She’s absolutely peerless. She leads, follows, harmonises, supports and is incomparable. This is priceless. Txs Emmy for the beauty of your music. From Gram to the Boss, M Knopfler and some I have not heard of. 🙏. I hope I discover more of your beautiful music.
I thought I would use your statement to plug a girl whose fame never grew beyond the borders of her country which is Ireland. Her name is Donna Taggart and I will link her most successful song though most songs she sings are great and her covers are usually better than someone else's original. I love Emmy Lou so don't get me wrong on that ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0n67dSG35L4.html
An angel's voice that soothes us. Every time I hear Emmylou (every day) I get more impressed. And I've been following for over 46 years !!! Emmylou, perfect ...
Emmylou Harris and Leonard Cohen...two voices...from the same musical heart...both sang this song with the words so clear...both sang this song from memories so dear...and I'm thanking God for my ears and my beer...resurrecting my own past...old lost thoughts aged in time...far more sincere...
I can't stop crying. My dad was a cowboy too, my grandfather a blacksmith. Some of my dearest memories are just hanging out with my horses. Standing in a cold barn on a rainy day, brushing my horse, sharing deep secrets, feeling a connection that can never be broken. It's the spirit of freedom and love. These things we share with other cowgirls, whether in life, or by proxy. Thank you my sister cowgirl. Your video has touched a secret place in my heart!
This woman, is so irrepressible and irresistible, I can't imagine life without her. Quite the true delight, in every aspect. Emmylou, you are number one, without doubt
@@gracegallegos5307 I met her backstage twice, years apart, but she remembered me the 2nd time. The 2nd time I got to hang out with the Nash Ramblers. The first time I saw her she was performing at a music festival at a ranch in the Malibu Hills. Her band at the time had Ricky Skaggs, Rodney Crowell, and I think Albert Lee. Emmylou was wearing a purple t-shirt and jeans. Instantly became a fan. I found out about the music festival from a radio show Linda Ronstadt did with Bobby Kimmel where she said how great Emmylou was. (I won a Doc Watson album by calling in!) Bought the ticket, drove up the day of the festival, PCH was blocked by a Big Rock falling on the road and blocking traffic. Traffic backed up miles but I finally got my car turned about and took a very long detour to get to the ranch. Hot day, everyone was in a good mood and the music was the best ever. Somewhere i still have pictures. Back then they allowed SLR's into concerts, even with big lenses.
There's not another woman breathing who could sing this song like EmmyLou. Every pulse of each vibrato is from the heart.... such an amazingly beautiful performance of an incredible song.
All little girls love their horses. How epic and how poetic. To have EmilyLou sing a ballad to these little girls and their hopes and the aching of their young hearts does an old man good. Love you, EmilyLou.
What a beautiful song performed by a beautiful lady--a fellow Alabamian. It's not necessary to be able to interpret every single nuance of Leonard Cohen's lyrics in order to be moved by this rendition. It still speaks to the soul. Thank you, EmmyLou, for so many hours of musical pleasure.
Honoring the memory of my father who a day like today, April 10, 2020 twenty six years ago crossed that final door, the one that patiently waits for us all. He never heard this song nor knew Leonard Cohen or Emmy Lou Harris, but he loved horses and endured a few terrible loses. He was generous to a fault and I still miss him. Hearing the pain and yearning of this masterwork I inevitably think of him.
Lovely thoughts. I have lately had the song "Harvest Moon" running through my mind, concurrent with thoughts of Pegi Young, for whom the song was written, and who passed away 4 years ago. Music is like hands held across the gap.
Say a prayer for the cowgirl her horse ran away She'll walk 'til she finds him her darlin' her stray But the river's in flood and the roads are awash And the bridges break up in the panic of loss And there's nothin' to follow nowhere to go He's gone like the summer gone like the snow And the crickets are breaking her heart with their song As the day caves in and the night is all wrong Did she dream it was he who went galloping past And bent down the fern broke open the grass And printed the mud with the well-hammered shoe That she nailed to his speed in the dreams of her youth And although he goes grazin' a minute away She tracks him all night she tracks him all day And she's blind to his presence except to compare Her injury here with his punishment there Then at home on a branch on a high stream A songbird sings out so suddenly And the sun is warm and the soft winds ride On a willow tree by the riverside An the world is sweet and world is wide And he's there where the light and the darkness divide And the steam's comin' off him he's huge and he's shy And he steps on the moon when he paws at the sky And he comes to her hand but he's nor really tame He longs to be lost she longs for the same And he'll bolt and he'll plunge thru the first open pass To roll and to feed in the sweet mountain grass Or he'll make a break for the high plateau Where there's nothing above and noting below It's time for their burden the whip and the spur Will she ride with him or will he ride with her So she binds herself to her galloping steed And he binds himself to the woman in need And there is no space just left and right And there is no time but there is day and night Then she learns on his neck and whispers low Whither thou goest I will go And they turn as one the head for the plain No need for the whip oh no need for the rain Now the clasp of this union who fastens it tight Who snaps it asunder the very next night Some say it's him some say it's her Some say love's like smoke beyond all repair So my darlin' my darlin' just let go by That old silhouette on the great western sky And I'll pick out a tune and they'll move right along And they're gone like smoke and they're gone like this song Say a prayer for the cowgirl
Yes you're quite wright, Leonard words, his vision and Emmylou's voice and expression. Great !! This performance is a jewel in a box, sometimes you open it and let it go...
This song I dedicate to my mom…..a cowgirl from the time she was born. She learned trick riding from the old cowboy movies from the 40’s. She rode her horse to school in San Diego back when it was still country (Mission Valley)
Poignantly beautiful. When life fiercely claws you, a handful of Leonard Cohen’s songs do the illusion of healing. Given what is going on nowadays , January 2020, that’s plenty.
Many years ago I worked a trucker, I arrived one night in a gas station in France, I went into the station and I looked at the CD, I saw one with a lady and a guitar, it was Emmylou, I did not know it but I bought that CD, I have fallen in love with her voice and listening to it with great pleasure, and this song can listen to her for a whole day without getting bored
She is one of the two greatest female singers of my time. We grew up together. With her friend Linda Rondstadt who is the other voice that soothes my old soul. I can't even believe how many songs she has sung with her magical ways and her many duets with other great singers. It doesn't seem like she ever gets old. I've loved her since I first heard her with Gram Parsons. And Linda. You too have the voice of an Angel. My only wish was that you didn't leave country for a few albums because then we could have more songs the way you sing the best. I love you both and you have made my life much more beautiful. Now my son loves you both too and we also love you Emmy with John Prine who is such a talented writer and singer. Peace and love to all.
This absolutely wonderful ballad presentation by EmmyLou and with the visuals so perfectly arranged to merge with her vocals, should be placed in a time capsule to remind us what humanity really is. A work of art!
I somehow never heard this song before and am in a state of complete if not stupified amazement. It's astonishing how much this conveys that has little or nothing to do with horses, while constantly evoking them in such immediate and moving detail. Rarely do song lyrics succeed so well as poetry, and Emmylou's rendition is characteristically sublime.
Who ever wrote it ... Nailed it!.....Gram heard the magic ...I believe the best tribute tune I've heard.....when the goose bumps show up and the water flows I know it's perfect....doesn't get better....drunk or sober!
Most songs that are deep and abiding are meant to be listened to like one would view a great piece of visual art. Art museums are quiet, contemplative spaces where one can view the paintings and sculpture with the concentration needed to appreciate and understand them. This song can only be presented to an audience that hasn't heard it, but will TAKE THE TIME TO SHUT UP AND LISTEN to its simple beauty and deep meaning. Unfortunately, most music venues would not be a good place for this incredible ballad.
Just want to thank everyone for such nice posting on this video. The story of the song always reminded me of my wife and myself and how we relate to one another.
I remember my Mother used to play her songs when she wants to relax...and it's really tug the heart when i hear her beautiful voice..ohh sweet old memories
There is something very sublime about a certain kind of song that has, melody or lyrics or harmony that really does something to the core of yourself. This is one of those songs for me. Just magical
EmmyLou Harris, definitely one of the top female singers of all time, such a sweet voice that is just incredible, beautiful just like this beautiful lady, thank you for this
I've listened to so many of Emmylou Harris's solos, duets and all. This ballad is, for me, the pinnacle. Haunting melody, incredible emotion - utter dedication to her chosen task. - MOON BEAR SPEAKS - Montana/UK
It was early 1970’s at the Harvard Square Theater and the P.A. was not working. Emmylou had the house lights dimmed, she walks to the front of the stage and belted out a full show. Legend. Anyone that was there that night knew one thing for certain, that god must exist. Only god can bless us with angels.
I can't get enough of this beautiful song but the video makes this shockingly beautiful. Great job! I am a devoted Cohen fan and this version is the flesh an the structure he created. a credit to everyone. Thanks for posting. I have the song on CD but don't care to listen to it ravenously without the pictures!
