The first in a series of videos covering the Dwarves of Thorin’s Company. Today, we cover brothers Balin and Dwalin from Balin's birth prior to Smaug's attack on Erebor to Dwalin's potential participation in the Battle of Dale and Balin's expedition to Moria. My hope is that this series will help enrich our enjoyment of these characters in The Hobbit Trilogy.

Balin was my favourite dwarf in the Hobbit and he was well portrayed in the films, what I liked about him is that he was a decent guy with a good head on his shoulders, was willing to call Thorin on his shit, was friends with Bilbo and stood up for Bilbo whenever Thorin was being an arsehole to him (Which was basically half the time).

I feel like not enough people give Dwalin credit for how good he is because he was the first of the Dwarves to stand up against corrupted Thorin and was possibly even the turning point of Thorin going back to his normal personality and also he blocked Ori when he thought Bard was trying to kill them.

This tale struck me especially hard, only because I just learned that a childhood friend in Chicago, passed away yesterday. He was best friends with my younger brother, Frankie, who passed away when he was 12. We were Irish twins. I don't know why, but this is striking me to the core. Chris was a good kid. Now I know the meaning of the phrase, "you can't go home again." Thank you N.O.T.R. 😞

The Watcher is one of those really interesting things that Tolkien leaves unknown. Ori called it “The Watcher in the Water” in the Book of Mazarbul. It was in the lake due to the damming of the Sirannon River (beneath the Western walls of Moria). Even Gandalf doesn’t know what it is or if there were more of them.

@@NerdoftheRings I've read the books, but it's been a while so I can't quote them word for word, but in the film version, if you pay close attention Aragorn intervenes and stops either Merry or Pippen from throwing rocks into the water, and says to them, "don't disturb the water". I think that Aragorn might have suspected of such a creature and knew something that even Gandalf didn't. Then again, Aragorn did have the gift of foresight or had premonitions, visions of things that can't be seen.

Balin was 7 when Smaug came? I thought they were all at least adults at that time, dwarves have a lifespan of about 240 years, hence why they all remember the day Smaug came 60 years later when The Hobbit takes place.
