Some of Daniel's stories start out like he's Verbal Kent. "Back when I was working in this bread shop in Ft. Wayne, IN..." "I used to be in this barber shop quartet in Skokie, IL..." "I used to pick coffee in Guatemala..."
Oh no shit. I was actually about to comment something exactly like that. Thinking "Man, this guy's gotten around more than I have... and I've gotten aROUND."
I don't think there is enough appreciation for the art of the big brands on their blends. The master blender for these companies has to pick out the initial mix through nose alone. The only time they are tasting is at the very end of the blending process to finalize the product. To make whiskey on that big of a scale and be that consistent year after year, batch and batch is very impressive.
You know how you guys do a quarterly challenge? Today marks the end of my 365day challenge! I have 3 Irish, 1 Bourbon and 11 Scotch lined up (all regions covered:)! Bring on tomorrow! (Don’t think I’ll get through them all tomorrow but I might try a small dram from each Scottish region!) Cheers!
Compass Box The Double Single - 157€ in Germany - everyday I get a kick and knowledge from watching you both - got my first Glencairn glasses delivered today
Uploaded on my birthday! I "accidentally" bought a 2L of Ballantine's one night, quite a while ago, and tasted it. Initially I didn't like it and left it at the bottom of the shelf. Many months after I purchased it, I started using it in hot toddies, and gradually started to like it neat!
Is anyone keeping a running tally of all the jobs that Daniel has had. I think he's claimed to have been a bartender, a baker or at least in the bread shop, as even a butcher? Has he worked at a Candlestick maker? The count has to at least be in the double digits
@@TheBradWhittington I think it's awesome. Being able to experience all those things is great way of setting your compass for future goals. When you're not exposed to a multitude of things, your compass isn't as calibrated...
It's a bit of a surprize for me that so many people like/accept Ballantine's. I always get a bit of a metallic feel when drinking it, and the alcohol seems too prevalent somehow, and all of my spirit drinking friends have a bad opinion of it also. Mind you, I do like higher proofs just fine, but something in Ballantine's just makes me wanna shiver just thinking of it.
I’d like to know who is the Nickelback of Scotch, (meaning every new whiskey they release tastes just as mediocre as the last one). Please and thank you.
I'd have to consider Bruichladdich the Rush of the Scotch. They're fairly well known, but tend to stay cult status for being unique, experimental, & doing their own thing while never watering themselves down just to make money.
I recently bought a Cutty Sark 18 year old blend from the 90's. I am really curious to how it tastes. But going off you're offhand comment about Cutty Sark it should be good
I recently buy a miniature set of Bowmore 12,15 and 18 to start off my experience in a quite early stage of my whiskyjourney (quite on the end of my study, on a budget) and then I recognize a really wierd thing. It had an complete other Color than the stuff form the bottle. Less coloring. I mean if there is less coloring, how can I trust, that that isn´t a whole different content? And I am aware about light breaking in smaller containers aso. Please make an episode about miniatures and samples.
I knew Daniel had an Indiana connection when I saw the bottle of Liars Bench Rye from Bear Wallow Distillery in the background of the vault. Looked up that video and it was sent by his Ma and aunties... Daniel, are you following Three Rivers Distilling out of Ft. Wayne, or do I need to send you some of their juice? The Hoosier state has so much more going on than just MGP...
Daniel, you have to finish the allegory, if Compass Box is Radiohead, then who is the old and great but taken for granted whisky bottler and what band are they?
I once argued to a woman that Peter Gabriel, after sledgehammer and big time, represented middle of the road mediocrity. She said 'Shock the Monkey' and I had to concede I was wrong. All of which supports your point that Peter Gabriel was great and taken for granted.
Ballentine‘s was my very first whisky I had ever tasted and bought. At first I mixed it with cola, then I drank it neat, eventually I outgrew it and ventured into single malt and bourbon. I still drink blended whisky, like JW or Dewar‘s white label...now Ballentine‘s just smells like rubbing alcohol and cough syrup to me, overly sweet, I wont go anywhere near it lol.
You still drink Dewar's but won't touch Ballentine's? I suggest you go back and do a blind taste test. They both def taste different but I don't get any rubbing alcohol or cough syrup.
Have these two awesome dudes ever done a rum review? There's surprisingly little rum or tequila reviews on youtube. Would love to hear their favorites.
One day Rex is going to turn around and see a giant notice board covered in different memos and what not and realise that Daniel had been making up all these stories about his past like Kevin Spacey in The Usual Suspects.
Oy Daniel, nothing wrong with a good old cigar a day. Life is too short to not enjoy the luxuries of life. As for you Rex, you need more cigars in your life. Start mooching more of them off Daniel.
Single pot still: If it's 30% malted barley, 30% unmalted barley, and (according to wikipedia) up to 5% other (oat, rye, etc), what makes up the other 35% of the mashbill? More malted barley? Also, there should be a Daniel week every month. So I can keep mooching whisk(e)y knowledge without having to attend the academy. Sorry Rex.
Its been what 20 years since this channel started, they are finally doing a budget scotch (thats a reall budget, not budget compared to The M), and they are doing a non-special release of it. Finally. Now do Teacher’s Highland Cream.
