I am soloist with Miami City Ballet a former soloist with the New York City Ballet. When I was a young student, I was always looking for insights into the ballet world and how to improve my dancing as well as beauty and lifestyle tips. Now that I am a professional, it is my turn to share.
On my channel I make ballet, beauty, and lifestyle videos for everyone of all ages. My goal is help dancers improve and achieve their dreams as well as open up the ballet world to non dancers. I have a tip I use, if you don't want to keep having to buy more and more ribbons, use a seam ripper and use ribbons from old shoes that aren't too mangled and dirty, it'll save you money. (Use this for practice, you may want nice new ribbons for performances.)

Lolll you don't Bring deodorant, a cold towel, and a dry towel. But generally, you will sweat. Tights aren't super thick though.

The ribbon trick is great for auditions that are entirely on pointe where no shoe change happens! Your channel makes me miss ballet SO much. I'm in college and I love the art but I lost my passion for dancing 2 years ago. I'm hoping that one day I can find a teacher I love and get back into it.

Whenever I do pointe I notice that my right ankle is considerable weaker than my left, have you got any advice/ tips on fast strengthening exercises for my ankles.

Releves on and off of pointe. Or a theraband around the leg of a couch and flex and pointe your toes.

Zyanna Cox I have the same problem... To get better, I do some relevés on two legs (usually 30) whitout pointe to warm up, 15 or more on one leg without pointe and finally I do the same barre and center exercices as in dance class. You can do that everyday or every other day. During the weekend I like to add somme stretches to improve my arches. After a couple of weeks I noticed a really big improvement !

For having to be pinned/sewn into costumes, my studio started using a tag gun (that shoots the little plastic things that hold on tags) with 1/2 or 1/4 inch tag pieces. It is SO fast, clear, and you just have to cut them off!

I just love these hacks, they're really life savers hahaha More video suggestions Katie, you could do a kind of a part 2 of your pointe shoe tips and tricks and give us tips on what to look at while trying a pointe shoe, some tips that can help you figure out if you need to ask for a smaller size, a bigger box, a different shank etc. and some tips for those like me, that never find a pointe shoe that fits perfectly and need other tips like this one of making it wider, in order to get a better fit, like padding tips etc.

Thank you for these tips!! For the next tips/hack video *wink wink* could you share if you have something that prevents the drawstrings in pointe shoes from coming undone or staying tight enough? I have wide feet but a narrower heel and really have to pull the drawstring as tight as possible to prevent my heel from slipping out. On my last pair of shoes the drawstring came undone some how and because I had cut it, it disappeared into the casing never to be seen again :C So with my current pair I have like, 4-5inches of drawstring just bundled in my shoe (thankfully it doesn't bother me but sometimes a string will pop out and can be seen)

Cool video! I have wide feet and it hurts a lot sometimes! I don't know when's your next Q&A but I have a question. I'm going to participate in a competition and it'll be a first for me in this category, all the variations are of the main characters so they're on another level of difficulty but I'm wondering when you're choosing a variation for a competition, what should be your priority? How well you can do it? How much you like it or how good the music is etc?

I love your channel but you should get a lavalier mic for better sound You can get a wired lav on Amazon for like $20. It will make a huge difference and get rid of the horrible echo.

Quick pointe shoe question: I have very arch-y feet, and sometimes push too far forward over the box of my pointe shoes. I have tried getting a stronger shank, etc, but I am still too far forward. Should I try sewing elastic at the base of my drawstring/at the base of my toes? I have seen people do that but am too scared I'll ruin my shoes if I try.

Thank you for the pointe shoe tip! I recently switched to the Bloch eurostretch and really like how they look on my feet. I have a very wise metatarsal and a narrow heel and even with the 3x width the shoes barely fit width wise. I would be curious to know the details of your special order for these shoes and you get any specific adjustments in box width...perhaps a 4X?

Jet glue is the BEST! The container is perfect for pointe shoes, but if you are really in a pinch and need to glue your shoes but can't wait for shipping, it's the same chemical as regular Krazy Glue.

I hopeyou find a studio soon! I've started ballet when I was 15 and was put into an adult ballet beginners class. So also look out for adult classes, not ony teen!

feistchen I've found some studios which have adult ballet beginners classes, but I think they just do basic ballet moves and not really go in depth. Nowadays if you don't start ballet when you are little it seems like they don't take you seriously. :( I just want to really do ballet, you know? I want to put effort into it and really learn it.

Zephie lovet lots and lots and LOTS of work at home. Mainly ankle exercises.. like relevés. There really is no way to get on pointe "faster" but by doing these things at home and doing lots of ankle strengthening exercises you will improve a lot more and better. All I can say, lots of practice at home!!

Another thing that you can do so that your pointe shoe ribbons don't untie or something is to put a clear band-aid and stick the padded part underneath your ribbons, then wrap the clear part on the outside

Hi Katie! I'm going to be near Mobile in a few weeks and might be able to take one of your open classes, which would be AMAZING! I was just wondering what level is the class? I'm a teenager and trained when I was younger but I only got back into ballet in the last couple of years, so I dance to improve my personal best but am definitely not on a track to becoming a professional. Do you think it would be a good fit for me?

For putting a hole in your pointe shoe, I reccomend a tool called the Crop-a-Dile. Regular or "big bite". They're designed to put holes in all sorts of materials for scrapbooking or sewing so you can insert a grommet. It'll create a neat, small hole exactly where you want it and you get some hole size options too!

If it is not known acetone (aka nail polish remover) will take super glue off! Which I'm just guessing is what jet glue is!!

When you have an open blister, put iodine from the pharmacy in it, and you will never have blisters at this part again... My ballet teacher did this in her first days at ballet academy when her feet were bleeding, and she told us that it was horrible, but she got thick skin and never had problems with bleeding feet again.

A hack I have used is Orajel on a blister or even if the skin around your nail if it is raw. Does not completely numb it but it does take the edge off :)

Hey Kathryn, I am about to start my ballet training as a beginner and I bought the tights and leotard. But the problem is when I’m wearing the tights under the leotard, the seams are showing from aa sides . Is there any possible way to prevent that ?

when our costumes ride up we just use body glue. it works even if you're wearing tights underneath your leotard.

Thaaaank you so much Katie! I think the first hack is perfect for me, because they sent me a pair of pointe shoes that was smaller, and since it was IDENTICAL I had no clue it didn't fit right until I had to put them on (sometimes I want to cry for how small they are). Still, they are not the cheapest, and I had to buy two pairs in a little amount of time, so...I think I'm gonna try out. Previously my teacher said this hack could compromise the efficiency of the shoe, but I trust you (and my pointes are so narrow I DON'T EVEN CARE ANYMORE!) I use super glue/Krazy glue instead of jet glue and it works great for me! I have very sweaty feet when I work for longer than ten minutes! Hope this helps a dancer on a budget!

i did a contemporary solo with my hair down and it was supposed to be in my face!! really neat choreography but tough to turn with long hair everywhere not to mention the stage lights! great hacks i will be using that blister one
