Bald Explorer: An Abandoned Canal - The Shrewsbury and Newport Canal

The Shrewsbury and Newport Canals were once connected to the Shropshire Union Canal allowing coal and limestone to be brought out of Telford during the Industrial Revolution. Cheese and other products from Shrewsbury were exported across the country and overseas thanks to these important waterways. Sadly, in the mid twenthith century the canal fell into disuse like so many of the British navigations. However, the Shrewsbury and Newport Canals Trust are attempting to put the canals back into water. This is their story.

Thanks so much Michael. These longer format videos are very time consuming to make. I loved making them and there are about 8 like this on the channel. These days I make shorter less well made videos purely because the RU-vid algorithm prefers it and people will forget me if I spend three months each time I make a video. :)

Excellent, professional presentation. Informative, well scripted, very well filmed. When did the English succumb to the present day mindset of passively accepting all the rules and regulations that we increasingly have to endure ? ... Needing permission to launch a coracle on a stretch of water ! Don't even ask.. these people need to learn their place.

I carried out major repairs to the bridge at Woppenshall junction .We put a steel pins into each block that forms the arch ,then tied these off to girdle above the arch and then cast a concrete arch holding all the blocks in place across the bridge. This was done as the bridge had a large crack across it ,probably caused by the ground settling around the abutments once the water was cut off from beneath it .The works were done in the 1990 by Shropshire county council Highways Department .

Unfortunately these days most the monies made for the canals go on flashy events and high wages and pensions for upper management and the 6 directors. The canals are literally falling apart and have been for The last ten years. Most of the maintenance fell behind about 5 years before canal and river trust merged from Brittish waterways 5 years ago. 10 years ago the boaters were informed by BW that they had to not spend any money on the canals because the government were saying they wouldn't renew the 50 million pound a year grant which would end in 5 years. When the 5 years came and the grant was no longer BW changed its name to Canal and River Trust . BW was no more to look after the canals , however they did manage to build and open 20 brand new marinas that are called BWML British Waterway Marina Ltd ( funded by boater fees and grants that should have been spent on the canal system ) . CaRT began 5 years ago and still the canals are not being maintained and work is only carried out when it breaks. Most the engineers of BW were laid off to make way for sub contractors . Monies are wasted on flashy events, flashy company cars and overpaid CEO's. Us boaters love the canals and our lifestyle but it is forever threatened by those we pay our fees to. Locks along the system are in excellent condition where they advertise historical sites but the other 80% of the locks are a disgrace and difficult to operate and at least 30% are just dangerous. They are good at making a show ! Thankfully they had nothing to do with this one or they would of edited the boaters comment of them filling in the canals to prevent re- opening !! A lovely video

I came to this from a Time Team episode, and frankly can't find much difference in production quality. Well done you. Cheers from America.

Many thanks for making this video, top quality and very useful information. Really enjoyed watching this and as soon as covid restrictions allow I plan on exploring as much as I can. Many years I carried my kayak to a section of the canal not far from Haughmond and had a paddle around.

Another great informative vid! You know I love these teaching, historical ones (I guess documentary style)🤗👍👏 Could tell it was one of your older ones, but glad to see you finally got to ride (& at 1 point even drive) a narrow boat!

Brilliant! Such a Professional, Very informative and amazing production. Im amazed you have so many videos and such few subscriber's. Thats the problem with utube, there are 100's of thousands of videos all waiting to be found. Ive now subscribed and definitely will tell my friends about this channel. Great stuff. :)

Thanks so much - I made it a while a go - but it took forever and I can't spend that time making them like that without a proper budget sadly.
