I looked and noticed I was missing 80%-ish of my gold. I just restarted I was so irate. I was saving gold for a long time to kit everyone out with nice gear once I hit BG and beregost. It wassomething like 70k lost. Never again lol.
Really good video! You didn't go over shorty saving throws! For those of you wondering at 18+ CON if you are a Dwarf, Halfling or Gnome you will get +5 (which is max) to the saving throws listed on the race selection screen. So even if you are not a "Warrior" class, max CON is still important-ish. (14-17 CON will still get you +4 to said rolls) So if you would still rather put 2 more points into CON instead of something else that will not boost any other vital stats for your class, as a "Shorty" you get an extra +1 to your saving throws.
@@everythingpony 103 is a higher than 17 average. Nothing is impossible, but without proof, I'm definitely NOT believing this one. Friends and I have literally played hundreds and hundreds of hours and the highest anyone has ever rolled is a 96 like mentioned above. Max could be higher, but definitely not 103. A 17 average.... nope.
Bard is more like a thief / sorcerer type deal. You didn't click Dragon Disciple to show that off. Fun fact: Your alignment also affects your starting reputation. Good guys will start off popular, while evil guys will start off with people not liking them very much.
Great video, I've never really sunk my teeth into an old school RPG like this (I played about an hour of it but never finished) so I'm definitely going to make good use this guide when I play this game again.

I've played this game a lot (1000hrs so far) and a elf fighter/mage (true neutral alignment so he can eventually wear the robes of the neutral archmagi) with 92 points total for attributes to start with (current character has str 18-94, dex 19, con17, int 18, wis 10, cha 10, I reroll until I get the attributes I want ) is by far the best protagonist. I like to dual wield flails or longswords (played through with both choices) and I wear ankheg plate (which disables my spells but at low levels who cares as you aren't much of a spell caster anyway) until I can afford the robes of neutral archmagi.
For Baldur's Gate 2, it can be dangerous to lower the intelligence of your frontline fighters. When you run into the mind flayers, their melee attack can drain intelligence, i believe its 5 for each hit, so I try to have 11 for my fighters if possible, takes three hits to kill them that way. From the intelligence drain atleast.
Just a few things regarding the attributes: Dex is the same from 7 to 14, and iirc you said 6 (minor difference) Cha of 8 or above makes sure that if nothing else affects the roll, you cannot get a hostile reaction (the other possible are neutral and friendly reactions) Otherwise an incredibly informative video, there's a lot of stuff about the mechanics that never really become obvious no matter how many times you play it. Good to know that the new players have somewhere to turn for info.
The game is light as it can get. 2 gbs of space, and can run in almost any machine. SOME graphical chipsets have problems with it, but there are solutions on the forums. Both games (BG1 and BG2) are 80+ hours of gameplay and GOD DAMN FUN to play, are masterfully written and have set the standard quality-o-meter for all modern rpgs, including Dragon Age (once acclaimed to be BG2 spiritual successor by Bioware).
I've also noticed this version looks different than the more recently uploaded version, did they edit the enhanced edition since this video, to add the skill bonuses for the races and changes to the fonts and window brightness?
I don't see any reason to pick anything because there is no explanation on how to use just about anything in this game. I couldn't even get past one of the tutorial screens because it didn't explain how to do what it asked. I finally had to press ALT F4 to close the game. I uninstalled and sold it because the game is such shit.

Half elves can multi class for things that an elf can't. Just one more example of Quill not knowing wtf he's talking about. If you want a multiclass druid, you ARE playing a half elf. Extra embarrassing considering Jaziera (a main character in the game) is literally based around this mechanic. Love the man, but he shouldn't be allowed to teach ANYTHING, since he just can't help himself from spreading misinformation, or just outright making things up to give the air of knowing what he's talking about.

Quill, you forgot that shorty saves are con based. so if your a caster or a thief who is either a gnome, or a dwarf or a halfling, it is worthwhile to get you con up to 18 which gives you that max save bonus.
I know your schedule is insano mode right now but... please do a Let's Play of this! I played BG2 and Icewind Dale, Neverwinter, Planescape: Torment and pretty much all the other classics, but I never managed to actually play the original and would love to be able to just chill on the couch and watch you cruise through the story. :D
So I stumbled upon your channel because you played SimCity 5 , which I do too! Then I came across your development channel and found out you are a C# developer like me. Now I see you do D&D, which is freaking awesome!! This one BG1 was my first RPG which I played for hours!!! Don't tell me you like to watch Die Hard movies as well.... :D lol
Are there big differences between the normal BG1 and the EE BG1? I already own BG1 but not the EE edition. Is it really worth the money to upgrade to EE?
A few questions Quill (Or anyone else, and don't worry, I'm capable of typing words into a search engine, I just figured these would be common questions that other people would ask, plus I'd like to hear *your* personal view) - 1) What total roll would you recommend stopping at, and how much does it matter later in the game? i.e. if I'm someone who hates messing up characters and being able to undo it, if I choose say 82 points will I notice the difference to say 88 much or do you cap out pretty much the same regardless? 2) What class would you recommend to get the most enjoyment out of your first playthrough based on your own past experiences? I know with NWN the enjoyment you got out of the original campaign was vastly dependent on what role you chose since some classes just didn't get utilised to their full potential in the base story, I'm curious if BG is similar. 3) Not really a question but I'd love to see you do an LP of Arcanum. It's the one RPG other than the Elder Scrolls games I can just go back to and replay over and over because it's so open ended in what you can do/be, plus if you like the kind of freedom you get in creating your character in D&D you'll seriously love the system Arcanum uses, I've probably made like 50-60 completely unique builds/characters and not covered half the stuff you can do. (Plus it's top-down isometric like BG with a fun party of followers you can obtain throughout the game depending on if they like you or not/what kind of person you are/if you agree to help them etc. The closest game I've played to it would be Divinity - Original Sin, but I prefer the setting of Arcanum, and the combat in Divinity)
JesusGreenBL I would not play a fighter in this game, if your character die's it's game over unlike your friends who can be revived. Play a pure archer or a mage. Archer is better because there's less micro, and your probably going to have Jaheira for the summons/revives and then another mage like Nerra or Aerie (I recommend Nerra there's less character interactions but a better romance.) If you play pure mage then be a wild mage it's a lot more fun. you should ether keep Jaheira or veronica. Veronica has a cool romance path but Jaheira is he obvios choice early on, cus she has awesome summons (Veronica Is better later on when you get the hang of things like immunity spells). (if you go duel class for a cleric/summoner then you can pick up Neera or Aerie) """"there is a editor you can use later on if you want to change."""" Also pro tip do the umir hills quest early on. it's tough but awesome for xp and you have to go there later anyway + you get one of the most relaxing keeps in the game. you can also do the unseeing eye since you get a really amazing fighter from it. pro, pro tip, grab those gloves of dexterity.
+JesusGreenBL minimum I accept is 92, with 99 being the best I have rolled. This gives you (92)18(xx) str, 18 dex, 18 con and 18 int, 10 in wis and cha. Any 'extra' points over 92 always goes to cha (to reduce store costs),I always play 1/2 elf fighter/mage multi class, as they are potentially the most powerful class by the end of Throne of Bhaal. It takes a few hours of mindless rerolling but if you think about the hours you are going to invest in playing it is not that bad. I will add as well I dual wield, flails (for the flail of ages in SOA), but am going long swords right now, as there are few nice flails in Baldurs Gate but a couple of nice long swords (will go with flails eventually so when I go into SOA I am ready for the Flail of Ages)
+JesusGreenBL I should have added you should take into account the tomes available in Buldurs Gate. I have just finished BG 1 with an elf fighter/mage/thief and the base stat roll was 91 (Str 18[97] Dex 19 Con 17 Int 18 Wis 9 Cha 10) and at the finish of BG1 (just coming out of the CandleKeep catacombs) my Elf now has Str 19 Dex 20 Con 18 Int 19 Wis 12 Cha 11. By the end of SOA(in hell, taking some evil and some good picks and changing my alignment to evil)/Throne of Bhaal (Lum the Mad Machine) I will have something like Str 22 Dex 21 Con 21 Int 20 Wis 12 Cha 12
Like your vids quill18.I played pen paper D&D i remember savings throws were based off certain stats.Does the game do the same? If does dropping stats to lowest would be a bad idea.Like dropping your int on a warrior sounds good until you fail a save vs illusions dex for balance checks con for poison saves ect.I'm so buying this now after watching your vid i got a serious nostalgia vibe (still haz me dice!) plus many positive reviews saying this is best pc rpg ever made.
Hey man, really good video, the only thing you didn't go over stat wise was how it affected saving throws. Are they really significant in BG:EE or is it another you can just ignore?
Is the game very big? I have a pretty bad computer right now but i reeeeeaally want to play something, more specifically i wanted to play Dragon Age Origins but it got pretty laggy so I'm trying to find something else to play. Do you think there's a chance that I'll be able to play this game?
I freakin love Baulder's Gate! Especially since I read books that coincide with the games :) I was always better at the Icewindale games though, I created the most powerful characters I could over multiple playthroughs :3
Yes, if you're going to dual class later you will need a 15 or higher in your primary stats of your original class; and a 17 or higher for the primary stats of the second class. Makes something like a good Fighter -> Druid a tough roll.
I have a question for you. in your experiance is that confusion spell (that was in baldurs gate 2) in the enhanced edition? i recall magics bieng unforgiving in baldurs gate 2 shadows of amn, but never played the first game. But i do remember a confusion spell bieng a game ender as you'd get hit by it than shortly afterwards run into combat as you cant control your character than be slain... i also remember bieng turned to stone and smashed xD
I hope that they will release a Baldur's Gate 2 EE with Throne of Bhaal Included. Also would like an EE of both of the Icewind Dale games. The Neverwinter franchise is getting picked up as a Free to Play MMO so I am looking forward to that.
If I am not mistaken, is it not wise to have a few surplus points in the mental stats if possible for protection reasons? I seem to recall some spells needing to beat a roll against a targets stat in order to go through making a fighting type with next to nil mental capacity a super vulnerable target for such things.

actually sorcerers are not based on any stat at the moment. you can play a sorcerer with 9 intelligence and can cast up tu lvl 9 spells. at the moment, for a sorcerer, inteeligence is a dump stat.
It's funny to hear you talk about how outdated the character gen is... I never played anything past 2nd edition, so this is how I remember the game. LOL
I just bought this game today on the steam sale and for some reason all the Chaotic alignments are grayed out for me no matter what character i choose, do you have any idea what may be wrong?
you need an 18 dexterity as a fighter, in 2 E rules you don't have penalties for wearing armour and also they get killed alot even at 15 DEX in full armour. I try and roll my fighers/paladins ect to at least 18 in all physical nice to get an 18/91-00 but that is hard as Hell. if you take the Knoll strong hold at level 1-3 and get crappy luck on hit rolls or HP per level rolls, you will be in for a night of reloads if you are anything less than 18 in all phsyical stats as a fighter class(except ranger-who is a ranged attacker) your main PC dies, that's it, reload time, it is not like Icewind Dale. rumor states that low intelligence affects pathfinding AI, but I think it is a lie, the node can be set to 32000(in original BG-haven't got EE so don't know if it is settable.) and less of an effect. haven't tried it with a 3.
It's not really worth it if you already have the old games and know how to install TUTU. Well perhaps except for the 3? new henchmen you can bring along, which Beamdog created from scratch to show off some of the new kits (such as a wild mage)

Specialist mages are defined by what they *can't* cast rather than by their specialty. Weapon mastery arguably peaks at Master (3 proficiency). Going up to High or Grand Master is rarely worth it. You're better off spending those extra proficiencies in a back-up weapon.
It's the same world, Faerun. And the same coastal region as well (The Sword Coast). You can't visit the "other" place in either game though. Too far away from each other. That means same lore, gods and so forth though. :)
The consequences are only for palladins and rangers if they stray from the path of Good they loose a LOT of benefits, other than that little to no impact. And monks are awesome!
Not really - The rules are very different from any of the modern editions (Video games or pen and paper). You'd probably want to start out with something like Neverwinter Nights 1 for an introduction to everything D&D. And then if you like it, either continue with its expansion packs, then NWN2 or go back to the roots with Baldurs Gate (And note that BG uses an older system with very different rules)
just about to start Baldurs Gate 1, never played them so trying to figure out what is the best class to go and what stats to pick atm. Any ideas from anyone is much appreciated!
There are no new graphics - it's all about giving the player a stable HD version of the game that runs as intended on never systems. You can achieve similar things with the old GOG bundle and TUTU - but you'd miss out on some awesome new henchmen.
I just started playing Baldur's gate 2 as a Wild Mage and ended up blowing up half my party and turning myself into a dog when one of my fireball spells backfired during the shade lord questline. I was worried I might get stuck as a dog for the remainder of the game but fortunately it's only temporary.... but I've heard that if you accidently do a sex change wild surge as a wild mage it's permanent
I need help. So if I were to dual class a Wizard/Thief then does the sum of the level in both classes determine your true level? So if I am level 10 in the Wizard tree and level 11 in the Thief skill then am I level 21? Also if I multiclass Wizard/Thief then is the sum my level so if I am level 10/10 am I actually level 20 or level 10? I want to get the awesome perks of the Thief like the backstab, but I don't want to opt out of level 9 spells.
elves aren't broken in this game, humans are the ones that are broken, duel classing breaks the game apart, a kensai thief with use any item ability is really broken, kesai mages are pretty broken aswell, but of course they won't become good until high levels, plus blunt weapons are some the best weapons in BG2 (crom faeyer, flail of ages)
The updates helped a lot on the graphical matters, and actually, a shittier computer runs BGee way better than a top notch pc with best graphic engines because of OLD.
