Such a power, elegange and majesty come from this impressive overture. You can imagine Louis XIV and his court passing through Versailles' Palace going to the Royal Theater to watching "Ballet de la Nuit". This piece of music states its origins: French.

Actually the Royal Theater of Versailles didn't exist yet. It was built by Louis XV.

Actually, the OG ballets were performed by the KIng and his courtiers as ritualistic dancing balls: The King and his court _were_ the performers and the performance.

Lully was not the main composer to the ballet de la nuit tho
@lukefowler9740
@lukefowler9740 4 месяца назад
Yeah it's likely that none of the music at all was by Lully. Mazarin commissioned the work from Cambefort who co-opted other eminent composers at the court (principally Boësset and Lambert) to assist due to the scale of the work required. It is likely that Lully was a dancer in the production and that this was the original meeting between the young Louis and Lully. A point of confusion has often been the claim that they met when Louis was 14 and he was 15 at the time of the production. Either way, it's unlikely that an Italian dancer, virtually unknown at the court would have been commissioned by the most established French composers and musicians to write music for such an important royal spectacle.

The entire ballet was 12 hours long and extended from sunset (in real life) to sunrise (in real life). It was so notorious that the queue itself for the tickets were around 12 hours long, and even if one was to have had a ticket, one would still most likely have had to stand during the entire spectacle....

This ballet is from 1653 long before Lullys operamonopoly and has nothing at all to do with Lully what so ever. The composers of this work are: Jean de Cambefort, Antoine Boesset, Louis Constantin, Michel Lambert, Francesco Cavalli and Luigi Rossi who all cooperated to set up this ballet as was usual in those days. And when listening to this: what did Lully really invent?
@DrammapermusicaS
@DrammapermusicaS 8 лет назад
+Anders Bertilsson Philippe Beaussant names Lully as the author of some parts such as Ouverture [which in this recording named Anonymous as well as many other parts]. Since this work is not only 'opera' and Lully was already in Paris in 1653, we cannot exclude his co-authorship. And if data is so much important here, then Antoine Boësset died 6 years before this Ballet was performed, which does not mean he couldn't compose some parts. Jean de Cambefort like all others was co-author on the Ballet de la Nuit and - such a collaboration between composers is not rare in that period. And this information is in all the sources. If it confuses you, I may just delete Lully's name from the title of the video. Yet, he is still one of the most famous co-authors.
@andersbertilsson9516
@andersbertilsson9516 8 лет назад
+Dramma per musica If you only cannot exclude that Lully was co-auther of this work together with so many other composers an attribution of this whole work to Lully can´t be right especially since a lot of it is in an older style like Airs du Cour etc. On grounds like these one can make all sorts of attributions. I am also a happy owner of the cd:s and the judgment of the text auther was not to mention Lully at all among the composers.
@8Vasken
@8Vasken 8 лет назад
+Anders Bertilsson There is likelihood that some songs have been written by Lully (la Cour des Miracles) but certainly not by Cavalli and Rossi. This CD is an hypotetical reconstruction based on works definitely used in this Ballet (Cambefort) and on works used in later drama (the Cavalli's Ercole Amante). However the music is beautiful, high level music!
@andersbertilsson9516
@andersbertilsson9516 8 лет назад
Yes and the problem here is that also the parts composed by Cavalli and Rossi is presented as works of Lully.

Despite the french people knew Lully forever while foreigner since only few years. Lully 's biography is widely a myth but not the truth. I despise the man and the composer. The composer because in fact he was a mediocre composer, good in inventing melodies but rubbish in harmony and counterpoint that's why some of his pupils completed his melodies as it was the use in France in those times (see Lalouette affair) as this Ouverture by Cambefort demonstrates it (in fact composed collectively by Mollier, Verpré, Boësset, Lambert and Cambefort). He wasn't the founder of the french Opera as claim everywhere by the biographs. We know well the real founders were Cambert and Perrin with "Pomone" but Perrin has done a bankrupt by dishonesty and Lully could by this way repurchased the privilege which allowed him to play Operas in french. But he wasn't sure of the success, so he asked the king to extend the privilege at Operas in italian. We can consider his works quite like a forgery. As a man, Lully was a horrible man, despite he was gay, he was treacherous, shifty, ambitious, pervert and was almost an obsequious and servile flatterer who won over the king. By example, he monopolized the theater plays Molière wrote because his music was included in it more he succeed to persuade the king for a banning Molière in using music and musician in his plays. There are more and more conspiracies that Lully constantly has done to eliminate his competitors even those who helped or learnt him ( Lambert, Metru, Roberday, Lalouette, Members of the Italian Opera Society in Paris).

Another example: He ran Pietro Antonio Locatelli out of town simply because he did not like his music; it was not in the Grand style like Lulli's. I also want to comment on "his pupils completed his melodies": He composed the top and bass line of a piece and let his secretaries fill in the rest. This was customary in those days. He also needed secretaries to copy his music when needed. One of them once boosted that he had composed a certain piece and not Lulli: When Lulli heard about it, he was fired. The eminent composer Pascal was one of his secretaries. With all his nastiness, he was an exemplary husband and father. If Louis had any friends at all, it was Lulli! He could do no wrong in the kings eyes.

Renaud Brès or Jeroen Bredewold (one of them I think)

I'm afraid AegonCouperin is mistaken: he quotes two bass singers, the question from Pascal Frissen concerns one of Dejanira's arias and it is sung by Dagmar Saskova

Thanks for the response. I already bought Daucé's marvellous CD and enjoy it every day, allthough I must admit that I find this recording on RU-vid more vivid and ornamental. I wonder whether this recording is also available on CD.

I'm afraid they only issued the studio recording (the one you have) on CD. You can always enjoy the livelier aspect on the RU-vid version (which I suspect is the live version I heard broadcast on France Musique from the Ambronay Festival), and tell yourself that the CD offers (as a compensation) better technical quality!

All we need to do is fix the time travel engine and ship a couple of GAU-8 30mm rotary cannons to the Bastille Royal Guards EXACTLY on 14 Jul. 1789...

Great idea but Lully died died in the reign of king Louis xiv who died WAY before the Bastille happened. Lully died because he stabbed himself while rehearsing a piece for the king.

This is the only part of the ballet that is attributed (but uncertain attribution) to Lully. The rest of the ballet is written by Cambefort, Lambert an Boesset.
