I haen't seen such an indepth , straight forward and honest review of this product anywhere on the internet. Thanks Mark, you're the definite "go to" for gear reviews!
I’m 5’10 and about 180-190 and can confirm medium will fit and not look tight, M and L will both be fine. It’s a great hoodie, pretty wind proof too. Honestly thank you for this review because some ads (and their marketing) make it look like a scam when it’s actually a great product. You knocked it out the park with this overview and seem to have changed tons of peoples minds lol. 10/10
Excellent information. I love fleece because of Rheumatoid Arthritis and weather changes. But modularity is key to keep warm in inclement weather and with a rain proof jacket over it to protect the fleece and you it could make for a great combination. Thanks for your analysis!
Bearskin is sending me a next generation fleece with a rain jacket designed to zip together. I am looking forward to trying that out. Will be a while before I release that review though. Thanks for commenting
Sounds like it’s worth keeping my eye out for a good sale! I totally agree with you on the marketing hype: it screams “cheap” or “scam” to me, but glad to hear it’s actually pretty good. 👌
Thanks Mark! I trust the honest and informed opinions on various outdoors equipment that you share with us. I have thought about this item as a "mid layer" as you described, but the "cheesy" ads put me off.
Thanks for such a concise review. Like you I found Baerskin ads to be too much. Your review has changed my opinion. I am now reconsidering my opinion. Thanks again for a great review.
Thank you for cutting through the hype and intense advertising surrounding this product Mark. I have a friend that bought in to the hype and purchased this jacket and was sorely disappointed. You have brought this back down to a reasonable assessment of what this jacket is which makes it far easier to assess whether or not this is a product someone would be interested in buying. Great review Mark. Thank you for sharing!
Hey Steve. That is unfortunate. There is so much hype around this garment. A lot of it perpetuated by reviewers. I love mine but it is not worth the full price being asked for it. Thanks for commenting
I think it looks like a great hoodie and glad to see it's available in women's sizes. The density of the fleece, the doubling up of fabric in key areas, and the ability to cinch in the cuffs, waist, and hood are all features that cut out the effects of wind and cold even if it is not 'windproof.' An outer shell can be added if needed. Great review, Mark.
Appreciate the honest review, Mark! Yes, I've seen several of their advertisements on the web (who hasn't that's spent any time on the internet?), and like you, most of them just made me not want to watch. But as you said in your closing, getting honest reviews from people who are known for their outdoor knowledge and experience really makes a difference! Glad you also mentioned getting it on sale, too - I took a quick look at their website when the commercials first started, saw the price, and said, "No, thanks!". But I'll keep an eye out for them on sale now - my climate (mid US) is not as harsh in the winter as yours, so it would probably work for me for fall through to early spring, even if a cold snap hits and I had to layer it. Thanks again!
Thank you, like you say when you are bombarded with hyped up adverts for something it turns you off, and you tend to distrust anything said in the adverts, So this is exactly when you need a genuine review.
I order the Baerskin the day of the review, after 5 days no word on shipping, contact support and said it takes up to 2 weeks to ship. After the contact, the Baerskin ship, from where! It shipped from CHINA. So, if you order it, you will wait a while to receive the jacket. Mark great review, and your trusted reviews. I would like to see some reviews on items for car camping, as we are getting older.
Great review. I bit the bullet 3mos ago and dropped $99US for one. No regrets. I love the inside zip pockets for my wallet & cell when traveling. Warm when biking in the NE when there's no snow on the road.
Hi Mark excellent review. You’ve gained yourself a new sub here. I would have loved if they added some polyester reinforcement to the chest and shoulder area (similar to the north face Denali). They would have given it some abrasion resistance when wearing a backpack.
Yeah, I fell to their marketing and bought one (on sale) which I was a bit embarrassed about. But I'm pretty happy with my XL version in dark blue. I have long arms so I was happy that they're long enough. Some of the advertised features aren't important to me (too many pockets) or not really new (draw strings in the bottom etc). I like that the pockets are huge. I can easily wear it around town down to about -5c, but haven't tried it out in very nasty weather yet. (We've barely had a winter here in southern Ontario this year). The brief drizzles I've been out there in haven't come through at all. Things I would change: the main zipper doesn't feel as sturdy as I would like. I wish the liner in the sleeves was slicker like nylon so I could put it on without having to struggle with my shirt sleeves and wouldn't feel so binding when I'm moving around. They could do the whole inside in nylon as far as I'm concerned.
Mark, I own the BAERSkin Tactical Hoodie 2.0 version and I love it. Your review of this product is honest and accurate. I never expected my BAERSkin hoodie to be waterproof, so I have a waterproof shell that I carry in the rear "kangaroo" pockets for when it rains. Great review as always!
@@MarkYoungBushcraft I make it a habit to purchase winter gear if needed in northern climates, rather than here in the Southern States, simply BECAUSE the further North you go the colder it gets, and with that the items are better equipped to handle the colder temperatures. And also the latitude of Germany is about the same latitude as Montreal...so growing up in Germany I am used to cold climates and I can see and feel the difference in quality, between here in Kentucky compared to Iowa or Minnesota quality...👍🏼
I do like the way it looks. I think for the most part, it would be great for where I live in California. We don’t have super cold weather. Great review, Mark. 👏👏👏✌️🇺🇸🇨🇦✌️
Had my doubts about this jacket but after seeing another review, I ordered one. I like my jackets somewhat loose. I'm a little over 5'11"" and weigh 210. I ordered the x large. The fit for me is perfect. I have a couple ventile parkas and heavy cotton parkas and this fits perfect with them. Same for my rain jacket. Also very pleased (and somewhat relieved) with the quality.
@@MarkYoungBushcraft I bought a large roll of it from Great Britain. Had to jump through a lot of hoops to get it and it wasn't cheap. That was many years ago. I've had a tarp, parka and vest made from it. I also bought a Ventile parka from Great Britain from Special Air-Sea Services. It was a limited offering that I heard about through BushcraftUK when I was a moderator there. Again, many years ago. I also have two insulated jackets in Ventile that I bought from Cabelas for $50 each. Orvis was selling similar coats for $400+. When I bought the Cabelas coats, they were on closeout. I'm sure Cabelas had a hard time selling them because no one was familiar with the Ventile fabric. Lovely stuff. Has great water resistant properties and breathes far better than gore tex and similar synthetics. Perfect for hiking in the city or the woods. You never get clammy. It is also ideal for winter outerwear.
Fantastic Review! Thanks Brother . I Wil Definitely Purchase One. I didn't Know about all the extra pockets. Awesome jacket. Have a Great week 24 hours of rain in South Carolina . Hope it goes out to the Atlantic Ocean before reaching NS.
Yes i and my family do not have one of these simply because of the advertising method. Thank you for your review. That may change quickly now . 1 at a time so to speak
Mark, first of all THANK YOU for an excellent review. Second.... I just got mine to check out. So far, so good! And lastly, 4.0 could also use a way to roll down the hood and keep it rolled-up/down (Velcro strap???). Again, THANK YOU!!!
Thanks for your accurate review. I bought one and wore it outdoors for a month this winter. I live on a hill and we get a lot of wind and I found the wind resistance fairly poor and doesn`t match up to their claims. As a mid level layer it`s good but that negates a lot of the pockets. Gave it away. For what it is, I find it overpriced by comparison with other products out there.
G'day Mark, great to see a "proper" fleece. I'm always disappointed with the "regular" stuff. i.e. if its cold enough to wear one, make it a good one. More pockets than a pool table, ...... or two, ....... though better too many than too few IMO and since they're there, I really like the way each and every one is designed. Yes I know its called a "hoodie", but I'd really like the same thing without the hood, because; I hate anything interrupting my peripheral vision + they get in the way of pack yolks/straps. Just gimme a "ball cap", woolly beanie or even a balaclava if its that cold. Only time I ever use one is in the rain, and then that job falls to my "plastic chicken" or "duck" i.e. ................. WP layer ; ) Anyway, very well reviewed mate !!! Cheers Duke.
One thing I wish pull-over hoodies, with the "kangaroo" tunnel pocket in the front would do, is mount zippers on both sides...make them more secure for cell phones and such...I call the flap behind the zipper a "storm flap", helps cut wind penetration...
Nothing turns me off more than bad advertising. If not for your stirling review, I would never consider owning the baerskin hoodie. I am about your size. (5'-10 1/2", and 185#) But with the shoulders and arms of a 6'-2" person, I need X-L, or L-T. Is there a place where a person can try them on? I hate to have to pay to ship a product back that doesn't fit.
Another rigorous gear evaluation from a trusted source. My idea of a good time. V3.0 looks to be a great design of an important layer. The hood? It would be interesting to hear the designer's explanation.
Gosh, Mark. I always have thought that you'd be 6'5" tall and weigh 250lb with XXL hands and being half Bunyan.(your skills with axe, I mentioned before) Next thing I find out later might be you are only 47? Nice jacket, Mark.
Better than felted wool/homespun? (Not sure if that last word is correct, but that's what G👀gle Translate suggested for the swedish word 'vadmal') Felted wool is, to my knowledge, water & wind resistant.
I love my wool Hoodie from Lester River Bushcraft. It's a pullover, so getting it on and off is a little more difficult. I still prefer the pullover, because zippers usually fail before the rest of the the jacket.
Mark I always enjoy your reviews, but with that opening rant on hype being such a turn off you dont even care to look at them to find out... I felt that in my soul. lol But now I know you're 100% honest and unbiased as well as thorough. When Forest Gump came out good grief! If I had been paid $20 for everytime I had to listen to someone rave about it and insist I had to watch it. Have To. You Haaaaave! to watch it. "Life changing, **Must watch!!" Eventually everytime added a year that I didn't. Haha About 12 years later I watched it It was a good movie. ....still waiting on that life changing magic to happen... Just sayin' Anyway good review, looks good & I like the extra thick fuzz. May look into this one. Thanks
I can only assume you are talking about the new product that Baerskin has that included a fleece jacket and a rain jacket. The fleece may be lightly water resistant but not waterproof. I just received the combination and will be making a review after testing. Hope this helps
Looks like a solid piece of gear but I have to agree with you that the advertising put me off this product completely. I got several ads in a row advertising a 67% off sale which made me curious enough to click on to their site. The info says I could buy this jacket for 67% off of its $429 CAD reg price. So I could get this hoodie for $140 CAD. This "Out of your Friggin Mind" pricing made me wary of any other claims they made and just labelled it as a scam. It looks like a good hoodie from your review but I don't trust this type of marketing at all. This company is their own worst enemy. These people strike me as former or future politicians. Caution on your next vote is advised.
Good Video, but my experience was not at all like yours! WORST GARMENT PURCHASE I'VE EVER MADE. I bought the hoodie in 3X and the body fits fine. But the arms on mine are made for some pencil man, they are stretched tight from my wrists to my shoulders so I can't wear it over a long sleeve shirt. And the hood is apparently made for a 50X hoodie as it hangs all the way over my head down to my chin. No adjustment on the back of the hoodie to adjust how far over your head it goes and mine seriously completely comes down to the bottom of my chin, rendering the hoodie unwearable for me. I get NO RESPONSE from their customer service. And from what I've heard from others, returning it is impossible as you will pay more to ship it back to China than you paid for the hoodie and then they still might not refund your money.
@@MarkYoungBushcraft I had to get rid of two Woolrich Winter coats due to bad zippers. Tailors want a small fortune to replace them due to the amount of work involved.
