Hey Petko, I have quite a few balfouris and I have had two succesful eggsacks so far. From the research I did, I learned that it is strongly advised to leave the babies with their mom for at least 6 months, because she will feed them and they will have a significantly lower chance of survival if you separate them from their mom. However, I have also separated the babies from one mom as she did not take care of them and added them to the other mom with babies, and she took care of all of them. Also, when they were bigger, I added the slings to my balfouri communal setup and there, the bigger balfouris shared their food with the slings. So, my recommendation: Don't leave the babies on their own, have some older balfouris help them!
@drshin9893
@drshin9893 Год назад
You realize “taking care” of them is leaving scraps of dead food… pretty sure he can do that just as well. Every Balfour sling I’ve raised was the size he pulled and survived ALONE, so it’s gonna be fine

Sweet! Check further info, as from what I know mother will share her meal with her babies feeding them, and they grow better left with mother, which is quite unique for T's.

I had a group of 5 monocentropus balfouri. After 3 years, I gave 4 away, because it was 4 males. 1 female left. And 3 weeks ago I saw, that she create a cocon. Thats my first time, after 20 years of having spiders, that I run into a new expirience and I very happy of this. I hope I will have a success and healthy spiderlinge.

Hey Petko, for slings I would recommend a pooter, the little suction devices used to catch insects. I tend to have a bit of tissue at the bottom just to protect them and then just suck them all up.

Video idea: How strong is tarantula web? I dont know if it will fit on this Channel but i would like to see an experiment when you will collect a lot of tarantula web and form it into a thick string and see how strong it actually is! Scientists say that spider web is stronger than stainless Steel wich is impressive. You could Put some of these balfouris as workers inside an enclosure with solid strong anchor points So you will be able to easily collect all the web out. I think nobody has done that yet.

Great video! Love watching you love the hobby. A small bit of advice for the unhatched eggs. If you have eggs that look good but are unhatched put them in a seperate enclosure for a week or two. They just might take longer to hatch. Part of a survival strategy. Thanks again.

I'm assuming you're using one? And it's not too aggressive on the delicate slings? Just asking because I've never thought of that but that is a great idea and I'll def have to get one

@@jacks559 entomologists use them in the field to collect delicate, winged and otherwise too small to mechanically handle specimens. They have such low mass to size ratio that it’s very hard to damage them without direct force. Yes I’ve used them to collect ants and fruit flies before. Quite easy to make from simple items.

I was just wondering, if you consider how good Balfouri are at being communal why is it necessary to separate the slings from the mother at all until much later, say when you're planning on breeding them again.

Hi Petko, i love how much you love them and how excited you are. Thats what keeps me coming back every video. I was wondering if the different stages of the slings/babies is an overall indicator of their health?. Or are they like humans even those of the same age can be vastly different. Thanks.
