The debut episode of Bagpipes. In the Barn.
Chris looks through some vintage chanter reeds. He resurrects a straight-cut reed from 1957 and compares the sound to a modern Apps straight-cut reed. Measuring the pitch and the strength using a vintage and a modern chanter.

That was humbling, fascinating, and inspiring. Those reeds and the handwritten notes are historical artifacts, at least to this crowd. Thank you.

Cheers Kevin, agreed. I’m very fortunate to have all these things. What’s really interesting is the similarities between the old reeds and the new ones despite the obvious differences between the two!

Chris, I never cease to be amazed with the speed and dexterity with which you can take a reed that sounds really rough and turn it into something that sounds quite sweet and well tuned. I am much slower, despite having the benefit of viewing your instructional videos, and spend much of my time in confused frustration! I could easily despise you....but I won't. If I were to do so you might not make me any more reeds, and that would be a true tragedy! Cheers!

Ha Les. If you had been doing this for 30 years I’m sure you would find it a lot easier. Thanks for the kind words.

I’m utterly fascinated with this! Did the wood on the old reeds seem to have become brittle, stiff, or maybe even softer over the years, or does it feel like normal, recent cane?

Hello Brian, Great isn’t it. The cane was quite hard and a bit powdery. It seems that once through the crust the cane isn’t too far off the stuff I use but just that bit harder.
