Throughout the 1980's the Pipeline Skateparks' COMBI bowl stood as the ultimate vertical proving ground. If you ripped and wanted to prove it to the masses all you had to do was make your way to the Badlands of Southern California and survive 45 seconds in the beast. In episode 2 of Love Letters to the Badlands, Grosso sits down with Chris Miller, Lester Kasai and Christian Hosoi to talk about who and what made the place so gnarly...

Late to the party on seeing this video! When Big O skatepark closed I started taking the bus from city of Orange as an 11-12 year old. First time @ Pipe I saw the Combi and the full pipe I remember being scared to death on the size of everything but really excited all at once! Mrs. Hoffman treated me like her own kid, even giving me free admission and those pizza grinders with one of those milk carton sized looking Mt. Dews anytime she saw me. The Alba's and Lester were beyond cool to me who was a small non local with a studder and scared of people! I never got comfortable in the square but tried for 6 years 🤣! First front side air ever was on August 5th 1984 in the 15ft bowl, 4 days before my 12th Birthday! I wasn't a Badlander but I tried to skate fast and clean like they did. Between The Big O from my 6th Birthday in 78-82 and Upland soon after that till Mr. Hoffman was forced to close down I couldn't ask for better skate memories 🤙!!!

Chris Miller's cool people. Back at Skate City, I was a total Grom. I'd keep my head down and stay out of people's way, but I'd also work/skate very hard to make the most out of every time I got to that park (never went to any other park), which wasn't very often. One day I was blown away that Chris Miller started talking to me, giving me all kinds of great advice. None of those bigtime dudes ever talked to me (except for the time Duane wanted to shave my head. He wanted to shave everyone's head back then, I said no), so that was really cool to get advice from him.

I worked for a few years at the Pipeline skatepark back in the 70's. Mr and Mrs Hoffman were awesome, there should be a statue of Mr Hoffman near where the pipeline was located. The Alba's were cool and pretty much owned the place, Steve's frontside slide in the pipe was high at about 10 o'clock and would freak everyone out. Micke would practice the same runs over and over and then he would pull something off that would blow your mind. Chris Miller was always pushing it, and i recall him walking in to the pro-shop one day with the bridge of his nose split in two, I think he was about 12 years old, we had to call an ambulance. I have so many stories and pics from the pipeline. Dudes like Tay Hunt, Garret Chick, Craig Rowe were amazing friends of mine and great skaters. I was eventually fired by Mr Hoffman after a long fight across the street from the pipeline in the lemon groves with George Bellanger (soon to be drummer of Christian Death and overall great dude) continued to the parking lot where a customer was hit by a lemon that was thrown as hard as humanly possible. I miss my friends and it was such a great time back then. Cheers

Would you know what Pattie Hoffman's relationship to the Hoffmans is, if any?
@LevonsWound
@LevonsWound 3 года назад
@@americangothic1313 Thanks for asking. Mr. and Mrs Hoffman had a daughter who worked at the park from time to time but I don't recall her name. They also had two sons, Don was the eldest and I can't remember the name of his younger brother, I'm thinking his name was Pat?? he was into music and going to concerts all the time. If the daughters name was Pattie, I don't recall her relationship with the Hoffman's as everyone seemed to get along very well. Sorry I can't help, it was 43 years ago (had to break out the calculator to check my math), time flies, I miss the Pipeline.

Grosso has the best laugh. Upland Combi was a proving ground. Was blown away when I saw this park in Skate Visions. My first board was the Agent Orange. Go figure. Roll forever.

The part about Micky was so spot on. I first went there is 77, never having skated anything but sidewalks before, and am learning to do 180's in the shallow bowl in the back, and these guys would come bombing through jumping bowl to bowl as if you did not exist. They treated everyone like garbage. One time I was at the counter buying some stickers to paste up the bottom of my new Pipeline shop deck (which I still have) and the locals burst in and literally knocked me out of the way because the new Skateboarder magazine just arrived and they were tearing through them looking at pictures of themselves. As a 12 year old I am thinking, 'These guys are all huge dicks.' Which stuck with me the rest of my life, I have never looked up to any athletes, just assuming they are total dicks. Which in hindsight was not far off the mark. Loved the park, hated the locals. I have run into Micky a few times in modern times, and he was super friendly and seemed like a genuinely nice guy, but the vibe at the park in the old days was a mix of contempt and hostility.

This is the greatest show I have ever seen. Who needs porn. This is better. Miller's slam is fucking insane. Most normal people would quit skating. That's why we are not normal. It takes a certain kind. I know I am stating the obvious there. Like drummers in music & goalies in hockey, we skaters just ain't right. Or are we? I would much rather hang out with drummers, goalies & skaters.
