Thanks Josh, I’ve removed my air layer so it’s perfect timing as I work on my Swamp Cypress.

excellent, you will be able to apply this technique to the removal site of the air layer to get some nice fast healing.

One of the differences between your Swamp Cypress and my Florida Bald Cypress is the Swamp Cypress has bark where the Florida Bald Cypress only has a thin skin bark which eventually sheds off to give us the red color of the trunk. I liked when you did the first work what bothers me now is it looks like you have a "T"bar when looking from the front. For the first time in 4 years my bald cypress leaves actually changed to that rust color, I live in south Florida, I have seen some bald cypress photos in the upper part of Florida which lost all of the leaves in the winter. I was thinking about you just the other day that it had been awhile since we had seen one of your great videos, glad to see you back but I do remember your spring work will begin soon!

Great video and thanks for the update! Is late winter/early spring the best time to reopen a wound or can you do it in the summer as well?
@BonsaiEn
@BonsaiEn Год назад
You will want to re open a wound just before the tree is about to have its strongest push of growth, so in this case we are coming up on our spring season and are starting to feel some warmer weather, so it wont be too long before the tree takes off and that wound will benefit from the strong growth. If you do it late in the growing season the tree will be slowing down and you will subsequently get slower healing.

Hi Josh, very detailed and informative video, thank you. Could you please let me know when is a good time to re-pot a Swamp Cypress and also to do some structural pruning on it ? I live in Sydney.

@BonsaiEn Год назад
When the new buds begin to swell, have a look on the tree to find some dormant buds and once they start to swell and break do it then, if the buds fully break open and leaf out then it is too late. This timing is different for everybody, it can even be different for the same species in the same garden. Its just a matter of watch and react.

Trees coming out great man! I like the style u chose too. Just made a major seal on mine yest. I want to know whens the best time to cut these back to get better ramification.? Does the branch have to be a certain age say to start getting buds or back buds? To me they seem to bioforcate at weird places
@BonsaiEn
@BonsaiEn Год назад
These things bud like crazy and from my experience they will bud right behind where you cut, this makes it easier to choose where the ramification is. i find the best time to prune them is late spring / early summer, they seem to respond better with a bit of heat around. Obviously though a big factor in how a tree will respond will be its health as a whole so if it is well fertilized, well watered, has good sun exposure and a good healthy soil system / root ball.

I have a 5ft tall Bald Cypress currently living in 9b of Northern California. What season do you recomend doing a trunk chop?
@BonsaiEn
@BonsaiEn 9 месяцев назад
Personally when I do it I allow them to have a first full flush in spring, I allow that harden off and give energy back to the tree then I do the chop mid to late spring. But that's here in Australia. If the tree was super healthy before it went dormant you could also do it in winter, just make sure to cover the wound.

How long would you leave the putty on the tree for????
@BonsaiEn
@BonsaiEn Год назад
The tree will push the putty off when it heals. Otherwise if it doesn't come off itself ( which it doesn't in some cases ) you can pull it off after a year and check the progress and re wound and re apply if needed. I usually allow a full growing season before checking the progress.

hey josh can i repot a swampy now beginning January.
@BonsaiEn
@BonsaiEn 7 месяцев назад
Wait till end of winter early spring. When ever the buds start to swell you do your repotting. You'll want to do it before the new foliage fully opens.
