I just bought a pair of Dt 990 pro but the end is really harsh for me and also a set of consumer headphones ( Boat rockez 550 ) is also sounding good for me The only problem I have with the dt 990 pro is the hign end and I think that for that price the consumer and the dt have slight difference to my ear like the instrument separation is great on both headphones but dt has more high end and the consumer one is kinda casual type
Perfect answer. Learn your room no matter what speakers. Headphones are great for short periods but fatigue fast. Good monitors are useless in a bad room so learn the room and speakers
I have lousy room acoustics so I use my Sennheiser HD 599 open backs that are pretty flat. That said I pull them off once in a while when mixing and use the speakers to get a less accentuated feel for the stereo spread.
I'm too in the headphones gang. 😁 Because you can work room-independent AND you can always listen on a variety of speaker systems at friends rooms or cars or even your own collection of (rubbish) speakers.
This is coming at a really good moment for me. I’m working in a space right now that can’t be treated, so I’m looking for an excellent pair of open-back headphones. I know Audeze is a PLAP face, but if those aren’t in the budget, what would be the next best option? Say sub $800?
As I work mostly with speakers, and in a room dedicated as my personal/project studio, I'd choose the better speakers. I keep several decent headphones around for purposes of monitoring tracks while tracking mic'd parts, and also to reality check my mixes. My room isn't particularly "good", meaning minimal sound treatment; however, I know the environment rather well and I was able to tweak the settings on my speakers to compensate for the shortcomings.. I've no plans to replace my Tannoy Reveal 6Ds which I've had since the late '00s.. FYI, my finished recordings always get mastered and usually get their final mixes done at outside studios.
👍Warren is absolutely correct! Headphones are easier to start with to get a great reference for what you are doing, UNLESS you are lucky enough to be monitoring in a forgiving room, with appropriate speakers.
Very disappointing to see such a clickbait'ish title and even more disappointing is it thinking about how your opinion must be about the IQ of the majority of your viewers. :( What title comes next? "What is better? Something good or something bad?"
The title is the exact question I was asked by a viewer, those are the exact kinds of questions people ask me. Personally I like to answer them and give people the respect they deserve as opposed to talking down to them and sounding superior. It's very important to me to bring people into our industry rather than project some kind of elitism.
@@Producelikeapro I am sorry for my tone and I beg your pardon how I wrote it. You are doing a great job and im really thankful for so many really great videos and many information and your experience that has a huge value for many many people who are interested in the history and the craft of sound engineers, musicians and insides of the music business. "The BBC" of music engineering & education of youtube ;) I understand that this is business, that's how it works and that's completely ok because you always kept a great balance between telling and selling. I was just disappointed and shocked you might massively lowering your standards for some cheap dark pattern sellings tricks. Sorry again, it just hit me hard, because I really like your work 🌻 And thank you for you answer.
