In this video, Dr. Byrd discusses how orthobiologics represent a powerful group of products that will revolutionize the treatment of some musculoskeletal disorders. He says that while we are scratching the surface on their usefulness, our understanding of their application is incomplete."
The two major roles are to potentiate healing or to modulate the symptoms associated with arthritis. They are mostly used for partial tendon injuries to potentiate the body's healing response or in patients who have arthritis that is beyond the point of benefit from any type of joint preservation strategy. Dr. Byrd may use the orthobiologics to control the symptoms and try to keep them going with their natural joint for a while longer.
Orthobiologics do not have much of a role in the non-surgical management of FAI (also known as femoroacetabular impingement) because FAI is a structural problem. All the injections in the world cannot correct the structural issues taking place with a patient.
Dr. Byrd is always careful with these types of injections to avoid falsely making the hip feel better for a period of time, while the destruction from FAI progesses.

A native Nashvillian, Dr. Byrd is the third generation of physicians in his family to serve this community. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Miami, graduating magna cum laude. He obtained his medical degree from Vanderbilt University and performed his orthopaedic training at the University of Louisville. Dr. Byrd participated in fellowship training programs in two specialty areas of orthopaedics. The first, sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery under Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama, has remained the focus of Dr. Byrd’s career.
