I’m working on controlling tempos.
I have found that, when competing in solo contests, I lose my sense of tempo.
Specifically, it may “feel” like I am playing at the proper tempo; but in reality I am playing much faster than I intend. I also lose all phrasing and expression.
To address this, I have been preceding all my practices with listening to a metronome to “calibrate” myself. In this practice I didn’t check my tempo prior to playing.
