your reviews. "Why is it always empty!?" had me rolling.

The only part I liked in this movie was the end credits dance scene. It was the only part that the cast actually got to do anything funny.

This is one of my favorite movies. Its terrible, has good actors giving terrible performances, has a religious theme despite messing up large parts of the noah story. aaahh much cringe too. how can you not love this movie!

2:59 "Have You Ever Seen The Rain?" is playing in the opening scene of this movie. A movie the main plot of which is preparing for the biblical flood's modern equivalent. *SUBTLE!!!!!* And what do we have at 5:43? The old 'Overworked dad is forced to miss x activity with his family' clichè. Wow.

Ugh. "Eve Adams" ... ugh.

Is the third one going to be with Ed Helms? I wonder what story they would go with next.

For someone who doesnt like doing sequels, Jim Carrey has one of the greatest sequels ever made "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls" btw, where the "Law Abiding Citizen" BMB?

Bruce Almighty is one of my favorite movies, and I loved this movie when I was 10. The only difference is, 10 years later, one of these movies is still amazing to me (take a lucky guess). This is the review I never knew I needed

My teacher showed this movie in literature class to add some visual to Noah's Ark. My instinct told me that this movie gotta be shit, guess I was right.

Technically the second flood isn't caused by God at all, it's caused by humans. God's just trying to save people endangered by other people. People forget that because of free will God CANNOT control humans, just try to influence them. I'm not saying this is a good movie, just that God is not really causing this flood.

I actually really liked this movie. With that said, I agree with some of your points, That damn dance isn't funny, and ret-conning his old personality bothered me from the start. Though I did find this review to be very nit-picky.

It wasnt a comedy... I felt sorry for Evan, that hes life was ruined by a crazy self righteous man, he was fired from his job and became worlwide known as crazy. I hoped for a happy ending but I was dessapointed. The worst part is that the villain was never punished! Bruce almighty was less bad but still bad.

I saw this movie thinking the animals really needed to travel to be safe. They only traveled about 4 miles . Gtfoh , why didn’t you just move all the animals to safety by feet. Had everyone else on the street and in their cars and a boat with water under it is just surfing through the streets . Wtf

The fundamental wrong logic with the movie was that they should have only shown animals that needed saving from the lake. There was no reason in bringing animals from Africa, australia. I mean you don't find lions and kangaroo roaming in the wild in any American forest. Seriously zebras, elephants??? Secondly, the dam, if it ever burst it'll most likely never burst from the top.

Remember how in Bruce Almighty the main protagonist tried answering everyone's prayers and made a mess? Why not try that concept with Evans prayer; show how the best prayers are sometimes those left unanswered?

1:40 Dumb and Dumberer was a prequel. Jim Carrey wasn't even gonna return for that anyway. That has nothing to do with his sequel reluctance.

I used to have this movie on DVD as a kid and loved it. I thought it was peak comedy, along with Furry Vengeance and Disney’s G-Force. Thankfully, my tastes have improved greatly since then. I refused to sit through most movies that were actually decent, yet loved garbage like this. And even stranger yet is that I grew up in a Christian family. Why did we watch a movie that made God look so bad? And was it made in support of Christianity or to make fun of Christianity?

I enjoyed Evan Almighty and Morgan Freeman's portrayal of the Almighty God. 17:40 - 17:52 funny punishment.

They should just make a bunch of MIchael Scott movies, id watch em. Plus you could do anything with the plot, Michael is fired from or quits Dunder Mifflin, and goes and finds a new job, or travels the country for some stupid reason, becomes a pirate whatever, any excuse to feature Michael Scott would work for me, provided the character was the same quality as the office.

Also, according to the Bible, the animals didn't show up 2 by 2. Only the unclean ones (elephants, snakes). The clean animals (goats, cows) showed up by 7s. It's so hilarious when christians don't even read the Bible.

Wow this movie is indeed terrible. I did not see Bruce Almighty either frankly (Jim Carrey humor is not my thing) but I can see how much worse this is. Btw Matthew, will you be doing new Bad Movie Beatdowns? I know you kinda transitioned to recent release movie critic full time now, but these I believe would bring you more views.

To be fair, Jon Stewart was the best part of the film for me.

If it was Deadpool instead of Evan, the humor would make more sense! His plans are kids drawings, he also draw his enemy with a dick hat on his head. That's super childish and hilarious X) Oh and the poop jokes mixed with Wade's wachy commentaries will be funny. The merc is a likable and iconic character, we know and love him. Evan is just... there and really unfunny. I don't care what happen to him plus his dance is ridiculous! I'm glad i never saw this movie, it looks awful! The message is hammered in your head instead od simply showed, the humor is horrible, the characters aren't likable, the villain is a joke and less cool than Ajax from Deadpool 1. This review is enough to satisfy me :)

Genre-Killer: After the huge box-office success of both this film's predecessor and The Passion of the Christ, many predicted a resurgence in the market for major films with strongly faith-based messages. This film's underwhelming performance quickly put an end to any such hopes, with faith-based films going dormant for several years before eventually re-emerging as much lower-budget and lower-profile efforts made by the likes of Pureflix.

Wait I think I’ve seen this movie 😅

If you watch the deleted scenes of Bruce Almighty you can see it's original concept was a christian faith film, more a Catholic faith film as it had a lot of their religious concepts and culture in it and Bruce himself had a completely different personality. It was re-shot and edited, which was the best thing to do, to instead make the movie non specific in it's faith. Plus in a lot of the original scenes Bruce was an "unlikable self absorbed arsehole to everyone most of the time", so they changed it so he's just a "likable selfish immature idiot who doesn't know how good he his life is" at the beginning instead. Which worked. Yeah some can say it's a very christian orientated film, but it doesn't go into specifics on denomination and you can point out that most of the time it's not even that as it can be for any Abrahamic religion. Evan Almighty, however, just seems to be that they just filmed the first draft of the script and didn't bother seeing if it was a good first draft. Yeah Bruce Almighty is a flawed film, but it is an enjoyable one as it just has fun with the concept. I couldn't stand to watch 20 minutes of Even Almighty as it was just horribly unfunny.

I loathe this movie

I feel like wanda's talent was squandered pretty badly, like every line she was given for this movie was "say something that a stereotypical black person would say" and it was weird I used to find this movie funny when I was five...but then it hit me, this movie is made for five year olds and evangelical Christians with five year old minds and senses of humor. Now I just shun it and say this is a terrible movie by any and all means

Movie sales alone, personally I thought Bruce Almighty sucked compared to Evan Almighty. I'd bet that it was Jim Carey's name that did alot of the 'selling" but as far as a plot, Even almighty was better written regarding events. I guess it just depends on who's your favorite actor. Then again, there's alot of people that hate on movies that mention God. Are you sure your bias is in check ? You made many overly simplified assumptions that aren't provable beyond your own ideology, which your entitled to, but not shared by many of us out here. I guess in the end it depends on what you consider a comedy. After all, one can see Brit humor a bit "off" and dry compared to say American humor, Russians are even more so.

Just want to say. As an actual Christian. I think the idea of a retelling of the story of Noah's Ark in modern times is STUPID! I remember seeing an ad for this film as a kid. And even back then. I thought it was DUMB!

Nice review, but I am a bit confused by one part of it. At 10:30 when you say that God is a prick, who are you talking to when you say "Not you"? Also, you said "as a character in this movie, not the Almighty one", but... isn't that movie the Almighty one, as well as the sequel to the other Almighty one? Anyway, the God in that movie seems to be quite a bit less of a prick then the God he was apparently loosely modeled after, that being the downright evil one in the Bible. Unless there's something else in the movie where God does something really sick like cursing all of humanity for wanting to learn right from wrong or flooding an entire planet rather than just one valley while making a gut who's unreasonably old build a boat just to save less than a dozen people, no plants and an unreasonably small selection of animals. Just saying.

If you took the time to read the Bible you would see that god gives humans free will so if he warns them of a flood and they ignore it its their fault not God’s. Like I’m not even religious and that makes perfect sense to me
