Hi there I got the smaller 16" Mini Might II. I love it! Thanks for this video especially the chart that shows which shims to use to get the desired thickness. Now I'm trying to make slabs as wide and long as possible. One slice of clay from my block doesn't do it. any tips for get using as much of the length and width as possible and not getting show through seams? Thanks in advance, I'm new to using a slab roller anyway.

Glad to help with the footage. For larger slabs, the only way to get what you're looking for is with lots more clay. Try about 1/2 of the bag of clay, make it into a long burrito like shape to span the width of the slab roller wheel. You don't want to go straight to the height of the slab you need. It's all about doing it in steps so that you slowly stretch the slab in North+South and East+West directions evenly. Clay has memory. If you stretch it in 1 direction, it's going to shrink in that direction. You're also going to need to release the slab by hand and turn it lengthwise. You may need more clay than you think. It does take practice and some planning.

I have had this slab roller for about a year. My slabs come out wavy - when I compress with a silicone rib I can feel the difference in thickness. This is my first slab roller so I don’t know if it’s operator error or if this is normal for a tabletop roller. Any suggestions?

Thank you for making this video. I am considering getting that same slab roller and it was super helpful to see how big it is in a real setting! How difficult would it be to move it around a small studio? It looks a little big and heavy for that. Thank you so much for your help!
@miremaker
@miremaker 5 лет назад
Hello there and thanks for checking it out. I think the mobility would depend on what it sits on. You may be able to place it on a large cart built from wood out of 2x4s, 4x4 legs, with large 3-5" diameter locking casters, and a 3/4" plywood top. You'd want it 2ft x 4ft on top, like the table I built. You could use wooden legs that are drilled into a 2x4 frame. You could miter the corners or butt them up end to end, then drill casters into the bottom of the legs, and bam, you can move it around your space. I would recommend that you get locking casters so it doesn't roll away, and for during use. There are cheap black ones at Home Depot/Lowes etc and they may have slightly nicer ones. Check their weight restriction. The slab roller is heavy (I'm unable to locate the weight of the slab roller, maybe I can check the manual). Those can work well, but sometimes depending on your flooring, the red polyurethane wheels are VERY nice. Hard plastic wheels can make a bumpy ride whereas the ones from Amazon give a smoother glide feeling on the floor.

The slab mats are marketed to be great for hand builders but it is absolutely terrible because they warp terribly when they get moist and will warp your clay!

I got this slab roller and I'm having a rough time. About half way through the rolling of the slab the rollers spin and the shims continue to advance but the sheets containing the clay stop. The rollers just seem too slippery to grab the sheet. They only move the shims. Any ideas?
@miremaker
@miremaker 5 лет назад
I'm sorry to hear this is happening for you. Hmmm. I wonder if dampening the roller will give more grip. What is it that the clay is sitting on? Is it canvas, slab roller sheets? Lemme see what I can find about it. Stay tuned.
@eileenknapik6264
@eileenknapik6264 5 лет назад
Hi! Thanks for taking the time to reply. I will definitely try dampening the rollers as you suggested. Currently I am using a slab sheet with the shiny side out so clay doesn't stick to it. The shims move well. I've got the rough side of the shim against the slab sheet. I wonder if canvas would work better. Canvas and dampening the rollers. Definitely worth a shot. The slabs are great once I finally get the clay through.

@@eileenknapik6264 Sometimes it takes a little bit of pushing the boards through with your other hand to get it going. Also, if I'm picturing this correctly, you want the rough side of the board against the slab roller wheel. The clay may also need more ease going through the roller, more flat like an axe head. Hmmm
@eileenknapik6264
@eileenknapik6264 5 лет назад
@@miremaker Absolutely. The only way I've been able to get it to work is to make a shim clay shim sandwich. It's been working great that way.

Hey Andrew. The table for the slab roller - did you build it or did you buy the table legs from Bailey? If you built it, can you share any helpful details, i.e. what you bought to make it?
@miremaker

I think mine didn't come with it/I didn't buy them. I had a table in mind in my studio that I built so I used that instead of the bailey legs 👌

How do you know how may boards you need to put in so that the clay comes. out at an exact thickness? If I want a 1/8th thick piece, does that equal 1 1/8 board?
@miremaker
@miremaker Год назад
Look at 12:13 of the video. I made a chart based on the boards supplied with the roller. I assigned them colors based on thickness. They essentially give you 4 boards, with 2 different thickness variations.

@@miremaker thanks for the reply. I was looking at the more portable looking Shimpo mini slab roller, too. My space is tight and I want to be able to store it once in a while if needed. I'm doing ceramics in my office, lol, social isolation has me improvising. But I'm considering this one.
@miremaker

@@onehotpepper how has that been going? Did you decide on a roller?
@onehotpepper
@onehotpepper 3 года назад
@@miremaker I did, thanks. I went with the Shimpo mini. Ordered it from the Ceramic Shop. It weighs about 35 lbs and I can easily travel with it to different rooms or in the car if needed. If one feels like making pottery outside on a table, this is an easy roller to take along. It is not as good as the ones in the studios, but works for what I need it. It's good! Very happy with it.

how thick can you start the slab? can it be uneven thickness?
@miremaker
@miremaker 3 года назад
You can make it as thick as 7/8" (19mm) if you aren't using any boards, I used slab mats. It's a fixed height roller, so it will never be uneven as long as you use the boards (or equivalent thickness boards) that come with it for your clay.
