I believe you are correct about the wires being loose was your problem with the remote and that you are correct about the gear teeth needing to be changed to help with your free spool. Definitely a few things need addressed including the melting plastic and the case cracking. I guess my thought is why not go back to harbor freight and exchange it when you initially had issues or contact customer support ?? Maybe they will view your video and make changes to better the product. If no one informs them and documents the issues how can they correct them?? Just calling it junk and tossing it aside doesn’t help. I will say that watching all of your videos and looking at the amount of use/ abuse you put it through actually speaks well for the winch. Most people would not use it so hard so often and you’ve more than paid for it with your business. That’s not saying it couldn’t be better, but for $5-600 it seems worth it.

@2:17 this is exactly why all winches have a duty cycle. You can't run them at 100%, and expect them to stay cool. They specifically instruct you to give them breaks and allow them to cool. Love your videos!

Exactly. I’ve watched a bunch of his videos where he pulls hard for a really long time without a break to cool down. If he thinks the Warn is gonna be any better, he’s mistaken.

Well i think the pro recovery guy knows more then all you keyboard Warriors saying what he is doing wrong the videos where he has long pulls nine times out of 10 he lessens the load on the winch because he doubles it over with the snatch block therefore making the need to cool down less. And he can tell us whether my statement is true or not but if you use the logic where if you do the same type of on Snatch blocks to lift something by human power it's going to take less power and you're going to be less out of breath right same principle.

Buddy you should definitely have good luck with your new Warn zeon winch!! I baught mine brand new way back in 1995 and I have only put a new cable on mine once because I let someone use it and they ended up flattening about a 2’ section of it!! Mine is the Warn 9500ti and everything I have hooked to it has been able to pull!! I’ve even pulled vehicles onto a trailer with no wheels and tires!!! Absolutely love mine and I definitely wouldn’t buy a different one at all!!

How many pulls did you get out of your Badlands? Are you going to take apart the Warn to show us how much better it was built? The parts diagram shows the same little driveshaft that powers the gears as in the Apex. Warn is nice, but I would rather spend the extra $1200 on gear for the Jeep.

Good autopsy video without sharing a biased opinion about the product. I agree with you on the primary use for Badlands winch being mainly a low use model. I'm sure only one close to "problem free" would be a Pierce winch for your use or upgraded Warn 8274. I definitely wouldn't recommend a Mile-Marker electric or hydraulic the hydraulic one would definitely not be happy with the Jeep power steering system.

For the price of the badlands winch vs a "comparable" name brand winch and the amount of use it has seen at or near its max rated pulling power I'm not too mad about that failure. Yes it sucks that it failed but the 3 failure points would be easily fixable by the manufacturer. The contact cover could be made from a higher temp plastic (or a metal housing with high temp plastic insert), the motor housing could be a little thicker or add a little more webbing, and as you said the paws on the ring need to be just 1/4" wider. Making those paws wider would be stronger as well as stop the issues you were having. Hopefully they see this video and respond or make the approatate changed to their gen 2 winches.

I went thru mine before I mounted it. I tightened everything down. I did have a looseish contact and did get a little turn on some confections. I belong to a county off road recovery group and have done only a handful of recoveries with this winch. So not comparable to a hard use recovery you are doing. I have had zero problems so far but at the cost I paid am not expecting anything out of it. So far I have only used it hard once on a Super Duty ford sunk in mud. I didn't double it up. I was lazy and just winched for a short pull and waited for it to cool off a little. I would go even more industrial than a WARN 10k. I would start looking much heavier. I watched you pull on a stuck semi truck. That is around 22,000 lbs. Surprised it didn't smoke a little on that. We do get what we pay for though...

The red W has never failed me but they too can be broken. The case failure on the HF winch is probably not from motor torque, it's from a hard pull where the drum is trying to leave the winch... Or the mount is deflecting some in hard pulls... Winches use the mount as part of their structure so if the bolts back out or the mount flexes, the winch housings can break...

Instead of cheap plastic, they should use old-fashioned bakalite, like is used on electric ovens . On the cracked motor housing, I believe the motor torqued over one too many times, and the case is to brittle. Don't know if the case is cast aluminum or stamped steel. Like your videos, it is very enlightening, and it seems you have a firm knowledge of physics and geometry , you make it seem easy!

I am completely worn out 6 Apex Badland winches of the six have been able to rebuild two of them as far as the housing breaking vibration ninety-nine percent of the time this is an easy fix on the underside of the screws place rubber o-ring on each screw also help keep screws from lost The free spool issue is usually caused by lack of maintenance grease gets built up behind the ring and causes it to push forward a 16th of an inch that causes it to lock and click ( in November of 2022 changes was made by making the stand off a 1/8 wider on the gear so that it is bigger than free spool indent ) at the same up date the plastic terminal cover was up date with fiber heat shield to protect plastic and prevent fire The wireless remote was because your wires was loose and it caused by lazy people at manufacturer. Ramsey winch and warn winches also have the same wireless remote issues so remember if it is intermittent on and off open case and Kemp the remote wires on the solenoid Don't buy rhino Chinese crap just tried there 1/2 synthetic rope With a rated brake strength 22,500 pounds and put on my rig and broke the line 3 times last night pulling out a Suzuki Sidekick in a small mud hole replaced with 100feet of 3/8 yankum rope only rated at 18800 break strength and single line pulled a ram 4500 service truck out of the same hole today with no trouble BUY AMERICAN NOT RHINA CHINA AND CHEEP AMAZON CHINESE CRAP AND HAVE A GREAT DA NOT A SHITTY ONE LOL

You should look at a ramsey rep8000 or other hydraulic winch. It would require a hydraulic pump posibly just some valving off your steering pump depending on what jeep runs now days and yes they are slower untill you consider you can run them non-stop 100% duty cycle most are comercial grade and they offer them in a long drum so you could pull 300' at a time with dyneema

Putting some hours on the warn I'd say for the money, that badlands did you well considering how much you use it. I suppose a warn is more servicable/rebuildable but for the money does it really matter? You can repair a warn and still have an old winch or chuck the old badlands and replace with a new one.....likely for less than repairing the warn. I also very highly doubt the badlands would have ever caught fire. Also, broken housings USUALLY happen from fasteners coming loose. I'm just thinking out loud here and thanks for the video!!!

And with the clicking you probably didn't have it disengaged all the way. This video is just another pissing match between you and yankum ropes and Harbor Freight

Absolutely did it on purpose because an equipment company did like our winch 🤦‍♂️ Do yall even think before you comment? 🤣

its odd but everyone thinks the apex should be better than a warn at 1/2 the price we get what we pay for. to be fair see take the warn apart and show the difference
@matt.mckinzie
@matt.mckinzie Год назад
I didn’t say apex should be better Apex said they are better then warn right on the box 📦 When I bought the bandlands it was because warn was backordered So I got the BL then I said I’ll run it till it breaks

I would be surprised if HF doesn't take your feedback to improve their winch design. By the way, during the time-lapse the jet flying overhead was pretty cool.

It's poor design and poor quality from China. The crack may be from bending or twisting under load when the drum bearings are under stress. In other words, poor quality bearings. Great video!

Pretty much the sloppy construction and craftsmanship you'd expect from a budget winch made in China. Good for the occasional laymans use, but nothing more.

badlands is just china junk, not that warn isn't now but this is just harbor freight stuff and not professional quality that you should be relying on. warn still has a little standards left. what's really sad is this isn't a cheap winch, its almost $800 after paying the tax man.

Yeah just trash talk because you flog the hell out of it and pull sh*t weighing heavier than the average consumer. Buy a bigger commercial winch then!

i have an older 12,000 lb Badlands winch... I haven't had any problems with it at all.. I am sure yours is used quite a bit more than mine... I was curious of how the newer designed badlands winches would perform. Badlands works just fine for the amount of time i use mine.... If were going to be doing a lot of recoveries. I'd definitely fork out the money for a better one.... But..... Your Badlands winch paid for itself probably ten times over.... I prefer quality over price. But unfortunately, America has adopted the Chinese way of production. Cheaper product, less quality... Some items at Harbor Freight are just fine for the jobs they are intended. I wouldn't purchase some items for my profession.. Better off with professional quality tools.
