For the fellow humans that are in a hurry = Pros : 1- They're Docile ( calm). 2- A variety of options when buying ( colors & patterns). 3- They are a decent size (males are smaller). 4- They're well established in captivity. 5- They aren't boring. Cons : 1- Baby ones are tense and nervous. 2- Some morphs have health issues. 3- They can be picky eaters. 4- They require large enclosures. (75 gallon at least)

large enclosures? dont they hate large enclosures though? like starve themselves if it isnt small enough..?

(40 gallon tanks for the adults 20 gallon tanks for juveniles/babies) the snakes don't like big enclosures because they can feel more exposed and vulnerable so they tend to go on hunger strikes, hide and become less active

Our snake last meal is almost 3 months ago.. We are moving soon to a new place, so we try to feed her last saturday. No way she eat the rat (we feed live). So next month we try it again. Ball pythons can go up to 12 months without eating. A friend of ours have also snakes so we bring the rats to them haha

I have a normal ball python and I love him so much (not sure on the sex yet so I just assume) I never thought I’d get so into snakes as much as I did but the first time I held him I fell in love and he’s probably my favorite of the reptiles that I currently have he has never struck at me or refused food ( not yet anyway *knock on wood*) but I absolutely love him he’s the best he has a very great and calm personality

Also, to anyone that comes for you because of the enclosure you recommend, having several hides in a large enclosure is ESSENTIAL for their husbandry. Also, the termite mounds in which they are found in the wild can be 6 FEET TALL!!! (I hope no one says anything about this, but some people are ridiculous with their BP husbandry) Love this video and your recommendations, and of course, I love Chaos! ❤️

We just got our very first snake, a orange dream ball python, and I’m in LOVE with him. I wasn’t scared to hold him but not comfortable and thought he would bite me (even though I did research and knew he wouldn’t) but he’s soooo calm, he’s only 6 months and never showed any aggression and has yet to refuse food! His confidence and mine have really grown together and he’s sooo curious!

First of, the hair is awesome! That was my first thought when the video opened. Second, my first snake was my albino ball. I was always scared of snakes growing up but 2 years ago I started learning about them. Learning about them led to respecting them, then I wanted to get brave enough to handle them (at 32). I went in one day and seen this beautiful albino baby, I held him and for the first time my hand didn't shake. I wasn't nervous, and he was so inquisitive! He went home with me later that day, he now gives nose kisses and loves a good under the blanket snuggle time. He's still less than 2 years but has, thankfully, always ate f/t. The only time he's ever gone off feed is when he wants to be bumped up a size. I swear this snake is so smart, he's helped me become a better keeper.

Most of the time royal pythons become picky eaters when their enclosure isnt the right size (stress). Their natural habitat is inside termite nests where they wait for prey to come by (they can sit for half a year without food in that position) and because of that they get stressed when the enclosure has a size that is too high for them. The best size for an adult royal python is approx. (length depending on the snake) 100 x 50 x 30-40 cm, with at least 2 sides closed off sight proof with cork for example if the enclosure is made out of glass. With a low amount of stress they are generally healthy eaters and excellent breeders. Oh and as a side note, termite mounds can be very tall yes BUT the snake lives in the pathways not in the sometimes hollow middle cone. So please dont give well meant but ultimately bad advice for potential owners, because the animal doesnt need what people think it would maybe want, it needs what its natural habitat consists of and that gives it the least amount of stress.

Thank you so much for posting this! I just bought my first snake, being a ball python. I was actually looking for a chinchilla for my girlfriend, but hey a snake's the next closest thing, right? :D Anyways.. My ball python is still pretty small, & I'm not even sure if it's male or female. Although, my only issue I can see so far is humidity. My house is like a crypt when it comes to temp. So I keep him in my computer room where it's warmest.. On his low end it's like 72-78, on the high it's around 86-92. My humidity is only around 28% standing though as of last night to this morning it's sitting there. Throughout the night I tried tossing some water on the glass to help him. I guess today I'm going to try & find a reptile humidifier to keep those levels even. This is certainly a new experience, tiny bit stressful ( having this little guys life in my hands lol ). I love it though, snakes are so dang sweet.

While I love and respect Ball Pythons, I've never had a huge desire to own one. I've always gone for more unique snakes I guess. But they are an incredibly important species for the hobby as they are basically the ambassadors. So many people get into reptiles by first owning a Ball Python (or Bearded Dragon for that matter). And I can really appreciate that.

The only concern with live feeding for me is the snake if it chooses not to eat right away, the mouse/rat could chew at the snake, but as far as it being "inhumane" I think ppl who feel like live feeding is wrong are in the wrong hobby/profession...live feeding is 100% natural && normal, its not sad or cruel, its nature, end of discussion💯💯💯💯

Usually wait for mine to show signs of hunger, if she starts to target me I know it's time. Spinning the rat around in a bag keeps it disorientated and always keep a pen or pencil handy to place in it's mouth or to keep it from clawing your snakes belly. Never leave a live rat in your enclosure if it does not strike it immediately. The worst my girl has done is just kill and leave it, which I think was due to size and intervals between meals. People worried about rats and there well being need to realize snakes are animals to, nature does what it does.

Ball pythons having different personalities is so true. My first ball python was a normal type female rescue (3 years old at the time) and she tamed SO FAST and it looked like she craved attention to be honest. You could literally do anything to her and she wouldn’t bite, his or strike at all. A true angel. However... my rescue spider ball python (4 years old at the time) is the devil in the form of a snake. I’m pretty sure he wants to watch the world burn. I had him for a long time and handle him regularly but he refuses to tame. I walk past his tank and he hisses. I open up the glass he hisses and strikes and DOESN’T LET GO. I pick him up, hold him and he still bites. I’ve bled so much from this guy. So... they are all very different 😅

Mine was getting to the point where she's only eat once a month or so, and was acting strange about food, so it wasn't a normal hunger strike thing. All she wanted was to keep/have the hides and decorations in her cage so she's feel more secure/confident xD She's a great snake. Ever since, she's been the best about eating. And sometimes even striking too early..

Thanks for the info. I suffer from panic attacks, and several people I support with have ball pythons. These folk say that they are calmed by handling their pet snakes. I'm not scared of reptiles, so I'm thinking of getting a ball python. Anything than more meds.

Is there a way to make sure you’re getting a snake that will eat frozen the only way I wouldn’t be able to do it is if it’s live ):

First time I held my ball python it was a hatchling and she crawled up to my face flicking her tongue on it. Scared me cuz the very recent video of her from the breeder she was snappy. She does that a lot and she's not aggressive at all

How would you recommend going about getting rid of your snake? My friend bought a juvenile male python, and I told him those things get pretty big (big enough to him, and he'll need a new tank, which hes not willing to do). I can't care for it myself but I'd like to know the best course of action for when he just cant keep it anymore. He bought it at petsmart. I just want the snake to be ok afterwards 😓
