Yes, first pitch to a hitter might pass on using a challenge, but the possibility of ball three or four, and strike two and three, would be situations where the challenge makes more sense. @bounderby99

The difference is that volleyball and tennis have fewer borderline calls that an ump wouldn’t catch than with balls and strikes. There’s an average of around 300 pitches thrown per game, and there are plenty of borderline calls which, given the opportunity, players would challenge. A pitch like the one in the video is so borderline that I think it’s fair to call it either way, but instead we have to waste time challenging it. And especially if MLB is concerned about pace-of-play and game lengths, challenging balls and strikes is a really bad implementation.

Time from catcher's challenge to confirmation or reversal should be 10 seconds or less. Possibly hand/arm signals from ump signifying a booth replay, then a decision via earpiece directly back to ump so pace of play doesn't slow very much. Once everyone gets used to the system it should flow fairly smoothly. 32 seconds IS an eternity in baseball.

I like it; however, per Lindsay over on the CloseCallSports YT channel, the system can be wrong as well. The strike zone is a cube (not counting the back triangle) not a square. Look up her vid about this subject and learn about all the things that go wrong with this system.

the strike zone is a 3d shaped plate that hovers over the ground the width and depth are static. height of it is the only variable. if the powers at MLB didn’t know this and made ABS based off of crossing the front of the plate, it would be one of the biggest gaffes in history.

there was a fangraphs article kind of on the subject that is interesting. The technology is already working in 3d that you see now. They just show it on the screen with the rectangle and make it look like it’s just using the front of the plate. what is interesting is that the technology isn’t being influenced by the catcher, batter or plate. however with real umpires, balls that do not cross the front but still cross the plate get missed. Technology won’t be fooled by pitches with so much movement where it crosses the front off the plate but still touches the 3d strike zone.

@@visarr i understand, which is why i was clarifying what the OP was talking about. it evaluates the whole plate not just the front. however the graphics that are shown on TV and screens at the field will be in 2d. a little confusing, but the actual technology will be using the 3d space.

I'd prefer the instantly-relayed auto ball or strike call on EVERY pitch. Literally, the system makes a tone or buzz to the plate ump's earpiece, so the only real delay is the ump interpreting it... that would be about 1/2 to 3/4 of a second per pitch. So it would only add approximately 3 minutes to a game, and you get 100% use of the automated system if it's significantly more accurate than a human ump. Also, you don't get the tempo of the game broken up by ball/strike challenges, because they aren't even needed.

The system makes it consistent. It may not be 100% accurate, but it's better than human mistakes that may not be consistent; at least the system can have the same mistake to both teams...as technology improves, the system will improve and we can focus more on the athleticism of the game rather than making excuses that a team got cheated out of a game/playoff/Championship or a player not hitting a stat milestone to earn a bonus

I'd hope it would force umpires to call balls/strikes per the strike zone rule in the book. I have solved this for many years. This is my idea, if anyone wants to steal it and use it or give it the MLB, or if an MLB person ever gets wind of it great! You want to use ABS in game? Stick an earpiece in the umps ear. If the ball passes through the strike zone, they will hear a beep. If only part of the ball hits the strike zone, they will hear a progressively quieter beep. The ump still has the ultimate decision whether to call balls and strikes, but can be held responsible for the number of times they ignore the beep, or call a strike where there is no beep. Done.

@@Timienbased on the way everyone swings you couldn’t use the plate or a zone, as some batters are at the front of the box, some are at the very back, some have their body turned slightly towards first (which looks different if you are a southpaw) So my solution would be to write a rule that is clearly defined. It could be the barrel reaching a parallel line, any rotation or the wrist, the knob of the bat crossing midline of the batter… whatever they want to do. That way it removes subjective from umpires. Baseball has to be the only sport that doesn’t have clear rules, even if some rules in other sports are garbage and have the potential to ruin it. I don't think we need the system 100% of the time, partly for maintaining the legacy of the game, and partly for speed, but I like having access to it so that we can have more proof of how good the good umps are and how bad the bad umps are. The game can go so smoothly when there is a good ump behind the plate, but it can really drag and cause ejections when there is a bad ump.

Yes I like the challenge system, much better than a robo Ump. However, teams only have three challenges and need to learn not to challenge on a not so important pitch. But wait until it is a scoring situation and the call seems blatantly wrong.

One thing I've never understood: the strike zone, as defined in the rules, is a 3d shape. Yet automated systems always only show the front face of that shape. Why? It's possible to have a strike nick a part of the strike zone shape at some other point on the 3d shape. This is easily proven true by watching the overhead camera that points at home plate.
@zogger5281
@zogger5281 3 месяца назад
I think the ball/strike is based just where i crosses the front plane of the plate. This is how it should be called w/o the system.
@DAK4Blizzard
@DAK4Blizzard 3 месяца назад
1. It's easier for the system to track the strike zone without the depth over the plate. 2. It's more fair to the batter, who virtually always makes contact in front of the plate. 3. It's pretty rare for pitches missing the strike zone on the front to enter it within 17" farther back. When it does happen, I defer to my point about the batter.

Pretty sure ESPN uses a 3D graphic when reviewing some close pitches. I assume this is a 3D zone and we simply see a 2D representation, otherwise, like you said, it would not be the rulebook strike zone. Of course, this is MLB we are dealing with, so maybe not.

I would add one additional rule. If either team successfully gets all 3 of their challenges overturned they should get a bonus challenge. If they get their bonus challenge right they get another bonus challenge. This should continue until they get a challenge wrong.
@Rwl751
@Rwl751 3 месяца назад
They keep any single challenge that is overturned. So basically they get 3 incorrect challenges per game.
@tomw485

@@Rwl751 I’m aware. What does that have to do with what I said? I simply said if they use all three of their challenges and they get them all right they deserve another one. It means the ump screwed up 3 times to what would have been their detriment had they not burned a challenge. If an ump screws up repeatedly and they repeatedly correctly challenge it I believe it’s fair they get an additional challenge. And if the ump screws up again and they correctly challenge again I believe they should get another free challenge and so on and so forth. It’s a simple concept that should keep the umps accountable while not allowing teams to abuse the challenge rule.
@Rwl751
@Rwl751 3 месяца назад
@@tomw485 perhaps you struggle with reading comprehension? What you are suggesting is exactly what is already in place. They start with 3 challenges. If they are right on their first challenge, they still have 3 challenges available. If on their next challenge, they are also correct, they still have all 3. If they lose one and are down to 2, but they are correct on a challenge, they would still have 2.

I've found the MLB umpires call anything above the waist a ball and the box is incorrect also. Nowhere in the rule book is it a ball just above the waist.

I'm sure a system like that will lead to much fewer ejections of hitters. Imagine if instead of complaining about the obvious bad calls they could just challenge them and be proven right instead.

I don't like more delays. Always thought a home plate shaped holographic screen would be good. Project it hovering above the plate, customized to each batter's size. When ball passes thru zone, it glows, or beeps. Or both. Good bye angel Hernandez

Maybe one day, balls and strikes will be called electronically, using the rectangle we see on the TV. Then catchers will stop framing every pitch. I just hope I’m alive to see it.

If you can challenge one call then you should be able to challenge every call. Make it fair from the pitch call to the safe/out call to the hit by pitch call.....fair is fair no matter how long it takes. Too many games are determined by human error.
