i am nursing a 36 yr old calico. she has never had special food untill 5 yrs ago. she has been thru much but still wakes us everyday at 6 am for breakfast. age brings tradition. im just blessed to have her this long. she needs this home made food. actually all 9 of my cats. also have a now 30 yr old male tuxedo.
Finally!!! A home made cat food that doesn't contain vegetables!!!! I can't believe how many videos I've watched by vets saying they need vegetables. Thank you so much!!!
@@iateerensmom2178 💯I can understand that regular people would make that mistake, but when a vet says it, it makes me question what they're teaching all doctors!! LOL!
This was one of the easier recipes for making cat food I have seen on the internet. The only thing I would do different is after cooking the turkey, I would put all the other incredients together in a bowl separately and mix them together thoroughly. Then I would pour them evenly onto the turkey and mix thoroughly. That way it is uniformly present in the turkey. I liked what the Vet had to say about carbs and vegetable in cat food. Some people would make cats into vegetarian. Low carbs is good for cats and human who are diabetic or pre diabetic. Diabetes is a dietary illness (Type 2).
@@MaryKane-qv5vz I wouldn't take dry cat food away from her totally as she loves it but use it more as a treat like..... but it is healthier to feed healthy wet food as main source of food. I do give my cat dry cat food but he only gets 3/4 c - 1 c. dry food a day.....I put out 1/2 cup first thing in the morning and give him his 10 dental treats and he will eat the treats first while I take kids to school and then by 11:30-12:30 I give him 1/2 can ACANA 5 oz can cat food (I've been slowly introducing him to homemade cat food to get him to like it as he won't touch table food at all... go figure) and store the other half in the fridge and he is good all day........ we make sure to schedule in play time to give him exercise and he will graze on the dry cat food during the day... more like taking a snack in between playing or sleeping....... at around 5 pm I take the other half can of his wet food out to get to room temp and by 6:30 or so he gets the other half of that. Usually he still has at least half of the dry cat food I gave him in the morning in his other bowl so I don't add anymore for the day but if he is out of dry cat food in his bowl (usually when he is super active he will graze more) I will add only about 1/4 c. more for him. After he eats the last of his wet cat food and my kids are done showering my cat likes to have a play session with my son for an hour or so before bed. But as I said I've been slowly introducing homemade cat food to him as I heard it is best to slowly introduce new diets for success........ but even when no more canned cat food and he is on homemade wet cat food I'll keep to the schedule I have as a little bit of dry cat food a day isn't bad........ just watch the kind...... I buy ACANA dry cat food which has better ingredients than a lot of others at the stores .......
@@MaryKane-qv5vzI'm sorry but I WOULDN'T take advice from anyone who tells you to keep feeding your cat dry food. Even the so-called "best and healthy" dry food is garbage. When I was feeding my babies the best dry food my two boys almost died from a blocked urethra, and always had health issues. Once I gradually took them from dry to wet grain free food they improved a lot. Once I mixed the wet food with raw they improved even more. They had a senior panel done about a month ago and the vet praised me on how health my, 16, 17, and 19 year old cats are 🤔
I feed over 15 cats so please take us into consideration when you post a recipe. I am very interested in cooking for them. I do learn a lot from your videos. The cats are not all in my house, 7 are indoor and the rest live in my yard. Anyhow, right now I feed a mixture of waruva, primal nuggets, I mash a hard boiled egg sometimes, stella and chewy raw freeze dried (I buy a variety of raw freeze dried) and sometimes I boil chicken or fry porkchops, less often they also get makeral and tuna. So they get a large variety. Its very hard to cook 1 recipe for so many cats and have them eat twice a day. I have feline complete for a suppliment when I feed the cooked alone. Their health is most important to me. I love these guys.
I'm in your boat with 9 of mine and a half dozen strays. I have one that vomits too much and I have been giving her chicken scraps. Everyone else will have to make do with 9 Lives. I will add the eggshells though.
I want to pose the question to him about what filler would be the most beneficial and least damaging, as I too am feeding more cats that I signed up for. I have 2 of my own but now have 4 more who eat here.(and who I got fixed among many other strays) So while I like this recipe quite a bit, I need a filler to make it stretch. I may just have to feed half as much and continue with kibble. BTW, check out Purina One True Instinct for kibble. It's the best I've found for value/ingredients and all the cats I've fed like it. It's way better ingredients that those "top quality" brands. So surprising.
What is wrong with everyone these days? Dr. Jones is kind enough to help all of us with pets out there and there are so many downright hateful comments. Dr. Jones, I just want to say how much I appreciate you. Please overlook the mean comments. The world would be a better place if everyone followed the golden rule. I will be making this for my cat.
Many people do not recognize the value of eating healthy food. Well it prevents having high medical bills for one thing! Dr. Andrews, I am grateful for all the free information and energy that you expend because you love animals and people.
I'm sorry but NOT everyone agrees with his message including me. That said there's always a good and polite way to say and do anything. In my case I just decided to take what advice I agree with and leave the rest without commenting because he may or may not be right I don't know, but in any case I really do appreciate his efforts.
TY - my 15 yro cat stopped eating but she was drinking water- I really thought she would die- she wasn't grooming & lost weight.I put can food on her paw & she licked it off 2x & she drank milk w sugar- then I added tuna& salmon & she ate them and bounced back I just made her hamburger & she ate it- I ordered pure meat treats,& OTC med for diabetic cats- & dental treats. Ty for the recipe- She's eating more& grooming - she had been depressed due to loosing her buddy suddenly 7 most ago& she's been very clingy& very picky Abt food I think it's cheaper & better to make it myself - blessings from NJ
Can you PLEASE be my cats vet?! I wish every vet, especially my own had this level of insight and this well versed in what cats actually need to survive, vs what is commercially advertised and endorsed.
Dr Jones no longer practices because he was forced out of practicing by the arrogance and entitlement of other vet bullies. Yes, it really happens. Happened to me.
Have watched many of your videos and now this one. I am so fortunate to have found you and so grateful for your professional and non-biased opinion and advise. If all vets were more like you. Thank you for being you and keeping it real.
Dear Dr. Jones: I have seen a few of your videos in the past. Now I come across this homemade cat food receipe. All my cats have gone to the rainbow bridge and I am looking to adopt two more. I know this receipe will keep them healthy. Thank you for sharing with us.
Good morning May peace and blessings be upon you I am so sorry for your loss every cat is unique and one can never replace the other the only true semblance of peace i know after losing a few of my cats is that one day i too will join them in the hereafter. Cherish and help every feline soul until the day you die.
Started making this for my 2 cats Kiddo 12 yrs. old & Ivy 9 years old. I was worried they wouldn't like it after all of these years of feeding them store bought cat food. Ivy took to it immediately. At first Kiddo was like "what is this"? But once he started eating, he has been all in. Besides turkey I have used beef & have used chicken. Chicken seems to be their favorite. I also add a cup of water for added moisture. The one thing I noticed is they don't eat as much as they did the canned food. Maybe because it is much more dense than the canned. I don't know, just a guess. Anyways, thank you for sharing the recipe. Good to know my pals are eating healthy!
Thank you for this comment because I have three cats. Two of them are kittens that are about 11 months old and they are getting to the point where I have to take them off dry kitten kibble but currently wet cat food which I feed my older cat is too expensive. I could only buy it for my senior cat who has been used to it for 12 yrs and won’t eat anything else. For these two, I would rather make it as it’s more affordable that way
@@debbieshomes6984, whole foods, sprouts, winco, any store similar to these. Maybe Walmart and for sure amazon. I believe it’s best to buy the whole seed and grind it yourself a little at a time as needed, or freeze it. Pre-ground will get stale fast and loose many of it’s value. 😸
…. We are pampering the 16 yr old neighborhood cat. I’ve been feeding her ground Turkey with a little Earths Best baby food “chicken pot pie”, no added salt or anything else but was worried she wasn’t getting things she should. Thank you, this will be her new diet starting on Friday.❤️
@@Ikeaagain Taurine is considered an essential nutrient, but it can be obtained from a diet that contains animal-based proteins. If taurine levels are deficient it can cause damage to heart and impaired vision. Conditions are slow to develop. Turns out how you cook the ground turkey depends how much taurine would be lost. Taurine is available without a prescription as a supplement and supposedly no side effects if too much is given. Your vet can help you with dosage or just check the back of bags of cat food for their taurine content. Or if you emailed an online prescription place like Allivet you could ask them for exact dosage. Hope this helps
I followed this recipe and mixed it with my cat's favorite wet food. He loves it! It has been Only 10 days, ketone in his urine has disappeared, glucose is lowered, and he is gaining weight! Thank you so much!
@@chowe9 that is measured by collecting urine and testing with ketone urine test strips purchased at a regular pharmacy or online. They’re made for people but work for all mammals. You can also get strips that measure glucose/ketones together.
Thank you very much Dr. Jones, that was very helpful, I am keen to feed my animals a nutritious and balanced diet to keep my vet bills down. Ha, ha, my little rescued German Spitz, just cost me $4057.00 for two dental appointments, could have paid for a gold bridge for myself with that. Pets are members of the family, so it is my responsibiliy to take are of them. Just hope the little guy lives many more years to get some benefit from all the expense. Guess its pay back time, he had a gingival growth, and we are awaiting the biopsy results. Next week I have to have my biopsy. Fingers crossed on both!
Why does my cat steal raw broccoli & bread? Also, we dont know her past.... She is always meowing for more food, i have to either distract her with letting her attack play and try not to have her break things in the process...or she just sleeps)... When & how much are you supposed to feed a cat?
I have been swapping out extra lean ground beef and chicken breast shredded up with all the supplementary ingredients he tells you to add for variety, how have your pets been getting on this diet?
Love the recipe but why sunflower oil? Isn’t that a highly processed seed oil? Would olive or coconut oil work? Or could the oil be substituted with a small amount of sardine?
Lard could be good, fish oil too, and for the love of all that is holly, stay away from coconut oil. Only use it if it's required for a specific recipe.
We live in the country. Cats getting dumped all the time. Right now we have 15 cats, 12 of those are inside only cats. All are spayed & neutered. I dont even want to tell you what out monthly Chewy bill is. Catfood prices have gone up sooooo much. So, now Im attempting to make and freeze catfood to see if I can save $$. Keep your fingers crossed for us!! 😊
I feed Dr. Pierson’s recipe to all but one of my cats and fosters. But I’ve passed your recipe (sharing your RU-vid channel, too) with so many people who want to feed a balanced, healthy diet to their cats, but are, for whatever reason, hesitant to dive into preparing Dr. Pierson’s recipe. I can’t thank you enough for sharing your knowledge with all of us!
I understand that cats are carnivores but mine enjoy some addition of pumpkin to keep them regular, asparagus to support their urinary health and kefir with chia seeds for their gut health. Not to mention grass they will munch on like rabbits ☺ They also get some herbs and spices for general health and to keep worms away. I add parsley, turmeric, diatomaceous earth, neem leaf powder, pumpkin seeds and some other things as needed
@@KCville6324 wild cats do eat the whole prey, including the plant matter in the digestive tract. so plants in their diet isn't really bad, but just not all that nessecary.
@@Hannah-vt7lc Animals have great instincts so I believe and also observe that if they don't need something or it may be harmful for them they will avoid it. Kefir and asparagus though are the things all my cats devour and cannot get enough of. So I conclude it is good for them and necessary.
This is perfect.. I've been feeding my cat raw chicken only for some extra o and he's been so much better. I've been providing some urinary dry food and plenty of canned food with it but he's insane over that meat. I'm just going to replace the canned food and slowly remove the dry. They'd rather eat small animals anyway. Some of the few cats that actually eat what they kill though I'd rather them leave the birds alone. They live completely indoor with access to a completely fenced large catio run and they still catch many critters in there. Thanks Dr Jones. I have a bunch of ordering to do over on your site
I heard that you should not feed them raw chicken because it is not the same as the they kill the chicken themselves. Also due to bird flu how do you know if it is safe?
@@rivkahhoneysgirl5442you have to feed with a supplement. Their systems are different than ours and they break down the foods differently. He still gets a variety of foods but he recently had a bout of bladder stones so he's back on raw again. Honestly, if he'd eat mice from the pet store, I'd feed him that. That's next to try (the frozen kind, not live). He doesn't really like cooked food other than canned
Amen! Yep I am so freaking proud of you for sharing this I agree with this whole heartedly I've used beef liver and goats milk and pumpkin to save cats lives that I've rescued that are emecated it really does a number of things for them helping them gain wait and get on there way going back to being able to eat normal food again I cook it into a paste just until there strong enough to get back on track with there lives we also give them hemp CBD oil for anxiety and comfort
I love you and my cat should...I love this food recipe because it is so basic and simple a real diet cats would eat from the most basic natural forms...love the eggshell! Along with krill oil, and your own supplement. Thank you for being a Voice of love and logic for pet parents.
Absolutely terrific recipe! It’s been hard to find cat food on store shelves now and this will save our whole cat family, thank you so much! Do you have homemade dog food? Where can we order the krill and other vitamins?
I bought the Ultimate Feline Cat multivitamin-mineral supplement and on the Lable it states to, "Add 1 scoop to cat food daily". But for recipe given you state, "Add Two scoops to 1 lb. of food." Confused which to do, would you please comment. ? ? Appreciate, Blessngs.
I feed using Dr. Lisa Pierson’s recipe, but have many friends who want to feed a good homemade diet but don’t care to tackle her recipe. I’m passing this along to those who I know will be interested. As always, thank you so much, Dr. Jones!
I tried giving my cat ground turkey, and he wouldn't touch it. I put it out for the ferals, and even they didn't want it, nor did the possums, raccoons, etc. After putting it our for several days and nights something finally ate it. I wondered just what people are eating that the animals refused to eat.
All the ground turkey at the store has rosemary, which is toxic to kitties. What are your thoughts on this? I've been following you for years and really admire your work in holistic animal care!
So what, you just made a ground turkey and added some pills to it and call it a cat food? Dude that's not cat food, that's just meat. I mean sure cat will be happy to eat pure meat, I mean I can skip all this ground part as well and just throw chicken pieces to my cat, he'll be the happiest cat ever.
***Urgent question*** 1 teaspoon of egg shells was roughly 5000 mg instead of 1000 Is it dangerous to have too much calcium? Should i just go with 1000 mg as opposed to a teaspoon?
Oh my, kitty is lovin it. I also want to thank you for a bouncy, playful 8 yr. old beauty. That’s right, our dog is now eating better than we. Thanks Doc! Her poopoo has really stepped up along with her energy. 🎀
Hey sir could i ask a question? I have some kittens and 3 adult cats And they actually eat veggies i found a recipe that has Boiled carrot pieces Boiled potatoes And chicken And smash everything all up and i really want to do that recipe 😺 Could i ask is this healthy for cats?
Excellent! Can you use beef? My cats love beef and are meh on poultry. What about using raw meat? Would you consider not drying out the egg shell? I’m thinking there’s probably quite a bit of nutrient loss in the membrane still on the shell. Somebody recently gave me a low quality grain free dry cat food. My frugal side got the better of me and I mixed some in with the quality GF food I feed them (as a supplement to their wet). Well, it gave my 3 1yr old kittens the shitooskies. Before I threw out the bag, my little dog got into it. The next morning she vomited and had loose stools. Up until then I thought it was that the cats are still so young and haven’t been exposed to much of a variety of brands. I’m so disgusted with commercial foods. Your recipe, my dear sir, is very easy. Am passing yr video on to my sister. Pretty sure she’ll try it on her pickiest-eater-n-the-world cat, Miss Ruby. What made me think of the egg membrane is Mercola’s cat & dog Joint Support uses egg membrane instead of glucosamine. Ok, this is so off topic it’s not even about cats… My old beagle has collapsing trachea, was choking so often throughout the day & night I was contemplating calling the hospice vet. Then I started giving him the Joint Support, followed the dose instructions, and he improved quickly. I couldn’t believe after all the other suggested products I tried to no avail, this worked for him! I’ve since added Grass Fed Bone and Marrow by Ancestral Supplements. I can’t run out of either, but especially not the Joint Support because if he’s off of it for only a day he’s back to choking like crazy and it takes several days for the supplement to get him back on track. I hate to sound like an advertisement. I am hoping this might help others’ pets. Collapsing trachea is so awful for our poor dogs and very stressful for their owners.
I wish the cats would eat the raw eggshells but we couldn’t get them too. They did lick them sometimes (get the membrane). I think drying them to grind is best solution. You can save them once oven dried and grind a mess at once. Or rinse them, set out to air dry & store till u have alot and grind a mess at once.
I just want to say thank you for making this video. What made me trust this video is the fact that it is not over-produced/over-edited and it isn’t filled with any generic looking science animations. You are genuinely just trying to teach people how to make good food for their pets, especially if they don’t want to go on the drastic route of a raw food diet. My cat’s coat has gone from dull and brittle to having a sheen and she seems to be shedding less. At the same time, she has more energy in these last couple of weeks and it is very refreshing to see her moving about more. I even bought your multivitamin formula and mix it in with the food as you showed and I do believe it is absolutely helping her on the way to diabetic remission. I can’t find the sunflower oil in any local grocer so I’ve substituted olive oil for now, which reads as being safe for cats in similar doses and I’m also still transitioning them so it’s current;y mixing in with their Hill I/D wet food. But no complaints so far. I’ve been pulling back my cat’s kibble and using it as a treat, no more free feeding. Thank you for this!
Thank you so much for your video. I’ve been looking at a lot of videos and I’ve already tried many different ways to entice my cat to eat healthier with homemade cat food. I use the egg shells from my chickens and all the other ingredients that you use. What would you recommend for them to want to eat it. They like the store-bought cat food and I know that it’s not good for them. I feed my dog, my homemade dog and she loves it, but the cats on the other hand do not like the cat food I make💗
Egg shells are EGGcellent for humans too! Same technique, sprinkle in food or take in water. I would use 1/4t a day to supplement my raw cultured dairy. Don’t waste the shells!!
Actually you can take clean dry eggshells crushed and put in apple cider vinegar to make a tonic. The vinegar extracts the vitamins/minerals and it is interesting to watch the magic reaction it does together.
I had a Siamese cat that lived twenty-three human years. The other three lived to be 18 human years old.:-) they were all rescued kittens. Thanks to dr. Andrew, I have more knowledge on how to take care of my 3 rescue dogs and one rescue cat now. Without breaking my wallet. Very thankful for Doctor Jones's veterinarian expertise. Keep up the good work Doctor Jones you've been a blessing to a lot of people and their pets
Thank you for this. I just love Murray, he's so squishy. He looks always looks mildly annoyed when you're moving your hands when talking. He wants you to be still. Such a typical kitty, demanding perfection at all times.
Murray is so cute and fluffy. I would like to hug him. And Tula in the background is just as chill. Senior cats and dogs tend to be this way because of their age and I prefer this behavior more and that is why I gravitate towards senior pets.
I just adopted a stray cat that was hit by a car and has a head tilt(neurological) his gate is fine and he can walk and run away from me 😂, I was wondering is there a diet I should be feeding him.?
Doc, can you PLEASE come out with a series of these!! So many people are wanting to know how to make BALANCED species appropriate B.A.R.F. and carnivore meals for their cats and dogs. Thanks a lot for this video!
I was hoping you would do a video like this! Thank you so much! I was wondering if you maybe had a tuna & salmon recipe, too? Love the coffee grinder for the egg shell. I can't wait to try this for my cats. 😁❤
I would never add seed oils to my cat food. Cod liver oil (uncooked!) will deliver the omega fats they need. Water packed sardines are great for calcium.
My 20 year old cat is picky . She loves beef liver , frozen fish cooked in the air fryer . Chicken meat . And she likes just a little. Jellied cranberries. I love your videos . Thank you
Thank you so much for this easy video. After so much research people made this seem incredibly complicated and really try to dissuade you from making food for your pets
Thankyou so much, new sub :) Im Vegan but my cat is not and my critters need what they need. I'm a Horticulturist who is now studying to become an Ornithologist with App Animal Science and Natural Medicine for Animals. I started out in life riding horses but went into App Human Sciences to become a Specialist Nutritionist/Biomechanist and Sports Coach... We have a shortage of Avian and Equine Vets out here in the country and am now full circle back 50 years later and back to my first love 'Critters' :) Anyway my now 27 year old cat Sha will appreciate this :) With the ground flax it actually has the perfect balance of Omegas (No need for the Krill oil) trhe issues of omegas is their balance of 3:6:9 which means it doesn't matter how much you have if you dont have the right ratio in humans that is and dont see the differ in that nutrient requirement for the the Ine's criiter kingdom...
Cats are carnivores and oil is not in their natural diet, nor ours. The story of oils is eye opening, please use only the animals fat and not oils when making your cat's food.
Canned pumpkin isn't available where I live, so I buy pumpkin, which is extremely common here, and steam it for hubbie's favorite cake and pie recipes. I've always scooped out the stringy innards for my dogs. Once we got a cat, she chases the dogs off the pumpkin, and has her feed first, lol. I guess my entire family loves pumpkin!
Once you get all of the supplements it's way cheaper. Ground turkey and chicken is way cheaper than cat food. I have been buying hills digestive and for 3 cans a day for only 3 days it's 29.00 😮crazy I hope this works out so my 14 yr old cat doesn't throw up as much
I just watched Dr Marty "health cat food" I was horrified by all the healthy fruit and veggies he proudly rattled off. I'm only a high school graduate but I'm thinking Oh HELL NO! There's not a cat on the planet who would willingly eat that CRAP. My cats are 16, 17, 19 and so far so good. I feed them the same raw ground beef I eat, mixed with a top of the line grain free can food. I give them kidney and whole body supplements for cats by standard process. So far they're pretty healthy, but because I'm worried that I might not be doing the best for my babies I'm looking for guidance to keep them healthy and happy for many years to come.🙏
Thank you for this Andrew! Can you consider doing a video or a few on dealing with cat bullies? I have a small rescue and currently house 21 cats. All the adults - except one who is sick, are spayed or neutered. The two biggest bullies are big adult male Sealpoint/Siamese mixes. I know their breed tends to dominate. How can I get them to mellow out? Interestingly, I have a 16 yr old, declawed, thin Maine coon who is the only one who will kick their a$$ and gets them to back off. All she does is growl at them. I wish I could get her to train the others, lol. She’s the Queen and “no one messes with the Queen!”
Cats eat the intestines of their prey which quite often include veggies in that critter's diet. So they do consume veggies to some degree. Many carnivores eat some amount of grass and a few other veggies. I like Moringa. Super food. I think it would be beneficial in their diets as well as ours. Limiting the volume of carbs.
We can barely afford to feed our 3 kitties, store bought cat food, ages 10,14 & 18. All rescues. Lucy the oldest, per the vet, is allergic to milk & seafood. Much of this food doesn’t seems to satisfy them & they don’t always finish it… then sit wanting something else. I don’t think the food recipes are consistent either… they will eat one time & stick there nose up the next time. Really need help!! Thank you, Katie
Our cat has HCM and he’s a raga muffin. We switched him to your homemade recipe. He loves gravy. How can we make a healthy gravy to add to his food? I’m thinking sunflower oil, chicken drippings, gelatin and organic corn starch?
I just ordered Dr. Jones ultimate feline health formula! Please do more videos on other feline recipes. I ordered the grounded flax seed, taurine and krill oil I can’t wait to feed this to the mom cat and her 4 kittens I rescued. I’m just learning about cat foods and can’t believe the pieces of meat were just gluten!
