Im using 0 mods. Ye i think we cant see skeletons with alt. In Early Access you could move skeletons in one place to stack them and then explode them, but cant anymore in full game.
Thief or any other ranged should use hand xbows. Its becouse you can shot with them on bonus action. You can stick with them even to mid act 3, untill you find epic/legendary 2h weapon.
