Ball Python Enclosure Build - DIY - 6 foot and bioactive

6x4x2 that I built out of white pvc. background was DIY along with the ledges and basking platform. in all she has 8 actual “hides” with plenty more buried and natural hiding spots due to the plants and decor etc.
mostly live planted with some fake ones in spots that i don’t think could support real ones, that provide some more cover for her. plants i used: fiddle leaf fig tree, schefflera tree, monk orchid, zz plants, fittonia, selaginella, trandescantia, arrowhead, blue star fern and a couple types of snake plantt along with real and fake moss.
substrate is: top soil, play sand, orchid bark, tree fern, horticultural charcoal mixed with her live substrate that’s been up for over a year now (forrest floor and reptisoil). tons of life in the substrate, i think there’s 5-6 species of isopod, a giant dubia, a couple earthworms and morio beetles.
lighting: two halogens, a lower wattage lit to almost full capacity for basking and a higher wattage that i’ve got controlled down for daytime ambient. a jungle dawn on one side and an led shop light on the other for plants.
shadedweller uvb and a deep heat projector under the platform on the warm side for night temps. also using some computer fans that run 5 times a day for 5 minutes just to keep some circulation.

This looks amazing! This is the kind of standard ball python keepers should aspire to, instead of the awful trend of hoarding as many snakes as they can in some dingy rack system. I was considering adding live plants to my ball python's terrarium but I'm afraid she would crush them so for now I am sticking to fake ones... but this video has definitively given me a lot of inspiration.
@lashvivs

thank you! give the plants a couple of months to establish before adding the snake is my best advice. some will still die, but they are much more resilient once rooted.

You try breeding snakes like this… It would be nearly impossible and prices would be extra ridiculous.
@rhys2570
@rhys2570 Год назад
@@moderndaypirate8931 if one isn't mass breeding, it wouldn't be too expensive to provide bare minimum care above rack systems. Ofc huge bioactive enclosures isn't an option for breeders but there needs to be an in-between that becomes standard instead of black and white one or the other
@TheCharleseye
@TheCharleseye Год назад
If this was what breeders aspired to, you wouldn't own a ball python right now. Normals would cost $1000 each. The funny thing is, you're not even willing to "waste" $50 going through different live plants to see which ones work for your one snake but you expect people with dozens and even hundreds of snakes to spend tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars on huge bioactive enclosures. Hypocrisy, thy name is Cathy.

What’s the humidity level in the enclosure? With all the plants and the moss you need to be careful that it’s not too humid because otherwise your snake will develop scale rot. You need to watch out for that. Also, I wouldn’t keep the hygrometer permanently in the enclosure because over time humidity will accumulate inside it and give you false readings. It’s best to place it in there to get a reading and then take it out until the next reading, so it can dry out in between. Love the way the enclosure looks. Well done!

it can be tough to find her in here but she usually pops out when she hears me mulling around. i was concerned about the heat at first as well but haven’t experienced any issues. the relative temp stays in the low 80s and when she wants to raise her body temp she finds the spots to do so.

That s a great setup. I recently heard that they shouldn't be allowed to climb too high since they're clumsy and could fall, which is making me rethink my setup, but I see you have branches extending pretty high up the enclosure. What is the actual risk of a ball falling?
@CatharticOutlet
@CatharticOutlet 2 года назад
I wouldn't worry about your snake not being able to climb. I adopted a very chunky adult ball python and when I started letting her roam around my apartment she was able to scale almost any piece of furniture. They are very muscular and can hang on to things with just the end of their tail if they have to. In the wild they will occasionally hunt in trees. The only time there was a risk of the snake falling and slipping was because she was climbing on something wobbly like a lamp stand or something propped up against the wall. So if your branches are stable & securely attached, height shouldn't be an issue.
@lashvivs
@lashvivs 2 года назад
just make sure they have a safe pathway and they’ll be able to scale just about anything. it’s best practice to make sure your branches are anchored to the ground or the enclosure itself just in case though.
@Bunny-bo2sr
@Bunny-bo2sr 2 года назад
How do you keep the temperature and humidity in it? I plan on giving my snake quite a large enclosure when she outgrows her's and that was a worry of mine (she was born April 1, 2021 and I have her in a 50 gallon since she's around 2ft)
@lashvivs
@lashvivs 2 года назад
the humidity is the toughest part, but the deeper your substrate is, the more humidity you’ll have. so my substrate is 8-12 inches. and there are hides that stay around 100% all the time so she always has access to humid pockets if she needs. heating can be challenging with a viv this tall. i used the platforms as hubs inside the viv. there’s a deep heat projector attached to one and a radiant heat panel attached to the other, both controlled by thermostats. these were definitely the two most challenging parts, but i built this over months and had plenty of time to test it all out before she was introduced.

This looks so good! What is the hight and debth of this enclosure? My girl is in a 4x2x2 right now and I wanted to upgrade her to a 6 soon, but I am still unsure about the hight. My biggest concern is getting a proper ambient temp. How many lamps with how many watts do you use?
@lashvivs
@lashvivs 2 года назад
it’s 4 foot tall. i use two halogen bulbs over the basking zone and a deep heat projector under the platform in the basking zone. also have a low wattage radiant heat panel under the middle platform for ambient ground temps.
@blackhagalaz
