I'm only a few minutes into your video, but wanted to stop and say thanks for opening up about and talking about what spinning orbs means to you. After stepping away from learning photography for many years, I've come full circle and now I'm learning everything I can. My focus is travel and landscape -for similar reasons in that it's meditative- also astrophotography and now that I've discovered light painting I'm completely in awe. I look forward to learning everything I can. Thank you for creating your videos.

Such a great tutorial! I had a go and made some nice glowing balls of string lol but I'm slowly getting them detangled... the main problem I had was because I was doing it alone, I used an intervalometer so I could take longer than 30 second exposures but I had trouble knowing when the shutter was open or not... next time I'll just set a 10 second delay and run back and forth to the camera!
@SCHOOLOFLIGHT
@SCHOOLOFLIGHT 3 месяца назад
That sounds like……fun. I would highly recommend investing in a remote. They are super affordable now. Most of them have a beeper that tells you when the exposure is finished. Really handy. I’m glad you found the tutorial handy.

Gyroscopic effect doesn’t want to allow the spinning circle to turn. The requirement of forcing it to turn influences your spinning technique to keep the circle vertical. A rigid vertical gyro, when forced out of it’s running axis, will climb right out of vertical. That might be why you can’t walk forward without changing other bits of technique.

Just a thought from someone who isn't a photographer but who watched the video for the effect shown in the thumbnail. I'm sure over the years you may already have thought of this and dismissed it but in your search for creating a constant circle to eliminate "loose strands" in the finished effect, is it not possible to adapt a mechanical device (such as a drill) which would turn in an almost perfect radius everytime, then you'd just need to work out how to rotate the drill to give the full orb effect? Just a thought, please forgive me if I'm missing something basic. Enjoyed the video though.
@SCHOOLOFLIGHT
@SCHOOLOFLIGHT 3 года назад
Hi Gary, for sure there are many ways to create these mechanically. For me the simplicity of a hand spun orb is the thing i love, like a fingerprint, every one is unique. Thanks fr touching base.
@eyewaves...
@eyewaves... 4 года назад
The ambient light on the sensor got to be proportional to the area of the lens opening and shutter speed (i.e. proportional to shutter speed * (pi /4) * aperture**2) which includes your artificial light. In your case that includes the bulb light. The aperture (i.e. the lens opening) controls the depth of field wrt the point in focus. Hence, a smaller opening (e.g. f8) with 60s timing should get you a better looking ball than a wider opening lens (e.g. f1.8). Perhaps your way of thinking give you a better grip on doing these kind of shots...

Excellent presentation, thank you for sharing your knowledge. ..... When you said you sometimes have an exposure of up to three or four minutes to capture the ambient light, are you spinning the ball of light for all of that time? Or switching the light off and moving out of shot after, say, 2 minutes?

I've tried a few before watching this video. Thanks for the tips! One thing you didn't mention, and maybe it isn't a problem if you do it right, is because of gyroscope p recession (I think) my nodes, top and bottom, are not exactly above each other, but the top node is off to one side. "Just leaving the natural momentum of the head work it's good. Obviously if you slow down too much the head's gonna go sloppy, it's gonna go drop around and it's not gonna work. It's in the balance. Leave the momentum of the head to keep it upright." Sounds like a blue pill might be a solution if one can't keep up with the momentum. Oh right, we're supposed to be serious... sorry.
