They really need to find the original tape for this and digitize it at max quality. This is a treasure for the ballet world and I've yet to see anyone surpass this performance.
Absolute perfection. One of the great performances of our time. The artistry, the control, the magnetic presence and utter beauty of movement--remarkable. How anyone could find fault with this performance is beyond me.
Yes perfection for me too; the result of outstanding talent, extraordinary physical capacity and speed like very few have plus very hard work and a strong will. She isn't called Mademoiselle Non for nothing.
Guillem wasn't good for EVERY role. "Giselle" was ill-suited to her gifts - I was never a fan of her rhythmic-gymnast-style in a character like Giselle. Her acting was never the best- in "Romeo and Juliet" or the already sappy "Manon", she was never good at dramatic roles - nevertheless, she gave it her all.
Une volonté de fer, une technique parfaite, une grande beauté et une grâce incomparable donnant l'impression que tout est facile, et quelles jambes! Une des plus grandes ballerina de notre siècle. Un véritable délice!
To me the what you call 'folk dancing' and I call 'fierce ethnic pride' is the thing that gives this variation (and indeed most of the ballet) its charm and interest. The claps, and the steps harkening to traditional Hungarian dances, were choreographed for a reason, not to be ignored to make the character more vanilla.
This sublime variation has been a favorite of ballerinas ever since Marius Petipa choreographed it for Pierina Legnani in 1898. Petipa revised some of the pas and variations of Raymonda in 1903 for Olga Preobrajenskaya's debut in the title role (she was the 2nd ballerina to dance Raymonda, and the 1st Russian ballerina to do so!) It was during these rehearsals that nearly all of the ballet was notated, which is now part of Harvard University's Sergeyev Collection. Petipa was most pleased with Preobrajenskaya's performances as Raymonda, writing in his journal that she "...danced extremely well", a compliment he never gave to anyone, even in his private journals!
The talent like this is incomparable. To whom one is going to compare her to? Apparently only to Sylvie Guillem herself, noone else. Period. One can talk ad infinitum about what she has and how she does it. And yet... Nothing explaines this magic she does on stage. She is this magic. So much is conveyed with every move - no need for words. That's an art of a kind being seen very rarely. Her body speaks with unprecedented physical eloquence and the thought behind it is always original and the outcome is always unexpected. Absolute honesty with herself. We are priviledged to be her contemporaries. Forever Guillem!
I wish there were more of her performances on YT. All of the videos are grainy and short. How can we not have more of her ballets? She is to ballet what Michael Jordon is to basketball.
sylvie guillem is a goddess. she is everything that i aspire to be as a dancer. her technique is flawless. but i can only ever wish to advance to a level of such high caliber, because i cannot imagine anyone, let alone myself, ever achieving the same greatness. i can simply watch in awe and that will have to be enough.
Just took my breath away. Everything about this is stunning and more especially the fabulous footwork that speaks absolutely of the Paris Opera training! Thank you so much for sharing!
Gracias. Una joya este video ❤❤❤❤❤😂
and i totally agree with you. her dancing is so calm making the dance look really easy, and her bouree's are so elegant it looks like she's just drifting - soft yet strong and gentle yet so sharp.. sylvie guillem is a truly amazing ballerina.
I agree. The boredom comes from modern-day dancers, especially Russian ones, prefering to dance to some ridiculously slow tempi, which takes all the life out of any actual DANCING.
La gran escuela de la Opera de París pionera qué llégo y se enraizo en todos los paises del mundo lo maxímo Francia soberana absoluta ESENCIA DE LA DANZA CLÁSICA (BALLET)
Guillem owns this variation! I have fallen in love with her again and again and again! I can't find though the name of Glazunov music for this part. Can anyone help me with this? 🙏🏻
she is just amazing in this video. energy like a tiger or a black panther on a hunt, moving graceful like a down feather in a warm summer breeze. but there is also something very lascivious about her. like sex for your eyes :) and nevertheless you still see her intelligence and brightness in her movement. GREAT!
This Raymonda is so different from the one by Irina Kolpakova. This is so sharp and strong while the other is so tender and graceful. How come it is so different? (at first I thought this was not Raymonda at all!?!)
