We've done it. We finally hit up the infamous Hong Kong Bakery in Mangere Bridge, Auckland with our guest Boomer of SWIDT fame.
We check out the Steak & Cheese, both flavours of the Chop Suey pie and then top it off with some cheese sticks.

Have never rated Hong Kongs pies and I use to get roasted for it! Rosbake is the best pie in Mangere Bridge hands down

I grew up in Mangere Bridge and my favourite thing by far from the Hong Kong Bakery was their Banana Bread Rolls (as in a yeasted bread - not cake). I have lived away from Auckland for the last 20 years and still think about their banana bread rolls and miss them so much. I have not found anything like it anywhere else, nor a recipe online.

2 things I have to agree with Boomer... 1) Mince N Cheese > Steak N Cheese... 2) Who puts vegetables in Chop Suey.. Always thought Hong Kong Bakery OK if passing through Mangere Bridge ... Boomer prolly prefers Penny Lane's Bakery in Onehunga

Nah Hong Kong was the best by far, wat happened is that a couple years ago they must’ve changed pie makers. I noticed it when I went and got a mince n cheese pie I could tell by sight that something had changed. Even the pastry wasn’t puff. Full of crap now. I wondered why the other bakery by the roundabout was full of people. You can’t fool the customers.

There pies a yuck its like a hot jellymeat pie. The last one I had gave me the shits. But there cheese sticks and bread is the best. Thats all I'd go there for. But if you want to wake up in the middle of the night with stomach cramps then go running to the toilet for a mud splatter I'd highly recommend the steak n cheese jelly pie and make sure to grab it just before closing time as its probably at the peek of bacteria growth by then.
