I used to share a table at an Italian restaurant in Battersea with Dominic. Once I asked him what he did for a living and he said he played the guitar and left it there. It wasn't until he offered me tickets to hear Sting at Albert Hall that, when I showed up, I realized that, yes he played the guitar (for Sting). That is how humble a person he is.

The harmonic is definitely easier but playing it means you're constrained to playing this in this specific key only; you can't transpose up or down. I'm guessing that is also why he chooses to play that A note on the 5th fret of the thickest string with his ring finger when he can just play an open A string.

Yes, its really nice of him to do this. BTW, if you like this sort of thing, James Taylor has put out a really detailed free video showing closeups of both hands playing "Carolina on my mind", and a bunch of others on how he does his nails, etc. Really great stuff from the artist himself. .

Genius man. The importance of practice slowly, precisely and focus on clean sound is everything. Most guitarists don't do that. They try to get faster and faster and the listener is not willing to follow and enjoy the music with it's sound melody.

I've played at playing guitar for 30 years. Only now as an adult have I really started to understand it musically. It is so deeply gratifying and encouraging to hear a true master speak about the writing process that I can identify with. Almost a little like Bob Ross, "Well that was a happy accident!" I have felt that compulsion to complete the circle so strong lately as I play, thank you sir for your insights! I have seen you perform live and it forever changed my perception of how the guitar enhances the music.

Dominic Miller's wise words and advice are such a welcome respite from this whole macho approach that wants the guitar a lethal weapon and not an instrument to touch the soul oh and his humbleness makes him even more endearing to boot (try not to be full of yourself after playing guitar with Sting for 1/3 of a century). Karl Popper once said scientists and artists were engaged in similar activities: problem solving. In both cases a flash of inspiration - the creative spark for the kernel of an idea or a theory of the physical world - is a primarily one of inspiration. Logic (both musical and experimental) then dictates whether that kernel is viable within the musical structure or consistent with the physical world. The way Dominic describes (and Sting as well, and how some Nobel laureate scientists describe grasping for an explanatory theory) the endeavor just reminds me of the whole Popperian approach to art and science.

"I love the whole process of composing." "Really the way it starts is you get a little bit of luck, or just a little riff might just fall on my fingers or just the combination between two chords ... I've got to work on that and solve it." "I've immediately got something that's worth working on and worth solving." "It's my responsibility as a composer as a writer as a guitarist ... is to do something with it and take it to its conclusion, and that can take a long time ... but I want to make it sound ... like all the chords fell on each other." "First of all - recognize when you have a good idea, which is not that easy." "Something might have passed by, and if there was someone else in the room, they'd go, 'What's that?' So you've got to know when you have these little moments of luck. And then what need to do is cease the moment, and work on it." - Dominic Miller I also loved the analogy of a good architect that knows a lot of engineering (as opposed to simply "fashion"). "And composing music is no different really. So I need to allow the piece music to hold together to stand up and have some strength and power and for it to last." - Dominic One of the best music composition lessons I've ever had. Great warm up exercises and Bach - hitting each note so that we're getting the right sound. The sound has to be right. Thanks for sharing, Dominic!
