In a steam turbine, a balance line is a pipe that connects the low-pressure side of the axial thrust balancing device to the suction side of the impeller. The purpose of the balance line is to provide a path for the fluid that passes through the axial thrust balancing device to return to the suction side of the impeller. Without a balance line, the fluid would have nowhere to go, and the buildup in pressure would render the axial thrust device ineffective. The balance line is an integral part of the thrust balancing system in a centrifugal pump with two or more stages. The balance line diameter is sized such that the fluid velocity in the balance line does not exceed 25 ft/s to avoid excessive pressure loss, accelerated seal wear, and flow accelerated erosion or corrosion.
