Thailand news - Thailand's baht is surging against the USD and many other currencies amid calls for the Bank of Thailand to try and curb its increases. Thailand's freelancers, including sex workers, will get added protection and welfare from a new bill, floods and mudslides have returned to northern Thailand, whilst dams in central Thailand are waiting for rain, and which area is going to get the go ahead for Thailand's first casino?

Regarding the expat Australian man who has been caught stealing from the 7.11. I don't really agree with what you said about trying to help them. Surely if they can't afford to stay in thailand then they should go back home. I have met many Australian men in thailand who are living on very little and have no health insurance but espect the expat community to help fund their hospital bills.

That's their doing/fault. Surely they made what they knew at the time were bad decisions that resulted in these outcomes. They're what is called irresponsible people... lots of these type in Thailand.

Hi Tim, Here's another story this time from Malaysia. Associated Press. It surfaced last week and today there's more news. "Malaysian Police Rescue 187 More Children As Sex Abuse Probe of Islamic Groups Deepens". A tragic story. To brighten things up a bit, regarding the strong baht of late, give it time, it'll swing back in favor of the U.S.D. and other currencies. Some 5 years ago on one of my trips to Thailand, i got about 30 baht per dollar. It's still a bargain. Farangs this past year made out like bandits

Oh come on Tim, a thief is a thief. The elder Australian guy was stealing Vitamin C, hardly a necessity. And from the look of his belly, he has plenty of money to buy beer. Most of us go without certain items, rather than steal to get them. Why make excuses for criminal behaviour on someone else’s behalf?

⁠@@timnewtontodayhe gave the excuse for his stealing that he didn’t have any money, and you automatically believe him? 😂 You are making a moral statement on the situation because you’re assuming he needs financial help, when he is more likely just a habitual thief. A dishonest person who thieves is dishonest in all facts of their lives, including lying when they caught. You seem to be a bit of a bleeding heart, a tad naive, who desperately wants to see the best in everyone. Which probably explains why the Thai property owners took advantage of you with the failed hotel, why agents scammed you etc etc. He and all the other expats have made a choice to come to Thailand, they are big boys, and it’s not up to moral crusaders to save the day. If you want to make real change, put pressure on the relative foreign embassies to help these people IF and when they ask for it.

@@timnewtontodaythese are grown men who CHOSE to come to Thailand. They are big boys who need to be accountable for their own decisions and actions. I know full well from experience that a dishonest thief is dishonest in all aspects of life, and don’t belief for one minute that he only stole because he doesn’t have money to buy vitamin C. If you really want to make a difference, put pressure on the relative foreign embassies to actually help instead of ignoring these people, IF and when they ask for it.

As for the "free lancers", no benefits without meeting the same obligations that others must adhere to. Thailand suffers if the Baht isn't at least 36 to the US dollar. As soon as the powers to be have made their big overseas purchases/investments and their businesses start suffering, the Baht will weaken again.

As for that 82 year old Australian thief. The current aged pension for Australians is $1116 or about 25,000 baht every 2 weeks. What excuse does an old single man have for claiming they are poor if they come from Australia?

We don’t know if he’s getting, or is eligible, for the pension from Australia. For expats living out of the country for a long time, it’s very complicated to get it.

As long as you meet the 35 year residency/working rule ( although you can get lesser amounts for shorter residency) , are of the age when a pension is available you get it no matter where you are. It is also less than if you remain in Australia as they remove special additions that help you cover some expenses there.

If he's been here for 17 years then how has he been able to meet the visa requirements to stay here, especially the money/income for a long stay visa?.Sorry but I don't feel sorry for those that claim they can't afford to be here and resort to stealing. Perhaps Australia should repatriate people like this?

Maybe have a one time fee for expats to go into some kind of an insurance system. Maybe the insurance system only covers transport to expats country of origin or if enough money maybe help for short period of time til they get back on their feet ?

Agree, too many irresponsible people being coddled and enabled in the name of compassion is leading to a rise in lack of accountability. The starving child has an adult(s) who should be held responsible for that child. If you can't support them, don't make them. If you can't figure out how to prevent making them, stop having intimate relations. It is, and should be black and white as to what is right and what is wrong. I'll bet the senior citizen expat thief has money for beer and/or cigarettes.

Hi Tim You should take a look at Scandinavian currency as well Norwegial krone NOK, Swedish krone SEK and Danish krone DKK is not a tradable currency in Thailand these days

I smirk at the newbies calling out the old sweat cheap Charlies. Imagine coming from the UK and exchanging above 70 baht to the £. Calculate transferring 800,000 back then and transferring now. I remember OAP's wracking the pool tables, playing 4 in a row for beer and always loosing. Always ringing the bell and everyone was delighted, drinks and tips were always on flow and we would barter down but hand the original price over anyway. We are not cheap Charlies we are trying our best to preserve the lifestyle we retired to. We didn't come here and adjust to around 43-44 baht to the pound and never imagined it dropping to an eye watering 36. If today's newbies halved their exchange rate next month would they be budgeting or pretending all is fine. From 72 to 36 is exactly that. Every baht dropped is a winner for all. My Optimism is with BRICS. No idea what I'm talking about there, just staring at the clouds wondering if my exchange rate is still up there doing nothing.

I'm definitely getting less baht for my $. It's important for expats to factor in currency exchange rate swings when planning budgets. A 10 to 15% swing can make a huge difference. Always live below your means so you can survive such swings.

I rekon the casino complex will be in na jomtien in the Ambassador Cityhotel complex, the thai licence proposal has so far stated that they require a 5 billion baht up front fee for the 30 year licence, renewed anually at 1 billion the chosen complex must have a business complex comprising 4 different business's in a resort style complex, the ceo's of wynn group, mgm, and sands group all stated that they had an interest in thailand at recent press conferences where company results were published

Tie the currencies back to the gold standard and do away with the hedge funds and speculators manipulating the market. The down turn in other currencies is in part caused by many governments recklessly printing money.

For pensioners in Thailand, it can be a hard time when Baht surges. They get less money and when you have less money to spend the first place, they save are restaurants visits also visits to many other shops the normally would go to. So, a surges of Thai Bahts not only hurts exporters and the tourist industry it hurts many small businesses i Thailand.

The Thai Baht and Malaysian Ringgit remain more or less consistent because they're both strengthening in value against other currencies. MYR to USD used to be around 4.7 to 1. Now it's around 4.2 to 1

The Australian dollar is still fairly stable against the Baht. And increasing against the US dollar. Also the Canadian & New Zealand dollars are up v US$. 👍

@@Wilko11 I'm Canadian and 3 months ago I was getting just about 27 to the dollar now just 24 so that is a 10 % loss on 1000 dollars. Yes the Canadian dollar has gained on the US though I live in Thailand so the gains I'm making against the US dollar aren't really doing any thing.

The sex workers seem to be unable to get their stories straight, at present they say they don't want benefits, though when Covid was a issue the sex workers were complaining how they couldn't get benefits.They don't want to register because if they do people will know what they do and sex work carries a lot of stigma in Thailand. The sex worker will then lose face which in Thailand a major concern for every individual in Thailand.

Problem is in Thailand you have to buy the Baht first, lose, then buy the dollar. However in Cambodia the USA Dollar can be bought with the UK pound.

its okay however. if ya don't drink too many beers its still about 20 bucks a day on a us holiday and less if you are local. Thai baht worth 10 us or 40 us its still a great place to hang out or vacation. the weather and the people make up the difference !!!!

The Thai baht appreciation is going to be a major problem for Thailand. Pre-pandemic, thb was around 29 thb/usd. I was not living there at the time but remember hearing expats complaining about cost of living. It’s going to go back to that value. From the pandemic low of 38 to 29 is pretty significant. It’s like a 25% devaluation of expat spending power.

I don’t know if it’s true but I’ve heard rumors that with the Yen carry trade unwinding, global capital is looking for a new currency to do carry trades with, and the Thai baht was one of the chosen. If that’s the case, the. It’s not good news. It means the thb will keep strengthen and stagnation for the Thai economy like Japan for the last 30 years.

I think the entire point of freelancing is to not pay Tax... Your not going to get Sex workers or other freelancers to just donate Tax based on the honnor system, Your weak Welfare system is not a sufficient draw for that...

"because of profit taking in gold" reminds me of the days when oil prices fluctuated on "instability in the middle east," etc. In other words, the reporter has no idea really what's going on and just hand-waves two things together. He kind of has to right? I mean any business reporter that comes on and says, "it was another random walk on Wall Street today ... " is going to find himself looking for a new job. It's okay to report the two events, but I'm not buying into a cause and effect relationship just because a reporter says so.

Fat chance to get the pension. The Australian Government treats you like a traitor if you want to apply for the Old Age Pension from here. The rule is, come home and spend your pension in Oz.

The US dollar is in big trouble, they have cut rates yet inflation is still a big problem and will continue going up. I think they have cut rates only because elections are coming up, but if you look at the price of gold it's skyrocketing. And if the US economy is doing so well as they say, why cut rates, the fact is, most of the growth in the US is because of a lot of US gov money printing and spending. So it will be interesting to see how this effects the Thai baht moving forward.

When they cut rates they trying to control inflation. Here in Thailand I wouldn't be surprised if Thai Centrak Bank lower the interest rate today, not because of inflation but because Thai Bakts surges. When the interest is lower Thai Bahts it will be less attractive for foreign investors.

The current U.S. inflation rate is 2.5% the lowest since Feb 22. The great economic work done by Biden/Harris after the orange traitor left a mess has brought inflation down from above 9% and now its within the range the central bank needs to start reducing rates and further reduce costs to Americans. Most economists see this as the correct move as does the stock market. Another 50 points may be on the cards in December, all great news for Harris and bad news for the orange traitor on Nov 5.

Inflation in the USA is yesterday's story. As there are data lags it's probably already is at 2% which is the federal reserve's target. The USA has achieved the coveted soft landing. The market in the USA broke 42,000 that simply does not happen if the economy is bad. China is the one with the problem. They're dealing with deflation. They are lowering their interest rate which is already low. The USA and EU have room to maneuver China is in a tough spot.
