It's been a long time since Tama got hooked on a good RPG adventure, but then Baldur's Gate 3 happened. As a newcomer to the series but a big fan of solo roleplay experiences, she gave this game a try as a ranger and fell in love... in more ways than one! Thanks to the charming characters, the roleplay prioritizing systems, and the emphasis placed on player choice, this just might be the best RPG ever made. We have finally been fed. This video only includes footage of act 1 and only one reference to a specific event in act 1 so it should be relatively spoiler free.
Special thanks to Vidit for providing ALL of the game footage for this video so you don't have to look at my potato quality Steamdeck stuff.
I don't usually talk about modern games I love, but here's the last time I did - • Pokémon Scarlet and Vi...

SPOILER NOTICE: This video to the best of my ability is free of plot spoilers. It ONLY uses footage from Act 1 (very early game) and the only specific events referenced are also in Act 1. However what is and is not a spoiler is not always clear cut, so please use your own discretion. This video does show many characters that are introduced throughout Act 1 so if that is something you don't want to know yet, wait to watch this video until you have finished Act 1. For most people these should not be significant game ruining things to know before going in, but different people have different thresholds for these things.

speaking of that critical spoiler... sometimes you can trust your companions to do the right thing on their own. the approval system is clearly more complex than "kiss their ass for heart points", which is just another amazing thing the devs managed to pull off.

I love being able to see your unbridled joy in gushing about this game. As you said, a rarity in today’s gaming landscape. It is truly a game you can sink a multitude of playthroughs into, and with how Larian Studios has been updating it, I can easily see you returning to this topic years from now to see where you’ve landed on this game with your tried and true “retrospective” glasses on. ❤

It's seriously a special game that puts most AAA titles to shame. I was truly stunned by how often the game acknowledged what I'd done and how I'd gone about it, or even who I am. The fact that a dozen hours in I was still being actively reminded and rewarded for having made a bard tiefling felt amazing.

BG3 captivated me and made me feel like the game actually cared about my choices like no other game has since Fallout: New Vegas. And they are still improving on it based on player feedback!

A note to anyone playing this game for the first time, quick save often and do NOT feel bad for save scumming. There are plenty of moments like what Tama here mentioned above where you could have +15 or even +20 to a roll only to get hit with a one which is an automatic fail no matter what your bonuses are and they can and will happen at absolutely critical plot moments. If you want a 100% pure no re-roll campaign(aside from inspiration of course) there's always Honor mode, though I have found a way around that one too, but that should be saved for after your first playthrough anyway imo. One's are going to happen and it's one thing if it's on a random perception check but it's entirely another when it might mean the permanent fate of a companion you've just spent dozens, if not over a hundred hours getting invested in. There should be no guilt involved when the system is designed in such a way and I'm sure that's why they made the quicksave/reload system so fast and easy to use.

They also made and published a bunch of other games, but considering what you were talking about in terms of RPGs you enjoyed, I thought this was a weird connection that might interest you.

While I haven't yet dove into the game myself, I admire just for all the joy and positivity it's brought so many people. I had a sort of similar experience before 2017, thinking maybe I was just caught up in nostalgia and that's why most modern games didn't grab me, but then I found Xenoblade 2, and it was so invigorating to just truly fall in love with a game again. I hope more people can find their special game to help them fall in love with the hobby all over again. I really need to play this LOL xD

I felt the same way about it being a dream game based on personal fantasy! The only thing missing is a more detailed character creator! I almost wrote it off because of the combat… now I’m trying more similar games with that kind of combat because now I’m experienced with it. They even put a light haired morally ambiguous british vampire you can date, and made it so depending on your choices he’s both sides of what people like in that niche.

One of my favourite moments in gaming entirely comes from BG3, and it's something most people wouldn't even think of at first. Avoiding spoilers, you'd need to be kind of a --monster-- free thinker to have a shot at it, which culls the majority of players. Then, you have to actively seek out one particular party option and befriend them (which again, isn't super easy, given the actions you need to take). Finally, they'll open up and have this heart-wrenching monologue about how in another life, they'd have been a random enemy to you. You'd have encountered them early on, slain them, and moved on without thinking. "Nobody would remember me," they say, and it's _true._ For most players, they'll never even know this character is possible to recruit. You're rewarded for --committing atrocities-- thinking outside the box and pursuing the road less traveled. The game recognises you, and not only accomodates your --murderous rampage-- creative thinking, but says to your face, "good job." It's reminiscent of Dragon Age: Origins, where even --violent psychopaths-- imaginative knife enthusiasts can have their moments in the sun. Any game with the depth to allow the protagonist to be outright _evil_ and not just a jerk hero (like the later Dragon Age entries 😪) deserves admiration. AND THAT'S JUST ONE FACET OF BG3!!! Btw, your hair looks amaaaziiing~!! I wish I could pull off highlights like that, but some people (me) aren't gifted like that aaaaaaaaaaa 😭

Your taste in games seem to be impeccable Tama. While not as much as you prolly, my taste in RPGs (my favorite genre) is quite refined & specific. What I look for as story, gameplay, characters, length, & world. VERY few have matched these entire criteria. But to hear your take on modern gaming is completely fair. But with this year flooded with some many great RPGs already, I think you should give'em a try.

Even though most RPGs where you choose an "evil" side or route or path seem to retcon their evilness half-way through by either introducing a greater evil or revealing "the true enemy" and even though you can play a good guy as The Dark Urge in Baldur's Gate 3, the stuff the narrator says and the kinds of answers you can give exclusively as that character truly make you feel like a villain. For the most part. The rest of the time you're some sort of murderhobo, the dream of every DnD player ever according to the internet.

I'm in the same boat as you Tama; modern gaming has, for the most part, completely lost me. The few modern games with all the current problems that plague today's development teams that I entertain are the online multi-player games I got to play with my friends first, then continued to play by myself as well (Dead By Daylight, Overwatch) but then....both these games are in their, like, 8th years in existing so....are they even that modern anymore? Lol; if I'm getting into a game or franchise these days it's an old one that I'm simply getting around to now, like Final Fantasy & Princess Maker (shout out to your video on pm2! ❤) I've been interested in Baldurs Gate 3, but was wary that a modern day Triple A title could truly offer something that can give me an experience akin to Skyrim or Pokemon Crystal. Something deep & stimulating for my imagination. But once I saw you fall for this game, I knew there had to be something to it. I trust your judgment 1000%! I definitely want to give this game a shot later down the line once I make room for it & finish playing my current playthoughs of Ps1/Ps2 rpgs 💜

This game has got me reevaluating every CRPG I’ve ever played. I found out that I had accepted a bunch of limitations that I thought were inherent in the medium. The limitations weren’t inherent. They were choices the developers made and it was possible to do better. And I’m not talking about the visuals, I’m talking about the story and role play elements. It isn’t technological restrictions that caused what I now perceive to be flaws in games that are not BG3. If this game does not revolutionize the genre, I will be very disappointed.

It's essentially just D&D 5E turn-based combat. Start of combat all combatants roll initiative to decide the order in which turns go, and during your turn you can move, take an Action and a Bonus Action. You get to directly control all of your party members, while any unrelated allies are computer-controlled like the enemies are. Overall it's very fun but sometimes minor things can make it frustrating (being unable to cancel your movement is the big one).

Trying to play Starfield a month after BG3 released felt wrong on every level. You just can't get away with shallow illusions when there are games with actual depth. That is not to say you can't make a good RPGs if you don't make them as sprawling as BG3, just that you can't trick people into thinking your game has scope and meaningful choices when it doesn't. You couldn't release Skyrim in 2024, although I am sure they will.

It's really unfortunate that every recommendation that could possibly be given that check all the boxes of things you love in BG3 come with a big asterisk of "Will have way too much really mediocre combat". Like Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous, Baldur's Gate 2, Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect, Vampire the Masquerade, and even New Vegas all kind of have the same core issue. DA:O is basically the blueprint for what this game is, but it's got two huge chunks in it that make it so hard to recommend. Disco Elysium is basically the only exception

I personally really enjoy the BG3 combat, but I am used to turn based systems. I think there's enough variety among all the different classes that the base system really gives you a lot of flexibility in how you approach things. I'm playing a non-damage character for my 2nd run and am having to really think through each move carefully. To me, something that lets me do that AND provides multiple different ways to strategize is really all I'm looking for. You can do some really fun things with builds.

It's a different kind of cutting corners because they don't trust the source material to be popular enough and yet still want to make a game using that source material. In regards to your comments about playing with friends though... I tried playing with a group of friends and the whole game just fell apart. My one friend felt that it wasn't worth playing unless he could guarantee we'd have the best gear available at all times, so once we were all done buying and selling he would pickpocket the merchant for all his/her gold. Meanwhile I'm trying to play a lawful good cleric but there's no way to punish him for his evil deeds unless I want to become evil myself and just kill all the merchants. My other friend would respec his entire character every other session because he would get bored, so we'd never actually know what his character could do. And the worst part, my friends had all played before so while I was engaging in a cutscene, they would re-arrange the area and reposition so that they could cheese the upcoming combat, the moment it begins. So I fully agree with solo play ONLY. People who aren't me are 100% awful. I'll still take the original 2 games any day over this one.

I get it, but I don't wanna play BG3 lol, I already have too many giant RPGS in my backlog. I have to finish my food (Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2, currently). Not to mention I didn't care for Larian's last 2 Divinity games. Maybe in a few years I'll give it a shot.

This game got regular ass people to play crpg without compromising anything. People who likely wouldn’t care for Divinity OS1 and OS2. Take your time with your food. It’s exactly me having so many games is why I am going to be missing Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Dragon’s Dogma II for a long while.

I miss the good old days of this channel talking about just Pokemon. And the views seem to reflect that 😅
