Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are RU-vid, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s RU-vid channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her RU-vid channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

Huh! That is so helpful. I rarely use synthetic fertilizer, and when I do, I always grab a bag of 10-10-10 because that's what I've always done. I think an old man once told me that's what I should use and he seemed wise and had a nice garden so I took his word for it. As I started to learn what plants actually need, I started wondering "Why the same amount of N, P, and K in the fertilizer?" I feel so much smarter now. Thank you!

You are so smart, Ashley. You amaze me. So I have a question: I have 7 acres of pasture that has had horses on it for 30 years. The soil is 8.4-9 ph! I've been told to apply 30% diluted white vinegar to it to kill the huge numbers of weeds, and also to acidify the soil. What are your thoughts on this? My beautiful Palomino passed away in May, so this year I really want to get after the weeds which have sprung up during the Colorado drought. And thank you for helping us slackers through with a smile!

Great video Ashley, I have learnt a significant amount from your generous sharing of wisdom and it's great to see the video editing evolving to the next level. I don't know how to do it, but something the bigger creator channels do that works well is to segment the information into chapters and I think there is a way to do that in youtube studio? That way it's a bit easier if we miss something to have a dedicated timestamp to go back to. Like: intro: 00:00 - 00:34 excess P & K: 00:35 - 2:33 excess P examples: 2:34 - 2:56 compost & manure: 2:57 - 3:24 excess N: 3:25 - 4:17 nature tax: 4:18 - 4:40 soil test kits: 4:41 - 5:00 remediation/fixes: 5:01 - 5:20 recommended fertilisers: 5:21 - 5:52 outro: 5:53 - 6:00 Hope this helps, just want to communicate again that there is some amazing information delivered in this video, would be a nice addition to see in future videos if it's not too complicated :)

Phosphorus is so over used . Most big companies have a mono potassium phosphate bloom enhancer that is not in the correct ratios and used in high amounts. And the same as balanced fertilizers, too much phosphorus will lock out calcium as well. Potassium we see mag unavailable ect . Great video as always ! And excellent advice on getting a soil test ! The expression less is more definitely applies to plant nutrition. And most people don't realize dumping high ppm fertilizer onto soil, it eventually ends up in their water table and gets consumed.

I have a cannabis specific question. I use a 3-3-3 organic blend for the whole life cycle of the plant and have been having good results. The theory is that the plant goes through the N at a faster rate than P and K in veg which banks those excess nutrients in the soil and breaks them down to be available later in flower when they are needed. In my mind, applying that 3-3-3 in flower sort of becomes a 3-5-5 or something with the residual nutrients that may not have been used in veg. Appreciate any thoughts you have on my theory. Thanks again
@GardeningInCanada
@GardeningInCanada Год назад
Plants us P & K twice in a life cycle. First as seedling and then later as flowering. The issue with the P & K being over applied in the beginning and hanging around till its used is that it competes with the micronutrients and limits there uptake. Which theoretically is going to cause issues with the harvest. Now in an container setup, with a heavy feeder like cannabis you could have a ton of counter arguments to this. Thats the beauty of science hahaha

Not as much because you are controlling the levels of everything, plus the main medium water is different. for hydro I always follow the suppliers recommended rates.

I have an unopened tub of "balanced fertiliser" I also have well aged manure for the spring. Any suggestions for what to do with the fertiliser?
@GardeningInCanada

You can toss it into the compost and let the microbes use it for their decomp work

Thanks Ashley, I'll put the fertiliser in the compost bin. Am I ok to to add the aged manure to the soil? When I tried looking up NPK values for aged cow manure I've seen a lot of variation: 1-1-1.or 0.6-0.4-0.5, I understand it would depend more on what the cow is fed. I have clay soil so thought covering with manure or digging it in would improve it.

Is there any way I can do a soil test for potting mix? I grew some cannabis in 1/3 potting mix 1/3 compost 1/3 aeration. I fed with gaia green 444 and 284 every 3 weeks and fish fertilizer every week until early flowering phase. I was thinking since it already fed so much 284. I could maybe not feed as much dry ammendments next year and use mostly fish fertilizer.

Grab one of those kits. it does potting soil, just make sure its homogenous as humanly possible. This is the amazon link geni.us/kiIhmXB But Westcoast is cheaper: bit.ly/3QtWzR6

Hiya, do you have any tutorial videos using soil testers you mentioned in this video? And any videos using pH meters or other equipment? I bought an Apera pH meter and it's complexity kind of scares me to use it ha. I don't want to ruin it. And I don't want to be taking inaccurate readings 🤦😁

@@GardeningInCanada 🎉 yes!! Thank you! I have more questions about this pH in case you want to answer any of those in the video 😁... Like if I want to make my own grow medium mix with multiple single-ingredient items but want an end result with a good pH... I was going to test the pH of each item & then once I know their pH levels, is there a "formula" or something to help to figure out the proportions of each item to get that "prize" end-result pH of the homemade mix?
@lisaprice7116

@@GardeningInCanada and are there any situations I'd need to test pH of an insoluble material that I can't mix into a slurry to test? And if so, how do you test the pH of them then? That's the only 2 other questions I had actually 😅

You could honestly go up slightly on the potassium side and down a bit in nitrogen. But overall it works great. If you look at the pinned comment these is a link to a flower and fruit fertilizer. That’s going to work magnificent
