making hay for the first cut of the 2021 season with our 1959 Farmall 560, John Deere 1209, New Idea horse-drawn hay rake, and baling it all up with our tired New Holland Super 66 small square baler.
The equipment is old but works well enough minus a few problems that come up.

Love this. My brother and I still do with a 1940s Farmall, 1965 New Holland baler, 1970s haybind and rake. We had a 1920s rake but it is long gone for use.

Old school would be cutting the hay with a sickle bar mower, then crushing it with a crusher. Love the rake…..that is old school😊

I can tell you from experience because we have two 560 tractors and have been farming for 30 years that the end of the shifter is rounded down. Make sure you get the shift rails in line "neutral" and unbolt the shifter and build up the tip and square it up with a grinder. Also when you push in the clutch, if it's going in and out of gear hard pull the TA lever back. This causes the torque amplifier clutches to release and help with shifting. The correct thing to do is eventually adjust the clutch and torque amplifier linkage.

I was going to say the same thing. Any older weld repair shop could fix it by adding on a little metal. They probably could do it in their sleep.

DITTO. Basically same transmission as a Farmall M. The old M's - the Farmall 560's would have this problems once the shifter got alittle worn. It can be welded up by any competent welder.

Horse gear designed to travel at horse speed, less breakage at that speed.. Good to see small scale farming, best of luck.

at least im not the only one using equipment thats about to just stop working any day. i use a new Holland 478 haybine, that thing loves to make noises that i dont think are supposed to be made. i think a 690 john deere hay rake. and a new Holland 268 hayliner small square baler, this past year the twine kept getting hung on the bill hooks i believe they need to be filed down cause i think theres rough edges on them. i love it when people still use old stuff, great video.

I was trying to make some little bales one time and spent 3 days trying to make the baler work and make 3 bales. Day 4 I make about 20 bale.

Your problem is all that new equipment! But my rake is newer than yours. I love yours! Yesterday I finished up 5 tons of grass in 5 hours total time over 28 hours start to finish. 90°F 15% humidity mow without windrowing, dry 24 hours, rake and ready to bail. Using 1941 Farmall H, 1939 JD #5 7' sickle mower, 1973 Farmhand hey rake and 1974 MF #12 baler. But you do have to spend some time servicing and repairing equipment to keep it top running condition. Never drag an implement out of the fence row and start working without service, lube and check out first!

If the knotter is actually tying knots 'part of the time', the first thing I would check on a baler of that age is the knives that cut the twine immediately after the knot is tied. Even a tiny bit of rust will dull those knives over time, and wreak havoc on baling day.

not one piece of new equipment would still b working after that many years. that old horse drawn hay rake still does a good job. a new rake would never last that long. always carry a pitch fork and feed the baler with a fork not ur hands. forks r a lot cheaper than hands.

Pull the torque amplifier back before you shift that thing from one gear to another and it will shift a lot easier

I would make a thicker windrow and after you get baler smoothed out extend the ramp at tail n hook a trailer behind baler make loading easier

My experience with baling is: If you drive too slow and not pushing enough hay into the baler, it will cause loose bales and bales which will fall apart. Watching your video it appeared you were driving too slow and not pushing the hay hard enough into the baler.

Your roller chains are badly kinked. Take them off and soak them in a bucket of used oil until almost time to bale again. Be sure they are flexible at every link when putting them back on. That, and sharpen your twine knives as someone else suggested. That will help your blown bale problem a LOT!!

Good Job, just be careful. Force yourself to think before move. Things can happen so fast. I'm guessing you are just starting out, if you can have someone with you to watch out for you when working on equipment. Don't become a member of the "hung club".

I am far from a safety nazi, but sticking your hand in any moving farm equipment is just dumb... Had a few friends growing up literally ripped apart doing that dumb shit. please use common sense when operating that machinery, especially the older stuff with no shields/guards on a majority of the moving parts.
@tractorboy4148
@tractorboy4148 2 года назад
yes i usually say safety 3rd but when it comes to running equipment its best to shut it down before working on it. i heard many stories of old farmers getting severely injured while working on running equipment. its not worth risking your life for it. it takes a few seconds to shut it down....

And always watch out for the other guy . I lost part two fingers because my brother hit the leaver on a splitter and smashed them off. Lost the 1/2 of my thumb on my other hand on a mower.
