Ya, you're rite. Wonder why this careful way ? I just used lg brass hammer bak when axels we're repacked, rebooted. Then the dawn of replacement happened
@@christophermarshall5765 Had not herd bout snapping axle tip off, but I only Tech'd 45yrs. Never even have it any thot cause they're so tuf. Goes to show the old axcion bout ruining an Anvil probably Tru. Ye ol Brass Hammer always worked.
Takes less than a minute to give it a hit with a dead blow hammer it pops off easily This was a waste of time and it looked like you damaged the bearing race with all that unnecessary pressure. You don’t even need to remove the shaft from the car Next time pull the boot off the cv side only fold it back and hit it! comes off no problem.
Agree with you 100%.i call these guys rookies. I bet anything when ever everything is said and done.that axle would grawl and make noise from the extreme pressure given to that bearing........
@@enriquebauza749 I have to disagree with that, my CV's are doing fine after 80.000 Km of doing delivery's and constantly going to the extreme angles of the steering. And I'm going to agree about the too high pressue as I use the same tool but gently tapping with a light hammer each time I turn my ratchet on it, I don't use near that ammount of force, is only a slight pull.
I will never take my impact guns, air compressor, cordless tools, breaker bars, air conditioning, indoor plumbing and electricity for granted again,...
@@AbbasBinYounas the clip is a simple hardened C clip. It can easily be removed with a pick or screwdriver, after being removed from the vehicle. You can see in this video where they completely destroyed the piece of the axle that holds that clip. The axle is now useless.
@@MegaMarclar thanks a lot... This is somewhere in my country, and here the mechanics believe that replacing CV joints is not a simple task requiring hand tools, but a machinist's job that requires specialized tools... I can almost guarantee you that once they were done with the CV joint, they would've welded the race in place, instead of using the clip. This is a common practice here, they ruin the shaft and then weld both sides of the CV joint in place...
@@AbbasBinYounas Yes it's actually extremely easy to get those out. Just a simple set of pry bars is more than sufficient. It just seems like a total lack of dedication on the so-called mechanic side. That c-clip holds the axle in so if it's not there the axle will actually pop out while you're driving
Man there is only a circling holding it on, that bracket is a waste of time and energy for this task, grab it with your left hand and keep pressure, and give it one good hit with a brass or dead blow hammer., the outside of the spider has a taper that will squeeze the circlip closed, there is no force pulling this apart during operation, in fact that bracket will make things worse..
The pesky retaining clip disappeared as if by magic, and the splines slid off nicely. Now we have a bucket of of worn-out CV joint parts instead of just a worn-out axle shaft. A bent piece of welding rod should make a good replacement clip, and some fresh grease will have that joint working as smooth and quiet as factory reman. Gotta give these guys credit for working in the dirt with sticks and stones. I make most of my own special tooling too...
This is the wrong tool. They're basically removing it by putting stress in the bearing surfaces - similar to removing a bearing on a shaft by pulling from the outer race.
He made a right carry on out a simple job, for a start a pair of snips to get the band off. We change outer CV on car with a puller tool similar to the one in the video and a cordless impact wrench in about 1/4. of the time
I have personal experience like this too. My civic outer cv joint will not come off with a dead blow hammer, I have to order online to get that special tool. With that tool it is still not easy, it was hard. I still have to use an impact wrench. After it came off, I inspect the c clip turn out it was a round c clip different front the c clip on the inner cv joint. I don't know why it was so difficult. My inner had a little play but the outer was solid, so I replaced the inner. After cleaning the old grease and replacing with new grease, I reuse it. Feel good no vibration during acceleration and no sound when turning. That tool only cost me a round 20 USD+25 USD for inner cv joint , a new CV joint is 300 USD.
You haven't worked on one that the hammer is useless an only damages the houses, for the this tool is a hit and miss, some axles don't have a big enough grove for the tool to grip on
I once dismantled such a joint. By bending the joint fully, I could pick out first one steel ball and then the rest and now the joint was in two parts. Believe I could then remove the spring lock ring ... and so on ...
You are correct. Most comments are from persons who do not understand why the shaft gets damaged. Using a heavy hammer fails. As demonstrated by this video, the shaft gets damaged by the use of the puller. Destroy the old joint, taking care not to damage the shaft. Repair the flare on the circlip groove before fitting a replacement clip. Fit a new CV joint.
Hmmm nice tool. I've always used a hammer..out within 5 seconds... But I hear some cv's are stubborn..good vid though. I hope your tool is not patented coz I might just "own" it..
You don’t need a puller for this. Dead blow hammer and a couple hits and it’s off. I actually can do it without a hammer by rotating it and popping each ball bearing out and then assemble by popping them in one at a time
I’ve done it over 100 times and never had a problem. I’ve done it to shafts that are broke where you can even use a vise and had it done in no time. There is a saying out there “You gotta be smarter than what your working with” and this video is not the case!!
I just went back and watched that part in the beginning at around 1:30. I saw the large mark on the outer bell area. So yeah, not a good video if you want to show anyone the "correct way" to remove a cv joint. Good eye brother!
I read if boots broken for a while dirt, grit and gookies ruined joint.. Just buy a new clean one they are cheap insurance..Its really dusty there.. wounder how long it lasts?

Way longer process removing the joint lol.....Is only a snap ring retainer, ya remove boot out of the way.....1 good whack with a hammer BOOM it's off the shaft ( both joints same way ) lost count of how many CV joints I have repaired over the last 30 years lol have a big 3 lb brass hammer just for this....Not anymore I'm retired lol
