00:12:40 We find another strange door with a bunch of stuff and another button to open another door which leads to another button/door and then a battle (of course)
00:24:16 Another door...which leads us to someone hiding: Philomeen
00:31:12 After a very tense conversation with Philomeen, she gives some runepowder that's supposed to blow up anything
00:35:02 We make our way back to the cave-in and use the runepowder to blow things up
00:36:28 Nere comes out of the cave and immediately starts killing the Drow!
00:38:46 We end up in a huge fight with Nere and his followers

To answer your question before getting too far into the episode (6 minutes in) Items marked in red mean that nearby friendly NPCs will be upset if you take them. "Pick Up" becomes "Steal", looting is treated as stealing, and depending on how angry the NPCs get they can either stop you from interacting with it, accuse you of stealing and let you return it, or send you off to jail (or just attack you) if you don't pass a check. Not everything you can do with something marked in red is always bad. For instance a book might let you Read it, but picking it up is still Stealing.

Perception checks are usually done when you pass near to something hidden. High wisdom will add a bonus to the check. If all the party fails then you won’t be shown what it is. If you succeed the game will highlight it but only for about 3 seconds so (annoyingly) you are best to quickly look around left and right so you actually see it. The thing will still be visible after the light show but won’t be highlighted. In the highest difficulty mode you won’t even see a message about failed perception checks since if you walk around in real life and don’t notice something then you wouldn’t even know there is anything to see.

Thank you so much for explaining this to me. The logic behind what they did makes since now but this old woman would miss a flashing neon sign with an arrow pointing at it. I'll try to be faster instead of whining about not being able to find stuff!

“Two hits. Not fair!” Martial classes such get an ability called Extra Attack at level 5. Lae’zel as a fighter has this ability and so can hit twice herself. Gale was hitting people with his staff in this fight but that’s not the best way to use him as his strength score is low. If his spell slots have all been used for the day he still has a cantrip called Fire Bolt (which doubled its power at level 5) which should be much more effective for him.

Thank you! I know I'm not using my people to THEIR best ability. I did the same thing playing Dragons Age: Original Sin. I eventually made it through and the story blew me away. That's another reason I wanted to play this. I am here for the story. You might not see me utilize people correctly but hopefully I'll get better and stronger to make it through the end.

Two significant things happened in this episode which I’ve never seen in my many play throughs of act 1. What fun! I can never bring myself to NOT intervene when Nere starts killing gnome slaves. It seems saying/doing nothing to stop a murderous psychopath might not be the best idea. 🙈 I died in that fight the first time I did it. There is a way to make it easier which you might do next time if you talk to certain people beforehand.

Sometimes, as in real life, if I don't know what my answer will result in, I say nothing. I did NOT want to get into a fight with Nere. I was absolutely stunned when he killed the gnome. I am sure my next playthroughs will be quite different. Slower, more thorough, and take a LOT longer.
