Our very own Casey Lewis, an athletic trainer and physical therapist assistant at Nashville Sports Medicine, discusses returning to dancing. At our clinic, we treat athletes of all sports, especially dancers. Dance puts a lot of stress on the hip with its strength, stability and flexibility demands. Dancers, especially ballet dancers, spend a lot of time with their hips in external rotation with not only static positions, but as well as dynamic and explosive movements.
This video is intended to give you a brief overview on the five basic positions of ballet as well as some tips to treating these athletes.
In first position, the heels are together, the legs are externally rotated, and the glutes (deep rotators and core are activated.
In second position, the legs are turned out, but the heels are separated.
In third position, the front heel touches the metatarsophalangeal joint of the other foot.
In fourth position, the feet in-line with each other, but there is a space between them. This is similar to a tandem stance but with an external rotation.
In fifth position it is similar to third, but the front foot is crossed a little more with the front heel touching the other great toe.
Core Control:
Along with the lower extremity strength it requires to maintain turnout, it is also important to address core strength. Adequate core control is needed in order to maintain pelvic stability to minimize the functional impingement position many dance activities elicit. Core control becomes more of a challenge with movements such as plie’s or small bends of the knee, and grand plie, which is a deeper bend.
Our staff uses pelvic tilting exercises in varying positions to help train the core with dynamic movements as well as external rotation of the hip. Dance is a very complicated sport to return to so these positions and exercises are just the beginning. As the dancer progresses through the rehabilitation process, it is important they master these components in isolation first prior to returning to more complicated movements.
We will continue to explore a safe progression through a return to dance protocol in upcoming videos. If you have questions regarding your dancer’s progress or any of these exercises, reach out to the Nashville Sports Medicine Physical Therapy Team: nashvillehip.o...
