Taking the press in ball joint out of an '87 Hardbody lower control arm....because I broke the first one doing it wrong. I'm using these arms and joints in the ball joint mod for the 521.

I really enjoyed your video. ..we live & learn, as long as you learn from your mistakes & don't repeat them that's the way to improve! That is, just how you are, brilliant.

Don't hammer on the ball-joint!! It'll warp the hole!! Get the OTC ball-joint tool set!! If the arm is bent, it'll affect the alignment. Autozone has a tool set also. The ball-joint presses in and out easily with the right tools. If it's a one-time thing only take it to the shop.

You're an absolute champion. I was about to break my LCA in the press just like you did the first time :) I'd been looking at it for ages trying to work out where the snap ring could possibly be, and had it in the press witha few tonnes on it before I figured it couldn't be right. Very clear explaination of how your process to get it sorted, well done.

sir, there is a bit play in my tie rod axle. The axle connecting the inner and outer tie rods is able to make rotation about 1 inch (no noise at this time) or less, but there is no play or movement when the axle is move in and out (it seems normal). Could you kindly clearify about this play whether its going bad or just normal. Thanks.

Without seeing it, there's no way for me to know......even then, I'm not a professional mechanic with tons of experience on different vehicles. You'd be better off taking it to one so they could look at it directly.

It's a 20 ton HF shop press with a 20 ton air-over-hydraulic jack. If you search my vids for "20 ton shop press", you should find a vid showing the relief valve I made. It will give you a good view of the jack. Also search "bjm54" and go to the 3 minute mark for a better view of the press and jack. Thanks!!

Do you have to take the lower control arm off to press the ball joint out or can I use a ball joint removal tool and an air gun to zip it off and on with the arm still attached?
@bluehandsvideo

No need to remove the arm. You should be able to use the removal tool with it still attached. For what I'm doing with the arms......they're already off the vehicle.

Sir, can't we still use the control arm part and change only the bushings, ball joints etc? Any issues of reusing the control arm back???
@bluehandsvideo
@bluehandsvideo 6 лет назад
Yes, you can change out the ball joint and reuse the arm. My interest in the arm was to modify it to use on an old Datsun pickup.
@tnamen1307
@tnamen1307 6 лет назад
But, Hyundai dealer claimed that the arm comes in set. So, it sounds we can not buy either bushings, ball joints, rubber boot etc separately. In short, regardless of other parts good or bad, I have to change the whole control arm!!!! How true is this?
@bluehandsvideo
@bluehandsvideo 6 лет назад
I thought you were asking about these arms. I have no clue about Hyundai arms. You might check rockauto.com and see if the parts are available separately.

Thanks. Been wondering if it was possible to repair/replace these types of ball joints. Why can't all manufacturers just use bolt on ones?!
@bluehandsvideo
@bluehandsvideo 2 года назад
There's pro's and con's to both. I could have gotten these arms with bolt in....just an earlier year of the same vehicle, but the bolt in style take up a lot of room. I did a more recent version of this vid. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jzsak1V_7Ew.html I cut these arms up and modify them to fit on an older Datsun truck. Having the bolt in ball joints would have made it nearly impossible to do. If you're curious, you can search "GB" on this channel or check out my IG under the same name.

Hi everyone, I am trying to remove lower control arm on nissan hardbordy 2001. I have removed everything I am now left with the main bolt holding lower control arm. I tried to hammer it but no luck.Please help.
@bluehandsvideo
@bluehandsvideo 6 лет назад
The rubber in the bushing is probably absorbing most of your impact. You can try a bigger hammer. The bolts are still available new. A bit more drastic option is to cut the bolt. run down between the inside of the arm and the frame on both sides. It will damage the end of the bushing and you'll have to replace it too....which is another royal pain.
@davidchuene607

I still can get that shit out, got a tool to push down at O'Reilly, but the ball joint broke and went through, now I got the ball joint capsel in there, I'm going to have to modify the piece of crap tool now.
@bluehandsvideo
@bluehandsvideo 8 лет назад
The one that looks like a big C clamp? Never used one. Did you see the piece of tube I cut to hold the arm underneath while I pressed it. Something like that might help if you're trying to hammer it out. If it's a stamped sheet metal arm like mine, you might try heating the arm flange up with a propane torch....then cool the ball joint piece down with some air or a can of dust off held upside down. Just be careful. I'm not sure what will happen if that ball joint piece is really hot and you try to instantly cool it. Water might work, but I'm sure the steam could easily burn you.
@JesUs-qn1on
@JesUs-qn1on 8 лет назад
+bluehandsvideo I have a torch at home, but I think the company pressure forged the ball joint, it's not a pressable joint is what I'm thinking so I have to buy the whole arm. I'm going to hammer it out as a last resort.

I looked it up on rockauto.com....great place for reference.....the ball joint is serrated, but it should press out of the arm with that C-clamp like tool. There's a vid or two specific to your joint and arm on YT.....have you seen them? With the removal tool, you should have a larger tube underneath the arm that will just fit over the ball joint. On the top, use the tube that fits on the shoulder of the ball joint, right by the dust boot. Might be easier if you take the dust boot off. Even if you pressed on the shaft and pushed the ball out the bottom, the tubes should still work to get the body of the joint out.

It isn't a ring, it is a circlip. An external circlip. You'll find it much easier to put the thing you are working on in a vice. I know you know that but if you are purporting to write an educational video using the right words and methods is a good idea.
@bluehandsvideo
@bluehandsvideo 3 года назад
Nearly all of my stuff is just simply sharing what I'm doing in the shop and not meant to be for educational purposes. This is more of a "learn from my mistakes" video. lol So, that would be one more mistake. Typically, external circlips are designed to be remove with snap ring pliers. If you look at the :38 second mark, you'll see that is it literally just a wire ring. There are versions of this application that do use true circlips.
@craigfishcake2543
@craigfishcake2543 3 года назад
@@bluehandsvideo I'm not suggesting you are an educator, the whole world can see you aren't that. You've taken the time to film what you do, and someone will copy you. So if you do it correctly, they at least will have a chance to. All youtube videos are educational in that way. What you are doing is good, it could just be better.

Wish we over the other side of the pond had cars and stuff that were built like in the states, instead of all this euro shit, built to last out the warrantee then buy a new one because it's worn out, over here you would prob have to buy a complete new arm instead of just the joint, stupid rip-off Britain ! Soz great video well explained.
@bluehandsvideo
@bluehandsvideo 10 лет назад
I'm not sure we're much better. This vid was done while preparing parts for a ball joint modification on an older truck with kingpins. I bought 10 new arms with ball joints already in them. That was the easiest, cheapest way to get them. lol But, we can but just the joint locally if I wanted to use the old arms. I'm modifying the arm, so I didn't want to go pull used arms from the scrapyard.......lazy!! :) Thanks! I'm glad you liked the vid! :) Mike
