It was a gamble that paid off. The forecast wasn't 100%, but I decided it was as good as I was going to get. Now the hay is ready. Rake it up with the 1550, run a wagon to the field with the 1955 while checking to see if it is dry enough to start, and then it's baling time. I have a customer that wants square bales, so I fill the 2 wagons up with the Super 88 and 720 baler to have enough for her plus a little extra. I have another customer that likes round bales, so the American 80 and Gehl 1475 rolled the rest up. Other than the alfalfa being a little past its prime, I think the hay turned out nice.

That is some sweet equipment. Really like that Oliver 720 baler with the kicker. I remember the White American tractors that was a cool idea that they had.

Our White American 80 has 200 less hours but looks way worse than yours. Ours has seen a lot of hard hours of mowing ditches and corn stalks, running the grain vac, discing, and running a generator. Awesome to see yours in great shape, we still farm with a bunch of Whites but got into Whites from the Minneapolis Moline side. Keep up the great videos!

Chris, the first time I saw the American line was in about 90' a highway mowing contractor in our area bought 80s in every color with canopies. I thought it was the neatest thing because of the history. Why did white kill it? Money? The sale to agco? Hope you see this and can respond.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 года назад
It was after Agco had bought White when they killed the American series. They made them for a short time after the buyout of White, but when they moved tractor production from Coldwater, Ohio to Independence, Missouri, that is when they gave the line the axe. They replaced them with Italian built SAME tractors badged as Whites. More features for less money was the sales pitch. Those tractors did have some nice features, but they didn't have amount of built in weight that the American series did. We had this 80 on the dealership lot, and when Agco sent word they were discontinuing the American series, dad pulled in the barn and we bought for our farm.

Hello how do you call this sort of rake in USA . In France we call it : Sun cause ; the rolls are like a sun ☺I always laugh at bale launcher , imagine someone's passing around when the launch starts ☺ How much days of sun before baling ?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 года назад
We usually call it a wheel rake, or a finger wheel rake.

I like running the round baler with the 1750 not because of the power ,I like having a little more weight! Your right the 80 is a 1655 they didn't change the PTO clutch! Thanks for taking the time to make video Chris they are very interesting!
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 5 лет назад
Thanks. They did update the PTO clutch, it's hydraulically actuated, with a hydraulic brake. It still uses the same PTO shafts as a 1655. I should have shown my external PTO lever I rigged up. It's really handy, especially if I put it on an auger.

How do your round bales do there with rain without a wrap? Seems like much easier on the tractor making round bales.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 года назад
They'll develop a crust that sheds water with a little bit of waste. I typically get mine put in a barn before they get rained on.

You need a 1550 utility to bale with on the 720 baler , 1st threw 4th are a bit slower than a row crop tractor and it makes it great to bale with. Love seeing Oliver equipment being used like you do. Still really like the roto flow design Oliver used in there balers, Very smooth and its an easer flow of hay into the machine to bale. Its a much better idea than an auger by far. Bandit
@ThatOliverGuyChris

I've baled with my 1550 Utility, but it has a governor issue I need to figure out. It was my 1650's problem, and to try to narrow down the problem I swapped the governor assembly between my 1650 and 1550. The issue switched tractors, now the 1550 won't get to full rpm. It does ok baling on flat ground, but the hills pull the rpms down quite a bit.
@banditfarmer1900
@banditfarmer1900 5 лет назад
@@ThatOliverGuyChris Sounds like its time to overhaul the governor or replace it with another one. I want to fix my utility but its going to have to wait for now, No crops in the field means no pay check this fall so its going to have to wait for now, But its day is coming and when I'm done she will look good and run the best when I'm done. I do like my Oliver's ! Bandit

I think most things were made better back then!! Living where I am with our prevailing winds coming off the Atlantic means our equipment is prone to rusting out. Sheet metal on tractors and machinery lasts no more than 25 years. We get over it😄. Then again we can grow grass 12 months of the year

That sounds like our cars here in Michigan. The road salt eats them up, and you don't see many over 25 years old on the roads. Thanks for watching!

Really neat video. That little American is about the most perfect hay tractor there is. That’s neat story about the dealership. I worked for a MF dealer that farmed and it was pretty neat. Wrench all day and farm all night.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 5 лет назад
Sounds familiar, working all the time. It did help with sales when we could show the customers how the equipment performed on our farm. It's like the saying: "Never trust a skinny cook!"
@samtalley791
@samtalley791 5 лет назад
Chris Losey I did a lot of demonstrating for that same reason. When we told you a tractor would do this or that it’s because we had done it. I still help them out whenever possible but no longer a full time employee and the atmosphere is different now that MF is no longer the brand. They started with Oliver’s but wouldn’t sell combines sometime around when the 880 came out so Oliver pulled their dealership and they stuck with MF. 84 years as a dealer and MF pulled it to give it to the local cat dealer that might have 2 Massey’s on the lot at a time.

@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 5 лет назад
Typically I mow, let it set the next day, ted it the 3rd day, rake and bale the 4th. Ive gotten away with a day less here and there. During the drought of 88, we mowed one day and baled the next, but even that was pushing it. A couple bales were not so good on the inside.

I'm over in Wisconsin and I worked for another farmer out of highschool. I enjoyed running his 2-135 4×4 with the Hercules engine and he also had a White American 80 with the Cummins and it had a factory canopy.

It looked like there was a lot of the fine stuff left in the stubble . Also looked like there was a lot of leaf loss , looked like the leaves we're to dry when you bailed it . Iooked like stalks were about all that was left . After it was cured out probably should have bailed it in the evening or morning when it was a little damp.

I don't even live along a main road but I still end up with beer cans and stuff in my pasture. Amazing that people will just throw it out the window - No respect I tell ya... no respect! That 720 makes a really nice bale. You got her tuned in just right. I'm glad you made sure to have enough tractor to pull that rack to the field lol! Bring wrenches so you don't need em!! So... I did not realize the american tractors were open-center. That's actually a little disappointing. What a great collection of equipment! And the peek into the past at the end of your videos is awesome! I really appreciate you taking the time to post these videos! I get to live vicariously through your videos lol!
@ThatOliverGuyChris

The open center on the American series is a lot better than the old 50 series. The remotes don't have any residual pressure at the couplers, and don't feedback into the other remotes. Closed center would be better, because power beyond is a little involved on the American. Still a nice little tractor.
@burningdinosaurs
@burningdinosaurs 5 лет назад
@@ThatOliverGuyChris Verrrry interesting... So did they do away with the safety inter-lock the 00/50 series had? Sounds like it's just regular spool valves then? I just don't really know too much about the americans, I should road trip over and have you learn me up real good on it!
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 5 лет назад
They are a stacked spool valve, very similar to an 1855, but open center. You wouldn't know they were open center, works just as well as my 55 series. @ThatOliverGuyChris

They made them 89 through 92. The first one we had come in was of course green. The truckload had red, yellow and silver ones on it as well. I wish I would have taken a picture, but I thought to myself that there will be other loads in the future, plus my camera was at home.
