I've always wanted to learn to play the guitar the way you do, but is there any way that I can do this without growing out my finger nails? Or is it a must?

The fingernails only affect the tone. I play without nail sometimes when I broke the nails and only took me a few hours to adjust to the feeling. It won't be as loud and bright but playing with fresh has its own charm.

The new guitar serves you well. The worst thing is that everyone seems to have played Baldur Gate by now and a lot of covers and arrangements are being made, and I still haven't played it.
