We arrived in Bali and Monika picked the bike. A full apartment tour, the costs of life in Bali and we rode over to a spot for lunch (including some fairly crazy traffic!).

I love Bali, i have been there twice and also rented a Motorbike. You mentioned the International Drivers Licence in your last Video, it is not that useless. There was Police at the side of the road in Bali and they pulled us over. When i got my international Drivers licence out, they immediatly said we should move on, without even taking a look at it.

Oh my! I was in Bali for 2 weeks over Christmas and NYE and this makes me miss how amazing this place is! I stayed between Ubud and Amed so didn't check out the busier areas of the south. Also got badly injured while riding a bike so had to get stiches and doctors to visit me every 2 days. Flew back to Singapore to have scans etc after my time in Bali was over but I still had an absolutely amazing time! Enjoy!

South East Asian rider here. You may want to consider switching to a "maxi-scooter" such as those NMAX you saw or the Honda PCX160, for an upgrade in roominess, plusher suspension and more grunt for 2 up riding.

The Scoopy is a great bike, tons of fun. I know it might seem easy to ride with flip flops on, especially with a step through like the Scoopy, but I would say shoes and gloves are the most important gear to wear. a good friend of mine is missing three toes on his right foot as a result of a fairly low speed crash while riding with flip flops in Phuket. Just something to keep in mind. Cheers.

The funny thing is, I bet almost all of the people in the touristy area have no formal bike training. It’s a madness that somehow works. Very aggressive, but never ride, with no anger at all. I haven’t seen any crashes… so far! Thank you so much for being kind enough to follow the channel- it’s hugely appreciated!🙂

P.Smith: I'm a Brit. who comes to Bali every year, usually for two months, this time still here after three! During Covid due to no flights in or out, I got stuck here, for 5 months. Lucky me! I love Bali, but most of all, I love the Balanese, always friendly, ready to say "hello" with a big happy smile. Freddie's video was beautifully filmed. He did a really good job. There's a place for all types of people on Bali. Canggu is an 'in' place for the 18 to 30s; Nusa Dua has by far the best beach on the island. It has fabulous hotels & some lovely houses to rent at a similar price to Freddie & Monika's one room! In my opinion it's the best place for families,older people & those who enjoy something a bit quieter. Ubud is the place for those who want culture & art & for those that like living in spectacular forrest/jungle areas, the top of the island is great, the best tiered Paddy fields are around the Tabanan region. Kuta is a busy, noisy town, best for those who like hectic, party nightlife. Freddie is 100% correct regarding the Honda Scoopy. I'm a great fan & use one regularly, they're terrific. (pillion seats a bit hard though.). I have seen police stop riders for not wearing helmets, so be warned! Due to incredibly heavy traffic, the fumes can be bad, but electric scooters are now being seen on the roads. Well done Freddie & Monika!

Freddie, I'm from Portugal but moved to the Netherlands some 15 years ago. I remember Dutch bikers commenting on the Portuguese riding, in Portugal, with t-shirt only: "they are crazy", etc. 15 years later and with global warming going full speed ahead, summers here are significantly hotter than back then. Guess what? Dutch people riding with t-shirt only _everywhere_ around here now! Haters gonna hate...

One of my motorcycles is a 2004 reg 125 cc Honda Innova 9-3 HP auto clutch 4 speed step thru cub type motorcycle . Also known as Honda waves ,in the far east built in Thailand . I have never had a Honda or Suzuki machine break down on me in around 50 years of motorcycling . The small step thru motorcycles & twist & rip scooters are ideal , for nipping about tropical resorts & small islands in casual summer attire at relaxed speeds ,it’s no more risky than somebody in Lycra riding a push bike . When in Rome do as the locals do 👍

My woman has a Scoopy. Surprisingly nippy. Cost: 1100 GBP new in Thailand. I have a Yamaha Aerox 155 as my everyday transport. Same engine as the N-Max. I wear a light mesh jacket, mesh gloves and mesh boots. Roof Boxer V8 helmet. 900 GBP per month sounds a lot for the digs. We've got a banana tree in our garden. Didn't half grow fast. Expensive coffee. Great coffee for a quid here. It all sounds rather expensive compared to Thailand. For example, Saturday night we had three big dishes between us, a still water and a fizzy water in an upmarket restaurant for 11 GBP. We are right up north, though.

Honestly... Love your videos, but some of the places you go, it is yuppie middle-class suburbanite vacation destinations. Get in the weeds dude. Safety is also about comfort. If you wear all the gear for safety and you are too hot and uncomfortable then you won't be able to concentrate. Some riders won't ride unless they wear an airbag jacket but in 30C ? No thanks , a light mesh jacket will do nicely.

Bieng a lifeling biker, I usually dress for the slide, not the ride, but it is so unbelievably hot out on the road, it's trainers, shorts, a T shirt, and an open face helmet two sizes too big. its the only way!

Reminds me to my teenager days spending the summer with my grandparents at their village. I was riding locally around the village in a 50cc mopped, no helmet, shorts and flip flops. And those are my best memories, pure freedom, no stress no responsibilities. Sometimes you have compromise safety a bit in order to enjoy life! Official figures show that 1,200 people a year are killed on bikes on Bali, about 6,000 serious injuries a year. Whereas protective gear is a personal choice, you need to check your travel insurance and make sure you are covered for motorcycle use. I see many just giving campaigns to help repatriate severely injured foreigners who found they had no insurance, particular here in Thailand

Four years ago it was completely filthy- the beaches were covered in rubbish! But now it’s cleaner and the beaches have all had deep cleans- it’s was better! I think a lot of the time it’s the tourists orchestrating the big cleans. You’re right; there seems to be microscopic government presence here to steer the ship and get things done

You're absolutely right about the motorbike being the only way to get around there. I was lucky enough to be over there over the Christmas period and because we were in a larger group we had to get round in taxi. The waits in traffic was agony, crawling along and watching the bikes whizz by - darting in and out of traffic and footpaths! Had to cut travel time by 4x at least! What a place! Great video Freddie, did you say £500 or £900 for the apartment? On the point of safety gear, I have cycled all my life and have fallen off at 10mph/15mph, hitting tarmac at that speed hurts! I have grazed my ankles, hips, and hands. Best advice is to wear boots that cover the ankles and gloves with a helmet really. However, in hot humid conditions follow the local customs!

Excellent Sunday morning vlog as ever from you both. Seeing this video Bali isn't what I expected it to be, 40% down on normal tourist numbers and it's just so busy with the roads crammed with scooter riders, great experience though for sure. If there's one thing that irritates me is when I read or hear about any incident on our news is when they describe scooters as mopeds, grrrr, mopeds were partially powered by pedals, yes I know terms have moved on and I suppose the younger generation simply don't know the origin of the term moped. Anyway I digress, apartment looks great and I like Monika's choice of helmet and Freddie don't feel too guilty about the scooter in your last vlog, time is a great healer. Ha! Ha! Ride safe.

Thanks Lee🙂 It must be a generational thing because I think most people under 40 would have no idea of the origin of the word “moped”😳 My classmates cool enough to get a 50 or 125cc scooter at 16/17 would all call them mopeds (“peds” for short). I had no idea what a moped was until a week ago. I realise that this is a bit ridiculous of me

I was in Bali during schoolies one year (sort of like Australian spring break for school leavers) It was absolutely wild, it was about 10 years ago and the mullet was everywhere then too. The whole place was full of the dregs of society getting wrecked and abusing the locals.

Vario and Scoopy are better than those larger size motorbikes bcos: narrow roads! Can’t even understand why are they selling larger size bikes with narrow roads Bali / Indonesia has. Authentic INK and KYT helmet brands are the safest and affordable in Indonesia, but be careful bcos helmet thieves would target those brands 😆

I rode like that back in the 90's in Thailand. No gear, no fear. Then I spent a while looking after a kid who came off there. His family had to raise £25k to pay for his treatment and medivac back to the UK. A bit of body armour and some boots would be my choice when I next do it. BUT.... insurance people... Don't scrimp if your family can't pay for you to be brought home.

Just got back from spending a couple of days in London. Westminster area. Scooters outnumbered motorcycles by far! I like my bike but a scooter is much more practical in a high traffic environment

Lovely, though I think I'd end up being a hood ornament in a jiffy. Monika good choice on the bike . Safety gear for me especially with wrong side of the road protocol, but then it would be Roast Desmond Bali Style ew.

I flinch when I see your toes! As much as I hate the look of Crocs at least they would make your toes less vulnerable. As for the “moped” comments, I blame politicians. Half the states in the US have a set of moped laws that are actually referring to a scooter. A MOtor and PEDals are what make it a moped. That place is beautiful!

Safety gear - everyone makes their own choice but even training shoes are better than flip flops (although it looks as if the maximum speed is around 20 mph)! Can't believe how economical it is to stay there.

Bikes there in Indonesia are a lot like here in Philippines. So many scooters, so many moped,. I think not wearing proper gear while riding a bike here in South East Asia is not so big deal at all. I mean, it's natural for us (Filipino) to only wear helmet, shorts, tshirt and flipflops, especially when we only ride a few kilometers just to do quick errands or buy something then back home. But yeah, considering the condition of the road(so small), there are quite few riders drive so fast and so close to other vehicles so u have to be careful on that. for me, u can just wear any simple jacket, pants and shoes. The chosen bike is good actually, the honda scoopy it's small, easy to ride, light and fast. No problems at all since that bike is much a like the other yamaha scooters such as Mio and Nmax. Anyway, have fun on your adventures both. take care always

Yes they still have. The increase for 250cc-400cc is 40% and above 400cc is like 60-70%. You can even estimate the price from ferry ticket because the price difference for big bike is ridiculous😂
