Emmylou Harris, Tulsa Queen. The Hot Band: Albert Lee, Emory Gordy, John Ware, Glen D Hardin, Rodney Crowell, Hank Devito. From 1977 Old Grey Whistle Test
I went hiking in Topanga Canyon in the early 2000s and walked past an extraordinarily beautiful woman with long grey hair. "Oh, yeah, that has to be Emmy Lou Harris," I thought. And it was.
There’s a spiritual quality to her voice, that’s almost heartbreaking in its beauty and simplicity. Whenever an authentic country musician, like her, is singing about God, or about earthly love, you hear that longing for something higher and deeper. I’ve been a lifelong rock fan, but rock doesn’t give you THAT. Wow.
Emmy Lou Harris and Linda Ronstadt have the two most hauntingly beautiful voices ever. Taylor Swift and Adele can only dream of singing like those two women
The Moody Blues are very spiritual for me. Especially their early stuff when they were young men searching for meaning. Their music kept me alive . I saw Emmy Lou with the hot band. They were fantastic and her voice and beauty made for a wonderful night.
I'm 63 years old, been a musician all my life and well traveled. I really don't think that music can be done much better than this! Absolutely gorgeous! Music and Emmy!
I am a french guy, 63 years old. I discover the music of Emmylou in 1979 ( Evangeline on The Last Waltz). Since this time I listen the music of Emmylou and her fantastic voice. I play the guitare often, Pancho and lefty and others !! Thank you for all Emmylou. It's a real pleasure to listen your voice.
Hey Frenchie I'm a big emmylou fan like you are and just few years older like 15 lol she's a great singer but one thing I'm curious about do you have any beaulieu's and la fontaines and lafriniers left over there or did they All come over here and and become trappers and voyagers and end up being Indians?
@@Jeff-sl8xz Hey Jeff, (American I think). We have new writers, knowed in France and int he country behind. But they aren’t « world knowned » at that time. Do you heard about Jean Paul Sartre or Simone de Beauvoir , or Albert Camus (they are all well knowed) or more recently Annie Arnaud ? About Emmylou… I move to tears when I listen some tracks such as Boulder from Birmingham, or Togherther Again for example.
The only Angelic part missing on Emmylou are the Angels Wings! On the other hand they may be there, just not visible to the naked eye, but there nonetheless‼️🪽🪽❤️🤷🏽♂️
Saw Emmylou at the Grand Ole Opry (the newer one) in the mid eighties...I remember she broke a guitar string on her black Gibson acoustic in the middle of a song...she stopped immediately and had someone bring her a string, and she changed and tuned it right there on stage (no guitar tech) and began the song over again to cheers! Talk about keeping it real.
Albert Lee is so great. Came over with the British Invasion. Went to LA. Then on to Nashville to become an awesome country picker. You couldn't write that.
I like fine the very intervention of the Albert Lee on the album >>just one night with Éric Clapton Cocaïne < in ( Budokan théâtre In Japan ) It's an very strong solo of Albert Lee...(mémorable ))
What must it be like for these musicians decades later-knowing they once made music like this, were widely regarded as one of the best bands around, lived life together on the road and in the studio. All of them must look back and-well, I can’t even imagine what it would feel like to look back on lives of such achievement. True legends all.
" I can’t even imagine what it would feel like to look back on lives of such achievement." So, so, SO very well said, Delia. Couldn't have said or written it better mese'f ...... 😀
You don't think about what you're doing, when you're doing it. I've been playing professionally since I was 15. I played big band music with three Master musicians and I paid attention, learned my theory. As for people we played with, doesn't mean much, you just do what you do. I can't explain it any better than that. I am a hard rock and prog lead guitar player, but she blows me away. And how about Albert Lee on guitar, and DeVito on the steel. That is some greatness, right there. They are really good, as was the whole band. Enjoy your evening. 😎
Yes, all beautiful, out of all of them Karen Carpenter had what I call a bedroom voice. So soothing and sexy ( in a classy way, not dirty) . That steel guitar in this song is sooo good also!@
True that! The only thing I see differently is that rather than "many of today's female singers " can't compare, I don't know of "any of today's female performers that can compare!
You couldn't have said it any better! She bears such a graceful elegance., decency, purity and humble charm that transfers directly to her voice. I didn't even know what she looked like until recently. Shes gorgeous! Yet it's her talented singing that she presents first and foremost!
@@hux2000 In defense of the comment, I think they are simply describing the "look " of many of today's performers. Simply describing the visual style that they choose. Not making any moral judgement. And, honestly I knew exactly what the comment meant. Some of them do portray a satanic presence with the way they present themselves, simply to appeal to a particular group of people. I might go on to say that performers do have to...market themselves to stand out in some way, especially if there is any lack of supreme talent. lol
@@riccardo5281 ... this is basic pop country which is mostly what you hear on country radio. just no one got time to listen to 3 minutes of elevator jam fills anymore so they shorten it down. The best music from her era was Big Band genre. She doesn't come close. And we have better music now. You forgot how to dance so you don't hear it.
@@agnidas5816 sure buddy, sure, better music now a days, comercialism and sex driven music but sure yeah... so profund so cool, some bitches song "shake my ass" or something sure is better than this...
I have visions of someday in the future when Emmylou is up in Heaven teaching the angels how to sing better. This is simply one of the all time great performances available on RU-vid.
l say the same thing about Ludwig v Beethoven. imagine something besting his 9th by magnitudes thundering and sounding in all corners. and Him taking it all in, His followers and believers who answered the call, and Christ standing by the open door waving us to enter.
I can't stop watching this performance. Not only is her singing both angelic and heartbreaking at the same time, but the accompaniment is simply outstanding. The pedal steel and Lee's guitar throughout the song adds such depth to it. Just a perfect performance!
Rick check out her rendition of "Ballad of the absent mare " or a sshe titles it "Ballad of the Runaway Horse". man aint got a soul if this song dont make you love her
To Emmylou and all those who played along side of her over the years , thankyou for making my feet tap and turning a bad day into a good one, Australia..
One of the greatest bands ever put together , pure quality , beautiful musicianship, they all compliment each other ......and Emmylou is just fabulous .
@@rmiller2179 of course there’s no rap. It’s Emmylou Harris. Rap is to some folk what musicians like Emmylou are to us. Hell, if anything complain about that dogshit Nashville keeps putting on the radio while calling it “country” music as opposed to pop music, which it actually is. (Chris Stapleton excluded)
If you think you’ve heard every song Emmylou has ever done or just wanna hear a great one she laid tracks on than check out “Landlocked Blues” by Bright Eyes. She sings on another track or two on that Bright Eyes album but I can’t remember the names off the top of my head.
That's so sweet of you to say Jeff 🤠. Well thanks once again for the love, affection and support you've shown towards my son's career 😉 it really means a lot, I'm so overwhelmed🤠
I think it's wonderful with a beautiful voice. I didn't know, but when I read the reply, I thought it was a singer. I searched, and it was a singer with a wonderful singing voice. Is it already a famous singer? No way? You are not the person you are. I listened to grace barnard, youtube.
Hey Buck; for many years I have told myself I do not like country music, but then, damn it, here I am, adoring First Aid Kit, loving Lera Lynn, and worshipping Emmylou Harris. WTF?
@@johnthorne4093 In the 70s performers like these proved that country doesn't have to sound stupid. There are amazing country songs and albums from that era. Wildfire by Michael Martin Murphy, from about 1975, is a lifelong favorite of mine.
This song should be broadcast before and after (preferably replace) all news programmes. Can you imagine the non-relevance and deflation of the bullshit that's being pumped into our homes, if the real spirit of humanity and it's potential, sandwiched the crap at either end. I often think, what a world of shit we live in due to the non-creative garbage running our lives and institutions, raping, pillaging, and murdering (I bet you know who I'm talking about) for the sake of a few more tons of cash. And then I hear this and the shit seems to disappear. Spread the word. Stop believing the non-creative garbage, whose mission is to pacify, commodify and control each and every one of us through fear and repression. Turn off the news and stop buying newspapers (not you SaharaForce).....you sound like you're on the case. Regards
Ian Davis Yes I'm on the case, thanks Ian! I have no tv and radio and seldom read newspapers and if I do, I have a reason for it, other than the masses. Nevertheless, human creation is superb, I repeat, this lady shows it and is it. Best regards !
Nowadays, especially if you watch those talent shows, a lot of people seem to like those 'singers' who screech at the top of their voice and above their range and what's worse, the so-called professional judges even praise them
The best way, the most respectful way, the american way. She introduces each and every one on stage. I am grateful for the english language, respect is an integral part of it.
honestly willie roll another one mn her vioe parses my hertshes more mericn that your space cadet cowboyness self i plan on goin to every concert withiin my reach take my hole family your tickets should be free
This my friends is exactly the kind of music that should be broadcast across this nation ! It is kind of hard to hate when something this beautiful is being played. Damn near impossible!
Robin Logan I was thinking that very same thing. They were amazing live and that’s rare in any genre. She had one of the best voices in any genre too, and with very little effort. What an amazing lineup.
Well, she had a hot band ... Like she said: I was so happy to be the singer for Albert Lee - more or less so, that's why no quotation marks; it's just loosely quoted.
This lady uses the voice God gave her better than any singer I've ever heard, and she sings with her musicians better than any singer I've ever heard. This is greatness. Today's so-called "country" singers aren't in this woman's class.
@@NiePieerdol Linda was great, that's for sure. She had a better natural voice than Emmylou, however I think Emmylou used the voice she had a bit better and I believe her backup bands were better. They understood that they were there to compliment her, not be the show itself; and she utilized her band to enhance her voice like no other singer I've heard. There is a sweetness to Emmylou's sound that no other country singer I've heard can match. There have been better natural voices, but no one used what she had better than Emmylou.
Just gorgeous, clean, unadulterated, ruined skin. Naturally beautiful and kept it. Smarts and class will always do that. The others get tats and forgotten.
Willie Nelson: There are two kinds of people in this world, those who love Emmylou. And those who have never heard her sing. Live long Emmylou. So so sorry about Gram. ❤😥
There is a certain frequency hidden within her voice that makes my entire body vibrate from the inside out. It has the ability to transport any open receiver to another, far more beautiful, plane of existence. It is purely magical.❤️
Wonderful words. And such an acute observation. There's something peculiar in her voice, a hidden frequency or so. Can't help watching this any time it shows up in suggestions.
Here in Australia we don't get a lot of exposure to country/folk music and I came across Emmylou listening to Mark Kopfler. What an amazing musician. Takes you to another place. Back when music was real.
I' came acroos this OGWT show by accident. I was bored and there was nothing else on the tele. I was captivated. Emmylou and the Hot Band. Very special.
no purple hair or multi tattoos and piercings or nudity, just real talent. How jealous must many of these young singers be that they have to put on a freak show to get any notice because they know they don't have talent like Emmylou.
I have 2 fairly large tattoos, Who taught our next generations how to make them better. Couple more years and songs get better. Zac Brown band are proof of that. Willie's son. Country is the money maker that's why alot of bands are going too jump on the bandwagon😊
Alot of people just don't like country for some kind of "stigma" reasons. I've found that most people really don't have their own taste in music, but follow a crowd - whatever that crowd likes, they "like". Or whatever is currently popular. And when certain music goes "out of style" they no longer listen, as if age and vogue have something to do with the enjoyment of music. They have to move with the times, rather than their own sense of what is good. When I hear comments like "oh that sounds so 'dated' " I know they have no tastes of their own.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3-f9PfLjI3A.html Musicians are angels as they know how to take you from down earth and help you reach the sky. 🌹🌹🌹
I saw her in a nightclub in California in 1975. Unassigned Seating, I got a table Front Row Center and she sang this song, as well as others. I felt I was in the presence of a Goddess lol. Her voice cracked in all the right places, conveying sweet/sad vulnerability. What an excellent artist. I'll never forget that night.
@@relars52 You're a very fortunate man Richard, they weren't able to perform together very long...a tragic story Gram Parsons... haunted ELH to this day. Certainly far longer than his wife at the time. Thanks for sharing your experience. Thanks to every one! We're joined together in a unique and rather beautiful way, all of us who have been graced by this exceptionally beautiful angel of a woman.
I mean this with the utmost respect...I'm over 70, so, please do not take this as a slam when I say, I think you were probably too young to have 'been here for this.' I'm thankful you have finally been enlightened about Emmylou's true talent. Welcome To The Party!!!!
Breathtaking! Her voice is like a hummingbird floating around a feeder: You are hesitant to make a move, or speak a word otherwise it will vanish; it is like vapor appearing before your eyes: once there, all too soon gone. Thank you for posting this gem
Most of your greatest music came out of the seventies and eighties. But alot of it was Dark and Diabolical too. The 60s 70s and 80s was the beginning of the end of the country. It seems impossible that this country it's a little over 200 years old and its about to collapse.
I had the privilege of knowing Emmy Lou in the 70's when she would play regularly in a coffee house in Arlington Virginia. Tremendous talent. Saw her every night for weeks. She greeted me by name. Wonderful person.
